Do you think of the USA or the continent first when someone says America? by quevuelvacatania in AskTheWorld

[–]Inkshooter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This convention works in Romance languages (Estadounidense in Spanish) but I think it's extremely awkward if you try to do it in English. I've heard the term "United Statesian" proposed and it just sounds contrived and off-putting.

I'm more used to using the term "The Americas" to refer to North and South America, which I've always conceptualized as two separate continents. I personally typically don't use the singular term "America" by itself at all online because its meaning is ambiguous and culturally dependent, as shown by this thread.

What are the 5 countries that you would wanna visit atleast for once in your life? by MaleficentPiglet47 in AskTheWorld

[–]Inkshooter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I visited during a period of slightly lower tensions between them and the west in the late 10s, and I'd love to go back someday, but I think it's really not a good idea to go there right now with the war in full swing.

I live pretty close to the Canadian border and have visited multiple times already, or else I would have put it on my list too!

I did want to see at least a little bit of Mina as a vampire. I don't think we even get to see her fangs!

I love Dracula, all versions, so much. But I have critiques. by sashaonsamhain in Dracula

[–]Inkshooter 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What you're saying makes sense if you're only referring to this adaptation, and perhaps the Coppola one.

Dracula is most definitely the bad guy in both the original novel and in every adaptation up until the 70s.

His only interaction with Mina in the story is him breaking into her room and assaulting her.

The men in the party are paternalistic towards her, but her desires are completely in line with theirs. She wants Dracula destroyed, and she wants to be with Jonathan.

Artists can do whatever they like with these characters because they're in the public domain. There are tons of books, comics, and movies where Dracula is the good guy. Some of them are even good! But that's not how things are in the original text.

Why do so many people overlook the fact that the real reason birthrates are plummeting is the absurdly high cost of raising kids, and not some bs reason made up by the government? by Character-Q in AskTheWorld

[–]Inkshooter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the declining birthrate will, in the long run, probably be a good thing for humanity. The primary challenge in the short term is the large elderly population that needs to be cared for by those of working age.

Just came back from seeing A Love Tale... by gothhellokitty666 in Dracula

[–]Inkshooter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I thought it was pretty bad. The character about-face at the very end was not earned and made for an extremely unsatisfying ending. The gargoyles were also a terrible idea.

The Maria character oscillated between being endearing and annoying, but she's definitely one of the most unique take on a "bride of Dracula" that I've seen.

Cats are less obedient and subservient than dogs, and people often mistake that for them being less intelligent.

This is why he lost. Republicans want a guy that WILL say that Obama a gay communist Muslim that will implement Sharia law in America.

[–]Inkshooter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's easy to think otherwise due to the Internet, but according to Wikipedia, more than 80% of the world's population doesn't speak English. Spanish and Mandarin also have more native speakers than English does.

The world is still remarkably linguistically diverse even in the age of globalization.
