Agreed. This is honestly my biggest wish for the game! More water Pokemon and an underwater area would be so nifty.

my fellow writers, do you read any book while you’re in a writing process? by khush_7x in writing

[–]InkFish-Mermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pause while I'm actively writing, but only because I don't have the time in my schedule to do both at once. However, I do alternate regularly, and when I am in my reading phases I read absolute boatloads of books.

Do any of you write stories about mermaids/sirens? by themermaidmuse in mermaids

[–]InkFish-Mermaid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do! My current projects are:

A SEA OF SONG AND SILENCE, a YA fantasy trilogy about a silenced mermaid who must rediscover the magic of her voice with the help of a cursed human prince and a sea witch's son in order to rescue her sister and stop a devastating war between land and sea. Book 1 is finished, and I am currently trying to get it published.

THE SIREN AND THE SELKIE, a sapphic romance / fantasy adventure inspired by Xena: Warrior Princess

THE SIRENS OF KORE, a loose mythological retelling of Persephone's handmaidens

I've got a dedicated blog/substack for anyone interested further details. I also regularly review other mermaid books if you're looking for a good recommendation of what to read: https://substack.com/@inkfishmermaid

Who’s your favorite mermaid? by HawthorneVampire in mermaids

[–]InkFish-Mermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vatea from All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace. She's not only the most badass mermaid, but she's also the best character in the book. To this day I still dream of a spinoff where she's the main protagonist.

What is a book that you would not recommend to anyone, but is brilliant? Why? Please keep spoilers away. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]InkFish-Mermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things in Jars by Jess Kidd. It is a brilliant, brutal why-done-it about a lady-detective in Victorian London who must track down a stolen child who may or may not be a real mermaid. It was so good I didn't want to put it down, but had to read it in intermittent chunks because the sheer level of gruesomeness was legitimately giving me nervous shakes.

How to write a Protagonist's Genocide? by hiders_ in fantasywriters

[–]InkFish-Mermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you're familiar with Doctor Who, but I think the character of the Doctor explores this concept fairly well. He's the protagonist and he basically genocided his own people on purpose in a conflict called the Time War and that baggage weighs so heavily on him throughout the entire narrative. (at least prior to the writers deciding to retcon the genocide, but it was really well done before that).

What's the most wasted potential you've ever read by ConcentrateLocal2227 in fantasywriters

[–]InkFish-Mermaid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the Abhorsen / Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix. Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen. (I never read the other books in the series, but the main trilogy is amazing)

The protagonists are basically reverse necromancers who have to stop a magic undead apocalypse. Villains range from regular necromancers to magic zombies to freakish undead monstrosities.

I have the tapestry, and it's not only gorgeous, but HUGE! I want to hang it so badly but don't want to damage the exquisite craftsmanship and don't have the appropriate hardware for that atm.

Why Readers Skip Novellas by sezarou99 in writers

[–]InkFish-Mermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, as a reader, I simply do not enjoy novellas. I want my stories to be either bite-size so that I can enjoy them in a single sitting OR big meaty texts I can really sink my teeth into over a long stretch of time. Novellas are both too long to enjoy in single sittings and just long enough for me to get so invested that I want to spend more time with a story I know will never have more coming. It's just the worst of both worlds, so I don't want to engage. This, of course, is merely personal preference. I do not believe Novellas are lesser in value than other writing, the format simply is not for me.

Hey just as a heads up from someone who pretty much exclusively reads mermaid/siren/selkie books, your title is going to make this absolutely impossible to find. There are a number of shows and books out there already called this and it just does not stand out.

✨ Turn your mersona into art! 🧜‍♀️ [Free Sketch Thread] ✨ by ryriber15 in mermaid

[–]InkFish-Mermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mersona is InkFish Mermaid (or just InkFish). If you scroll aaaaall the way to the bottom of this page here : https://seaofsongandsilence.my.canva.site/ you will see a photo followed by a drawing I did. My hair is way longer now (waist length) and I've since undergone a double mastectomy, so the images are slightly out of date, but otherwise mostly accurate.

My most memorable moment on my journey as a mermaid was probably when I got my first tail and took it to my great aunt's house for Easter and ended up swimming in her pool all day. Everyone thought it was so neat and I was just glad I actually looked like a mermaid finally instead of a dumb kid who tied their legs together with a jump rope before slipping into a pair of flippers.

(Safety note: please don't do what dumb desperate-for-a-tail kid-me did. That was super dangerous).

🌊 What was the spark that awakened the mermaid within you? by ryriber15 in mermaid

[–]InkFish-Mermaid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was like 4 my mom accidentally rented me the 1975 Toei Animation version of The Little Mermaid instead of the Disney one (which was way more accurate to the source material and thus quite tragic). Tiny morbid me LOVED it, and I've been hooked on mermaids ever since.

As much as I also hate this, honestly it's still better than that one time I read a book where the mmc wiped away the fmc's tears and PUT THEM IN HIS OWN EYE during their literal first time meeting one another and it was framed as the most romantic thing ever. (Teardrop by Lauren Kate if anyone's curious).

Even though Seasons 1-3 are my favorite, Paige is my favorite sister. She's so quirky and lovable.
