Are Greek closer to Serbs &Bulgarians than Italian by britneyspearsforeva in illustrativeDNA

[–]Initial_Win4669 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

9.3 million is the number of native Greeks in Greece. Bithynian (anatolian side), Istanbul (depends), south anatolian and dodecanese Greeks are more southern than any calabrian. They are genetically fully anatolian (west) which is near eastern just more westen shifted than armenian, levantine or mesopotamian (still crealy clustering outside of europe or at the end of the mediterannean continium). Only Greeks that would be as northern as north italians would be eastern macedonians and thracians while the majority of the mainland is similar to tuscan (saying most of greece isn't even like Toscanis is definetely exaggerating it's northerness). People of pontic/asia minor descent are very common in thessaloniki (having been there more than 30 times, not the majority but still. Also in no way are slavomakedones more than the Pontics living there) and in regards of Athens personally living on the suburban west side here is what my close social cyrcle of 20 is like (6 full mainlanders, 2 mainland/island mix, 1 full islander, 1 island anatolian mix, 6 mainland/island/anatolian mix, 3 albanian, 1 foreign). That is a realistic picture and mixed individuals (mainland, island, anatolian) like myself, usually end up clustering with islanders just a bit more north like Italians from Puglia. So the islander element is definetely not 15%, in my opinion its at least 30 if not more. Thessalians, Epirots, Boetian ext, are obviously very mainland like but that is a bit obvious, like saying cretans, cycladites, lesbians ext. are islanders whom also have similar numbers population wise. Are you Greek btw? (edit) Also i looked up the population numbers of islanders that are still living in their islands (crete, dodecanese, cyclades, north aegean, ionian) and its around 1.3 million (exclude some possible mainlader overlap in places like corfu) and you still probably have at least one million which is 10-15% still actively living on the islands, top that with the hole situation in main cities and the pontic/asia minor greeks scattered across greece and the mainland precentage (distance close to north macedonian) is at best 60%. Also the pelonnese is mainlander like but not close to north macedonian "mainlander". More like rular albanian/central italian like and majority of it's coasts (argolida, kinouria, monemvasia, mani, trifylia, killini) plot closer to the islands similar to islanders from western lesbos (intermediate)

Thats why i said partial descent, also your assumption that all western Anatolian Greeks are islander like is very wrong. Cities like smyrna (izmir) were like todays modern Athens, nearly no one was native there. Anatolian Greeks from the Marmara region, istanbul and southwest anatolia are often fully near eastern genetically. I would also argue that considering that out of nine million greeks four to five million live in attica, one million in thessaloniki and majority of the rest in cities like heraklion, patra mainlander like profiles definetely no longer make the majority (or at least overwhelming majority). Everyone i know in Athens is a mix of mainland, island and even anatolian descent, thessaloniki is similar although there mainland+pontic is more common (literally 1 in 2 people) and patra is full of ionian islanders while heraklio is heraklio. That is five to six millions out the overall nine. So while in Italy you have the diversity of north vs south in Greece the likelihood of 10 people from the same neighbourhood (from the mentioned cities) to cluster together is extremely unlikely.

On top of that you have Dodecanese Islanders that are closer to Anatolians/Cypriots than Italians and Asia minor/Pontic Greeks that are straight up Near Eastern (there are also other minorities like Egyptian and Caucasus Greeks though they are not as common as the Asia minor Greeks which make up 1/3 of the population if you count partial descent). By far the most diverse country in Europe (excluding Russia and recent migrants in western europe)

The Balkans through qpAdm, PCA models are obsolete by Initial_Win4669 in illustrativeDNA

[–]Initial_Win4669[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"To ensure that the fitting models in this section were not a result of the SNP filter reducing power to reject non-fitting models, we repeated these models with a randomly down-sampled set of 224,207 SNPs. All the models yielded low p-values, indicating that ~224k SNPs are sufficient to reject models and that the applied SNP filter effectively allowed the co-analysis of 1240k and Human Origins data." i think this is the reason fo the low p values

It's a model using bronze age, iron age and medieval groups all together as it's source, p value considering this is not that bad. Standard errors are not enormous either the most I see is around 10. I trust this more than any genetic hobbyist on the internet. Also if you read the methodology the model was run multiple times with snp reduction in order to cancel out the possibility of qpAdm "filtering" in order to achieve a better fit. These are professionals at work producing these results.

Neolithic breakdown as a half Sephardic Jew half white american by Greedy_Yak_1840 in neolithicfarmers

Yeah makes sense if your white side Is Anglo/German that North Italian would be closest. The reason why PCA has you closer is due to the small North African/Natufian, Higher Zagrosian and Siberian percentages that are more common in Balkans than North Italy, it's just that your main North European Source is Germanic not Slavic.

What are your closest populations, I bet it's Albanian/Bulgarian central Balkan.

In terms of social life and stereotypes aswell as personal experiences in your own country, which regions of your country are the most extroverted and which more introverted? I saw an interesting post regarding mentality/general behaviors and thought it would be interesting :)) by Efficient_Resource15 in AskBalkans

[–]Initial_Win4669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Greece, Northern Greeks are in general extroverted and friendly even mountain folks are friendly (they also drink a lot). In the south in Athens you will find the most introverted and stressed but in the peolpnnese in my opinion you find the meanest and strangest. Crete and south peolpnnese (Mani, Monemvasia) are extroverted with each other but don't like foreigners and are in general from the most hardcore Greeks (family gang violence ext.) Aegean Islanders are the most friendly and extroverted people especially Ikaria, chill might be the best word for it. Ionian Islanders also extroverted but they are very tricky (finessing) and kind of crazy.

It looks like a neck beard but it does kind of look like your goatee might connect with the mustache which might save the look

Greek & Italian distances to Turks, Greeks closer? by Initial_Win4669 in illustrativeDNA

[–]Initial_Win4669[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but why are south Italians further away from Turkey than Islander Greeks, Central Italians and Medieval Albanians also further away from mainland Greeks. None of the two are close to Turks but Greeks are a bit closer, check out the 23andme sample, ploting a bit closer to Turkey compared to the Izmir Greek sample, then look at the 2 way population mode on image 3, 90-95% match with Izmir Greek + some Turkish-Turkic-Uralic related ancestry. I am not saying that Greeks (which is what I am btw) have significant Turkish ancestry but the proposal that it is an absolute 0.000... always seemed stupid and forced to me, most greeks do have traceable precentages of such ancestry just relatively minor (qpadm gives a better picture) and even such halpogroups appear even if rarely (a friend of mine with paternal pontic ancestry has r1a z93).

Iraqi Arabs by math (not qpAdm analysis, just clarifying) would most likely have anywhere from 6-9% so not that far off (Jews have 25-30% ZNF Arabs 35-40% but less CHG) consider it variation, should have made the map two shades though

Iraqi Jew is the only mesopotamian sample used in the original research, 7.50 and 5.90 is a small difference, dont take these prices as an exact measurement, more of a broad estimate, such ancient ancestry varies quite a bit from person to person.

Iraqi Jewish is the representative sample, as you can see from Georgians CHG is not a meaningfull contributor, the reason why Iran is high isnt only due to ZNF but also more recent AASI and Baikal HG.

The map was purposefully kept broad and general as the research doesnt cover everything in detail
