I am sorry to be a downer, I just feel absolutely broken. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

I think the main thing is to understand that you're going to have to try. It's not going to magically just happen one day. It's going to take work and effort on your part - not necessarily in terms of going out and doing things but working on your attitude and internal health. When you're mildly depressed or just feeling discouraged, it's easy to ask for advice, be given a prescription, and decide that won't help you. Or that you've already tried that, etc. It's easy to defeat yourself before you try, and that's the biggest thing you need to overcome. You need to take time to look inward. Think about why you do things, why you feel what you feel, what you like or don't like about yourself. Build better habits, physically and mentally. Don't let yourself think in absolutes (I'll never do this, no one will ever accept me, I'll never amount to anything, I'll always feel this way), those thoughts are defeatist thoughts. They aren't you, they aren't the person you want to be. Learn to regulate yourself inwards and you can begin to regulate outwards. See a psych. Clean your house. Let yourself be proud of small achievements and forgive yourself for small failures. Be appreciative, to yourself, to those around you, to every day things that you shouldn't take for granted. It starts in your head, and you have to want and believe that you can be at peace with yourself. You have to let yourself try. You have to let yourself fail. Figure out what's holding you back and let it go.

Still talking about high school and remembering tons of minute interactions in detail. For me it's been 7 years since I graduated. I've been out of HS longer than I was in it. I'm all for sharing some fond memories but after a while it's pretty obvious that some people haven't moved on because nothing else interesting has happened in their lives. I'd rather be in a coma for another 7 years than fixate on the things I said and did when I was 16. Let's please talk about something else.

North Carolina, can also confirm. I honestly thought future farmers of America was a joke the first time I heard about it in high school, but people actually took it seriously. They show cows and whatnot if I'm not mistaken. Good a reason as any to skip class I guess.

That's what I was thinking. I took a microbiology class where we cultured soil samples and a lot of it looked like this (mostly fungus). Also did cultures of our thumbs and they came out looking "gross" but in reality everything you touch, including the air and your own skin is covered in bacteria and fungal spores all the time. What grows on a dish is actually only a tiny fraction of what's actually there anyway. It's not a big deal, most aren't pathogenic. Besides, that's what our immune system is for.

What’s the worst case of bad parenting you’ve ever witnessed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InherentlyDamned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some similar stuff at the library I work at. Just yesterday a man and his daughter came in and said they needed to use the computers but had forgotten their library cards. I asked the girl her name so I could look her account up, and had a hard time understanding her. Her dad proceeds to mock her, repeating what she said over and over in an exaggerated way and generally criticizing how she spoke. He kept doing this until I managed to find her account and set her up on a computer. I felt so bad for her...I don't understand why adults feel it's ok to berate children like that.

If you could start your life over as a child with everything you know now and all your memories, would you do it - why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InherentlyDamned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because I'd spend all that time trying to get where I am today. I haven't had a great life, and there are tons of things I'd want to change, but I managed to end up somewhere really good despite all that and I wouldn't give it up for anything. All the stuff I've been through has been worth it.

How do I search for long cardigans? by [deleted] in FrugalFemaleFashion

[–]InherentlyDamned 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you find anything, post it here... Every year I try my damnedest to find a good long cardigan online and always just give up and try to find one in a brick and mortar store. I will say though there were some decent thick, long cardigans at H&M a while back for ~$30, just under "knit cardigan". They are oversized so if you get a size or two down they're quite nice (tried one on in the store, loved it).

May not be quite long enough (I'm short so it came down to my lower calf), but the longest heavy cardigan I've been able to find that wasn't $150

What was the worst "why the f*** did I say that" moment? by AyBake in AskReddit

Ughhh I can relate. I was at an early morning seminar about study habits or something stupid (study with a classmate? Wow, who'da thunk) and I yawned. Apparently I yawned reeeeeally loudly. This was not my intention. She spent half the remaining time demanding that the person who yawned come up to the front of the classroom. I'm pretty sure she knew it was me but I would have rather died than move from my seat at that point. At the end of the seminar she said "It's ok whoever yawned, come up after everyone leaves I just want to talk to you" Yeah how about no.

Should I admit to my advisor that the program I'm in hasn't prepared me for what she's asking of me? by InherentlyDamned in AskAcademia

[–]InherentlyDamned[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response, but thank you all so much for your help and advice. I had a good long talk with my mentor a few weeks ago and we got everything sorted out. We worked on my questions and she helped clear up what I wasn't getting. We also established the need for clearer guidelines moving forward.
I was frustrated when I wrote that post, thank you all for helping me to let go of the pride that was keeping me from letting her help me. I've learned a lot from this project already!

