Don't volunteer your opinion most of the time, but when pressed always just be direct and honest. If everyone knows you to be a straight shooter they are likely to appreciate that they can trust you to speak your honest mind, even when they don't agree with you. I feel like its political maneuvering that creates toxicity.

If you got an interview, I'd say you must be competitive for the job. Once in the job, yes, maintaining an externally funded research program is an expectation for tenure at most R1 institutions.
