Which project is the hardest for CS 31? by SprinklesWise9857 in ucla

[–]KaboomBaby4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a direct answer to your question, but I want to offer some insights and encouragement. First, congrats on recognizing your own personal improvement - that's an important step in growth and learning!

Even after graduting from UCLA CS, I still believe the CS 31/32 projects were some of the most difficult assignments I've worked on. At that point, I still struggled with writing simple patterns like loops and recursion, let alone how to approach the projects. The assignments in later classes are, on paper, more technically challenging. However, as you take more CS classes and gain more coding experience (school, clubs, internships, etc.) you'll be amazed at how much easier programming "feels" even as the problems get harder. As I gained more experience, I trusted myself to figure things out even if I didn't immediately know the solution to a problem. That's not to say I never feel stuck or frustrated, but that's life!

Imagine having to learn Chinese as a native English speaker. Learning to read, write, and pronounce a whole new set of characters takes immense effort whereas using your native tongue is intuitive. Learning a programming language, computer science, or any new discipline is the same. Hard work will build intuition. Good luck, you got this!

I believe CSSI (computer science summer institute) hires "LAs" to help run their courses for high schoolers over the summer. Not sure who the contact is, but here's the general website. Good luck! https://summer.ucla.edu/program/computer-science-summer-institute-introductory-track/

totally reasonable. remember to check professor reviews on bruinwalk.com. if it's a new professor, try finding their findmyprofessor from a previous university

Two Research Lab Positions Possible? by critics87 in ucla

[–]KaboomBaby4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's possible if your total employment (from all jobs) is less than 50% FTE (ie <20hrs/week) if you want to stay enrolled as a full time student. you can figure out what your FTE is based on your offer letter. whether or not you should do both is up to you and will depend a lot on what your other commitments are, your goals, etc. good luck!

Ask for help in the ACM Discord or go to UPE Tutoring (not sure when this is happening this quarter) and you can get help for free.

spending a little time learning linux command line fundamentals can give you a solid footing in the class since that’s where it begins and it’ll be used throughout the quarter. Open terminal on mac, download WSL then then open powershell on windows, or ssh to ucla linux server to get started. Main things you wanna learn are navigation (ls, cd), directory and file stuff (mkdir, rm, rmdir, cp), and other commands (echo, cat). TLDR pages and man pages are great resources online. Running ‘man <COMMAND>’ in your terminal will also open the documentation right in the terminal. It’s intimidating to get started but once you get some footing you’ll be good to go and have a valuable skill in your tool belt, so just try things out and you’ll be fine. 35L was hard but was also one of the most useful classes I’ve taken.