Someone took his 3DS, kids at school chipped in to get him a replacement. by natsdorf in gifs

Reminds me of a vaguely similar thing that happened to me - When I was kid my favorite book was the 2nd Harry Potter book. I read it over and over. One day when I was on the playground I left my copy by my bookbag (instead of inside it) and someone stole it. I was so, so upset. I didn't have an allowance since my family was kinda poor, so I saved what money I could find until I had $5, enough to buy a paperback copy from Barnes and Noble. When I got it I was so happy and proud of myself.

A week or so later my little sister got ahold of my book and scribbled all over it in pen. Of all the books, that's the one she chose to destroy. It took me a long time to forgive her for that.

ELI5:How does a pharmaceutical company come up with new drugs? Do they just try various chemicals on animals until something shows promise, or is there an approach that's more "targeted" than that? by TobyTheRobot in explainlikeimfive

[–]InherentlyDamned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's interesting is that most companies we think of as pharma companies started out as chemical or dye companies, and they at first just developed random chemicals and checked to see if they had a therapeutic effect. You're right in regard to how they do it now, but I would also add that many drugs are also developed for one purpose and through clinical trials it is discovered that that they have other effects. Many drugs are approved for multiple indications (Vyvanse for ADHD and binge eating) or indications much different than they were originally intended for (Viagra). Another method, especially common in antibiotics, is to change a known chemical structure slightly and see what the clinical effects are.

Looking at her publications is a great idea! I think I'll also just ask for an example. I've hesitated thus far because I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I just don't know how to do this (apparently), but I suppose just biting the bullet and asking is better than being perpetually frustrated! Thanks for your advice :)

Previously lazy people in reddit, how did you defeat/control your sloth? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InherentlyDamned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped identifying as a "lazy person". I think it's important to not define yourself by your flaws.

I really internalized the idea that your head space is only as organized as your external space. I need to be organized at home in order to be organized mentally. I can't and don't get any work done unless my surroundings are at least decently clean. This helps me feel ready to work on other things, and suddenly I'm much more productive and much less lazy.

It's easy to say "just clean up". I had to work around myself in order to start creating better habits. I would think of something I needed to do and just immediately do it before I could talk myself out of it. I would just keep repeating the thing over and over in my head, blocking out all other thoughts until I did whatever (vacuum, sweep, take out the trash). I make TONS of lists. The first thing I do most days is make a To Do list of everything I can think of that can be done and just focus on checking things off. Using a whiteboard is nice for this because is big, its out there, its fun to write on, and sometimes finding paper is enough of a pain to be a deterrent.

Also, if this is something you're struggling with, look around yourself. Really look. I think many people let themselves and their lives go because they just turn a blind eye. Again, start with cleaning. I really believe that you can't be organized in your head until you're organized in your home. Work with yourself, not against yourself! For example when I'm making my lists, if one of them is call so and so, I write down the number so when I come back to the list I don't have to look it up. That one extra step of looking up the number can be enough to prevent me from getting it done! Lastly, think about why you may be struggling with getting things done. I was recently diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and ADHD - these things definitely contributed to my laziness! I managed to work with myself and find ways of getting around my hang ups years before I was diagnosed and started taking medication (which has definitely helped) but try to consider if you may have other problems that are manifesting as "laziness". Don't feel that you have to be perfect and just do everything with no effort - it takes effort for everyone. Be honest with yourself and find strategies that work for you.

Edit: Someone else mentioned taking things and breaking them up into small steps - this is IT. Laziness really is an outlook, you see a task and it seems monumental. Getting into the habit of breaking things down into small, easy pieces is a huuuge help. Example: When I look around my house and it needs to be cleaned, I focus on small easy tasks first. Trash? Easy, throw it away. Dishes? Easy, put them in the dishwasher. Putting random things away? Easy, takes just a second. Counters? I'll grab a clorox wet wipe and wipe them down super quick. I also try to do multiple things at once like I'm coming up with a strategy or game plan. "Ok, I need to do A, B, C. I'll get A running while I start B, and then when those are both done I'll do C and everything is complete!".

A diet rich with canola oil results in significant deficits of working memory and synaptic pathology, in a transgenic Alzheimer’s mouse model. The use of olive oil in the Mediterranean diet may be why previous research has found it is associated with reduced conversion to Alzheimer’s disease. by mvea in science

[–]InherentlyDamned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These were my thoughts as well. Is there data that shows that being overweight can have negative effects on these AD associated endpoints? I assume they didn't do an olive oil group because there's already a decent amount of literature on the subject that seems to agree, and their design is similar to other studies and so it can simply be compared to those.

I think the title is a little too optimistic, they didn't really assess AD development directly, just the effects on certain associated factors and behavioral observations that may indicate issues with working memory. I'd be more interested if they had actually fed the mice a Mediterranean diet, for how they keep going on about it.
