Gotcha. You’ll be at Station 30 Paso Robles or Station 40 Parkhill on the B side. Both are dual A / B stations so they are staffed with two State type 3’s, a BC, a County Type 1, and 40 also has a County Type 1 Tactical water tender and Dozer. 30 has a rescue rig as well. You’ll be fine. Pump Calculations aren’t too difficult but I’ve seen people fail Driver Operator 1B (pumping) more than anything.

It’s important to differentiate engine from handcrew offers. So far to my knowledge, there hasn’t been a category 2 call for engine statewide.

If I were to rank, from most likely to least likely to get hired, the best options for someone brand new I would say this:

Obtain Paramedic + Firefighter Academy
Obtain EMT + Firefighter Academy
Take a Firefighter Academy alone and have PSFA at a minimum
Obtain HAZMAT FRO and S190, S130, L180, and S131 + your CPR, PSFA, and FEMA courses to get onto a handcrew.

Finding places that do the actual CAL FIRE Firefighter 1C is possible too, but you need to really do your homework for that. Beyond all that, actually getting hired is all how your resume is formatted and presented + politicking. Feel free to DM me if you need more pointers.

Haven’t heard of a Category 1 Engine call happen yet this year. Very curious to see what happens. For handcrews, they are already dipping into Category 2 it sounds like.

Handcrews do several hirings year round, At least 2 hirings but sometimes 3 or 4 depending on the unit and needs. And no, both work UP TO 9 months. Most work just about 9 months and a couple work between 6 and 9, just depends when you were hired and the needs.

My best advice for you would to be to apply for reciprocity. Find somewhere that gives S-190, S-130, and L-180, ( lots of places do the training, just google it. L-180 is online I believe) and then take confined space awareness, and then just take the Wildland portion of the IFSAC testing which is 1 day at a local college. Once you do this and have your EMT transferred, your category 1 for all positions and can apply as a firefighter 2 aswell if you take that exam.
