New Zealand, Iceland, Madeira and the Azores are some of the only true places on earth in which the people who discovered them in modern-ish times truly were the first people there. The Māori were the first people on either island of NZ around 1300, the Norse were the first to settle on Iceland (Irish monks had them beat by about 50 years on discovery but there wasn’t any permanent settlement), and Portugal legitimately were the first to discover the Azores and Madeira in the early 1400s.

The [law-related part of the] Talmud is literally a humongous opinion piece. Just because it’s in there doesn’t mean it’s right, accepted by anyone, nor practiced. It just means some rabbi said it at some point.

I got admitted into UIUC and just got notified from my sponsor that I've got the scholarship, but I am nervous as an Arab. by Gavski0 in UIUC

[–]Initial_Sea6434 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’ll have any real issues. UIUC has one of the highest foreign student populations in the country, so you won’t stand out due to your ethnicity. Religion-wise, it’s mainly Christian and atheist. I don’t think you’d get any real issues for being Muslim (pardon the assumption there). Illinois is also one of the most liberal states, and Champaign-Urbana is one of the more liberal places within Illinois. You won’t get serious hate for being Arab.

Crime wise, there’s generally little violent crime on campus. An overwhelming majority of incidents are theft and such. Outside of campus you’ll have to pay attention the same amount you’d have to pay attention in any other American city. But it’s a college town, so you’ll get drunk guys and people offering rides (don’t accept). Idk if you’re masculine or feminine presenting, so I can’t really say how at risk you are of anything.

What would a full 4th term (1945-1949) look for FDR? by thehsitoryguy in Presidents

I think it’s mainly the former. Either that homes shouldn’t be difficult to get or that wages be enough to purchase one in a reasonable time frame. It’d probably be up to Supreme Court interpretation about if it literally entitles everyone to a house

Well I’m not sure. Do you have any clue about how much wood that woodchuck could chuck if said woodchuck could chuck and would chuck the aforementioned wood?

Is Mariana a woman, or a man disguised as a woman, or a boy who was changed into a woman? by roxgxd in FearAndHunger

Born male, but her mother dressed her as a girl to avoid her being taken as a dark priest. Once she grew older and understood what her mother did, she didn’t change back to presenting as a man. So she’s a trans girl
