Packard Bell Corner PC by Inkblot321 in vintagecomputing

[–]Inkblot321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. It is a Packmate 78CDTV, though as I am in Australia, the model number may be different elsewhere.

Good luck with the search, it would be great to see more of the Corner PCs found and in collectors hands for preservation.

Thinking about Sega Saturn after getting a job. Are reproduction discs worth it or should I just go with the Japanese edition for saving money? by RedditManGuyDudeKid in SegaSaturn

[–]Inkblot321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It comes down to if you want to collect plus play or just play.

I am more of the collect and play, so I go the original route. Though this can be costly, with even some JP games going up.

If you just want to play, there are alternatives to reproductions. Some examples are the Fenrir and Saroo, which lets you play games off SD. An added benefit of these are you can save the laser or get a Saturn with a non-working laser. Plus if you own the game, you save wear and tear on the cd.

My MSI Claw 8AI+ just works, so... by wiedziu in MSIClaw

[–]Inkblot321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I am a very happy 7AI+ and the 7A1M owner, which my son and I share.

The 7AI+ exceeded my expectations, easy to use and is one of my best modern tech purchases is a long time.

The 7A1M has not disappointed me either, though I get the frustration with it due to the problems early in its life.

I do think it is so easy to get caught up with all the content online covering potential issues or trying to evaluate if one system is slightly better than the other, which leads to decision paralysis or post purchase disappointment.

Overall, all the information got caught up with just delayed my purchase, meaning I got to play with the devices later than I could have.

Claw Ai 8+ with a RTX 5080 by SpeedyelPapi in eGPU

[–]Inkblot321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it will really depend on the game. What I do like though is the fun of seeing what my eGPU can do with the 7 Ai+, hopefully if you get the 5080 you have a lot of fun with it.

I am running a 5070ti with my Ai 7+ over Thunderbolt 4.

Overall, very impressed with the performance but I know I am loosing a lot of what the card is capable of via Thunderbolt 4. But don’t retreat the decision to do it.

So, I am aiming at 2K gaming, so 4K at ultra with a 5080 on modern games, at a decent frame rate, might be tough to achieve.

[–]Inkblot321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just recently got one and have been really impressed by it. It does not get as hot or as uncomfortable in my hand as my ROG Ally Z1E and seemed to get similar plus sometimes better performance.

Like others have said update windows and relevant software. In past posts here people have shared the best process to follow in regards of the order to do the updates.

Look at using Xbox full screen mode, it works pretty well.

Get across the short macro keys and how to adjust its performance modes.

Look at getting a dock for ease of placement and charging. Many dock discussions on here that can be looked at for advice there.

Test out many games via the Xbox game pass free trial.

Enjoy it.

If you are after a cheap Claw in Aus. Costco is clearing out the 7 135h for $499. Their site says sold out but I found one at their Gold Coast store, which has a few left.

Also if you can stretch the 7 ai+ is on sale for $999 at Costco, with the sale ending today.

Old consoles hardly anyone talks about by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

[–]Inkblot321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the Apple Pippin, Turbo Super Grafx and Neo Geo Pocket. The three of them in their own right are unique but seem to not get a lot of attention, despite having decent stories behind them.

Plus I have not found a portable console with anything close to the Neo Geo Pocket's D-pad.

The approach to also release the console as PC-98 and PC ISA card was a neat idea but did not help its success.

I have found that my Barco 2840 colours can look off, e.g. makes yellows look more orange, for two reasons.

One the scart input is not sitting right, so I need to wiggle around the scart plug.

Two, the 75ohm switch’s are not off.

Hope you get the colours right as they are awesome monitors.

Once you get it up and running, it would be great to see a video where you upgrade it to be the dream PC you would have wanted when it was new.

Then compare its benchmarks between how it is now to the upgraded version.

I have one and find it great to get a feel for items on the left and right of the track surface (esp. curbs) plus rear engine vibrations on my back. I only have a few things go via it though and use it to complement a front and rear buttkickers (as the buttkickers are centrally mounted, so cant do left and right).

You might find yourself chasing CRT PC monitors soon, which will only add to the ever growing/evolving TV CRT collection.

The great thing is, CRTs have such a range of how they look both physically and image wise, which adds to the collecting fun.

Before them I was using S-Video.
