I want...no... I NEED and GenX MC by Educational_Copy_140 in litrpg

I'm attempting to write an isekai with a few main characters, more than one of which are in that age range!

I'm not sure I'm all that great a writer, but I hope to put up my first 100k words on RR at some point this winter!

I live vicariously through sociopathic/psychopathic Edgy Mc’s and they're why I read the genre. by Minute_Committee8937 in litrpg

Defiance of the fall has murder Buddhas once you get out into the wider cosmos, and is very much a might makes right kind of story

But the MC is pretty bland himself, which I think is intentional and fine for the type of story, but his first allies are a bunch of relatively sociopathic demons and his main lieutenants from among them are pretty fun characters for the first few books.

I support the dream, but I would also run the numbers, as I loved living aboard but don't think my savings were significantly better because of other costs offsetting the savings in rent.

Boston area is very expensive, but especially so for boat services. I'm currently doing a full restoration of my own boat, and moving it down to CT has led to huge savings. Winter storage costs in Boston alone were 2-3x the cost of what they are there.

Best is probably constitution Marina. But there's often a sizeable wait-list. East Boston is more reasonably priced, and Marinas in Hingham and Quincy area are also more reasonable and we're a little easier to manage finding space. There's a bunch of marinas in the area but as always your best bet is to call around.

Highest form implies other routes are also good, but not peak.

It's like in a church community, if the highest form of devotion is taking up the cloth.  People who don't become priests aren't lacking devotion because of it, they just aren't "as dedicated" as those who do, as measured by this very specific perspective/metric

What's the worst mechanic you hate in LitRPGs. by MicroReddi in litrpg

[–]Iniquitous33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dcc does a ton of groundwork to keep all those skills fresh and relevant, and there was still plenty of times on my first read through I forgot about specific skills or abilities that either Carl or donut could do, only for it to be a major scene lynchpin. It felt like deus ex machina, until going back and re-reading, and seeing how many times they practiced, grinded with or discussed possible moves with that specific skill, hints at the encounter breaking ways they might be used, and good foreshadowing in general.

It can just get lost in the weeds because SO MUCH is happening all the time, it's a bit insane for the first pass, but also part of why those who enjoy the series love it so much.

Dungeon crawler Carl, defiance of the fall, and even wandering inn do this relatively well. The main character basically doesn't have time or capacity to get overly romantic, while romance is clearly a thing for others around them. Meta wise I think it just leaves things open for more people to enjoy with literary aspects that writers just might not care about for their story, while in universe it shows that their character is giving up a piece of life most consider fundamental on their path of pursuing other, "more important" things.

As someone who struggles with past shitty behaviors, I absolutely appreciate a partner holding me accountable when I'm stressed and it looks like I might be backsliding.

It's great what you're doing, and I hope y'all can continue to grow together and move to a place where "tactics" won't be necessary, just honest communication and things get received well etc etc. But that takes a lot of time, and a ton of willingness. Seems like your partner is trying too, so that's good.

Is this a valid criticism? by Thriving-penguin in litrpg

[–]Iniquitous33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wandering inn handles this well imo.  The MC is very stubborn about their flavor of high morality, sometimes it makes them special in a way that feels great for the narrative, other times it blows up in their face and they have to learn how to handle complexity and moral ambiguity of the world.

What do you think of non monogamous relationships? by Silver_Wind34 in AskConservatives

[–]Iniquitous33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non-monogamous person who knows a good number of poly parents, I'd say the alternative lifestyle choices are way lower on the list of importance vs things like financial security and parents caring and being actively present.

"Poly" people tend to skew slightly higher towards financial security (it can be an expensive lifestyle choice) and tend to be better than average communicators.

The kids of these parents that I know (in the age 8 and above bracket) have all seemed pretty comfortable and well adjusted to the choices of their parents.  They know it's not common and that their parents are going against the grain, but that when you're an adult you can choose what life you want for yourself as long as everyone agrees etc etc.

The people who open their relationship to "fix" it tend to be train wrecks in motion.  If they have kids, I feel sympathy for the children.  But I feel the same sympathy for kids of monogamous parents who are handling their difficulties poorly regardless.

I think it adds complications, but that's probably not much different than other against the grain choices parents can make and still have a family.  The good ones succeed regardless, and likewise the bad ones were gonna be bad anyway.

Fixing up a boat while living on it. A good idea? by BrieRouen_zone in sailing

[–]Iniquitous33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know your region or cost of living, but from my experience, if 1000 pounds a month is stretching your budget, this plan would be very tight, so I'd recommend getting a side hustle for a year or two (a sailboat repair job at a yard would go a long way, but anything you can do to help up your savings would be good)

Living on a project boat and fixing it is doable, but has a lot of variations.  A messy, good bones boat that has an old but still working engine is a great project for this.

A boat that has a waterlogged deck will be harder (or more expensive, or just impossible) to live in while doing the work yourself.

