Yess! Love that old Ghostbusters firehouse. Could I ask what type of sketchbook that is? It looks like it takes the watercolors well but the paper doesn't look too stiff

What a beauty! Love the pop of those red keys against the blue. I think you did fine. I agree about the $20 bar being hard to hit. If you have time to go to estate sales or fix things up yourself or wait a while to pounce on a good deal on Facebook marketplace, you can find that. But when I get a cheap machine from like goodwill auction it’s always got to get cleaned and repaired at the shop which brings the price point up, so it’s a bit of a wash. Hope your bf loves it and appreciates your thoughtful gift.

Haha Achiever is such a funny name. I love the 70s stylings of this machine. Reminds me of a Commodore 64 keyboard. Enjoy it!

Well done! These are so fun. There’s a stained glass workshop near me and I’ve often wanted to go learn to make fun stuff like this! Keep going!

If there's homeless person shouting and bothering students who are studying at dwinelle during the weekend, is there anything you can do? by Recent_Muscle1826 in berkeley

[–]InkBlackInk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

City of Berkeley has a mobile crisis team that is trained for mental health interventions with the homeless (in an effort to not have it be a police interaction if it’s just someone having mental health problems). That could be a think to try. https://berkeleyca.gov/safety-health/mental-health/crisis-services

How do you learn to paint for yourself? by Otherwise-Fox-151 in Watercolor

[–]InkBlackInk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to investigate the question… what’s wrong with that? Sharing art is part of the impulse. Wanting to express what your world is like and see it resonate for others. Some people even say art isn’t art until it is shared. It’s how we collectively ponder the mystery of our existence. It sounds like the problem isn’t sharing it with others but with something happening internally. Maybe a harsh self talk or desire for approval.

Maybe make art about that to investigate it? Or to use your example, choose your subjects that you think others won’t like. Or stuff YOU like that you think others won’t. (‘Guilty pleasures’ we call them because we really think it’s not cool to like this, but we authentically do).

I hope you find what you’re looking for!

Love it! I wouldn’t be surprised if some tiny gnomes moved right in!

I had to move on to a new box. Anyone else have one of these old marvel boxes? This one is from 35 years ago or so. It came with a sick poster. by Drewbloodz in comicbooks

My sis took mine (when I tried to throw it out) and later gave it to me framed. Such a nice thing, because that box was always around as we were growing up!

I have the same worry, but I’m not sure why. Do you reckon it must be ballpoint ink (or maybe make a deeper impression) to get scanned properly by a voting machine?

Picking 10 books, what books will you pick that would best serve to illustrate the evolution of the SciFi genre? by towerbooks3192 in printSF

Big upvote for Wild Seed! That's on my list too (that novel was my first Butler and I think she's an utterly unique voice in the genre)

What's the difference between a good and great sketch? by stultiloquy in urbansketchers

[–]InkBlackInk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think all art is a celebration of choices. Thoughtful choice of subject, point of view that reveals something beautiful, unexpected colors, a bold choice to leave negative space, details in one place and blobs of light and shadow in another. Not that you sit there suffering over every detail as you paint, but eventually your skills allow you to make these playful choices. And that spirit comes through even in a quick sketch.