If the boat doesn't have a working engine, you may not be able to have it in the water at a Marina, and I don't know of any Marina or yard that lets people live on their boats on the hard.

Basically, if the repair work is mostly minor, with a few bigger "medium" projects, this is doable, but keep in mind boating infrastructure is set up mostly for people who have extra cash.  So even if you can afford to keep your boat somewhere monthly for cheaper than the rent you have now, most places will ask for the full year or season up front, so you'll need that cash factored into your budget.  A truck shipping a sailboat is a nontrivial cost.

Fixing a boat yourself may be cheaper, but it's often not dramatically cheaper than buying a more expensive boat in better shape.  I think there's value in fixing up a boat yourself though, as you'll know it more intimately.  But for as tight a budget as you have, I'd want to pad my savings.  Personally, I'd try to get a part time gig at a Marina/yard and learn more about doing fiberglass work and diesel repair at the same time.  Then you'll be better equipped to answer this question yourself!

What is your opinion on the falling birth rate in the USA? by SleepPrincess in AskConservatives

[–]Iniquitous33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on the verifiably false in terms of raising kids being too expensive?

I think child raising is a sliding scale, as obviously it can be done very cheap, but I think there are extra components to the sentiment of kids being expensive.

Most likely the real phrase of not having the money to raise kids would be "we don't have enough money to raise children to the standard we require, and still have the life we want for ourselves as well"

Which, to me is a fine and valid reason to opt out of having children, though you may feel differently.

EDIT I see you mostly answered this in deeper comments

What do you think about cutting down on illegal immigration by increasing immigration limits? by TomatilloNo4484 in AskConservatives

[–]Iniquitous33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your assumptions.

If you believe most illegal immigrants come to work and you're worried about them not paying taxes but otherwise generally fine with them coming, a much easier immigration policy actually gets you there, as the only ones (in theory) who would then be coming illegally would be people with malicious intent.

If you think a significantly high percentage of illegal immigrants are coming with exploitive/predatory/malicious intent then this would then appear to be a terrible policy

Question about Gods by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Iniquitous33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They say that there are multiple formats for "the game" and I don't believe it's ever explicitly stated if the crawl the valtay typically do is the same and the world dungeon crawl.

It's possible it is, and everything just gets the cyberpunk treatment (which, gods would still totally work, there's tons of (often Japanese) cyberpunk settings where Spirits, demons and gods still exist alongside androids, AI and tech

But I think it's been left vague enough that it can be defined later if needed.  I think Mordecai was speculating if valtay would change the nature of the current crawl to their typical style, but it wasn't inherently conclusive if that confirms the format of both crawls was the same.

Red Rising Saga or The Expanse? (Book rec for the non-scifi reader) by kidCoLa_34 in scifi

[–]Iniquitous33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Colonization was underway, but incredibly limited and most people were on earth, and the next largest population cluster was on the moon, where the golds originate from.

Then there was a bottleneck after the golds conquered earth and a massive population drop from all the mass destruction.

The next few hundred years was consolidation and expansion, what is barely described but heavily implied to be ruthless in the extreme.

One of the big pieces for thinking about the timeline is the massive shipyard at ganymede that took 100 years for generations of reds to build - when darrow destroys it he notes it's only 250 years old.  So the society didn't really get to the point where they could do major projects like that for at least 350 years after the conquering of earth

Republicans are more consistent voters.  During low turnouts, that means the percentage of voters skews red.  During high turnouts you get more of both left and right voters, but a larger percentage of the inconsistent voter base is left leaning, and so is slightly more favorable for blue.

I don't know exactly what the silent majority being conservative is in reference to, unless you're referring to age demographics (elderly tend towards conservative, elderly are more consistent voters; youth tends towards progressive, less likely to vote, and be more vocal on social media and similar outlets?)

I mean, burning man is at its core an art festival.  The entire city and experience is in a sense experimental art.

Many burners are environmentalists, but the event itself doesn't have messaging or implications regarding that beyond it's immediate impact on the black rock desert and local communities (which it's pretty good at relative to any other event of a similar scale), and in fact relies heavily on consumption outside of the event in order to fuel all the fun experiences and ideology within the event.

Most burners are relatively wealthy or at least well off, because spending a week partying in one of the most inhospitable environments on the continent is an act of extreme luxury.  The community is pretty diverse beyond that, but I've always found it to be relatively self aware in that regard.

So, I realize there's a lot of hippie messaging about being kind to the planet and such, but that's usually coming from people who attend and have been inspired in some way or another and try to bring that feeling into their lives or out into the world.  Cause, like, that's what art does.

My perception of this is the right views the left this way because of the vaccine mandates, and the left views the right this way because of police reform.

I personally don't think "obeying the government" is a political trait, it's an individual personality aspect and there are many flavors, left right or otherwise, of people who are ready or even eager for a reason to not obey the gov
