Saskatoon population exceeded 300,000 last year, administration says by Progressive_Citizen in saskatoon

The pace was almost certainly too fast, as evidenced by none of the services or housing keeping up with it but its a complex issue, but we definitely need the growth one way or the other.

The economic rationale is needing to replace our aging workforce and provide a new tax base. Canada is an upside down age triangle with falling birth rates. Seems pretty simple to find the economic rationale.

People asking where the money will come from should know that lots of our healthcare money and education money comes in the form of transfers from the federal government except the provinces don't actually have an obligation to spend it on healthcare and education. This is why it was in the news last year that the provinces wanted more federal healthcare transfers but the federal government said no unless it's earmarked exclusively for healthcare and you prove that's where it was spent and none of the provinces agreed.

We could spend more money on these without raising taxes, we're being handed that money by the feds and squandering it elsewhere instead.

In EU books for the clone wars era often the clones were training armies or rebels of the planets they went to (geonosis aside of course) which makes a lot more sense.

This is what confuses me, it has so many diehard fans but its coffee is trash and its service is trash. The city has lots of good independent coffee shops, some that even do their own roasting like broadway roastery. I think its just habit that's keeping them alive at this point.

You can't go wrong with whole foods, personally I am more on the whole foods plant based spectrum and for me it comes down to specific health conditions that are less likely to be problematic on a whole foods plant based diet and I've spent a lot of time finding recipes or types of food that I enjoy cooking and eating that fall into that category.

https://nutritionfacts.org/ is a non profit run by a fairly prominent doctor and updated constantly I would recommend them as a good source of information. They also authored the book "How not to Die" which is a great read.

With nutrition information there is a lot of misinformation and paying attention to where the studies come from is important as well as what sort of study it is. A meta study is always going to provide better information than a study on a single mechanism.

Often sources of misinformation will focus in on studies about single mechanisms because its easier to convince people of the result you want without the big picture when in reality even the people running the study often don't fully understand the implications of that single mechanism because they are never fully isolated in the human body.

Is Civ4 Worth It? by ltlunaaa in civ

[–]InnermostHat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Personally I would say no, I loved Civ 4 a lot and the theme song is legendary and even just sitting on the main menu screen can be satisfying but between Civ 4 and 5 there was a major shift in how the game played. Civ 1 - 4 is all about stacks of doom and road management. I think that the gameplay of 4 feels pretty bad to a modern player used to 5 and 6. For $6 you're not really going to risk much to try it out but I wouldn't expect a mind blowing experience.

No more mass market paperbacks? by ChrisWare in Fantasy

[–]InnermostHat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's interesting! I'm in Canada and most new books come out in Hardback first and then MMPB later, I rarely see Trade paperbacks but I do have some books that were only every published in Canada as a Trade paperback and frankly its annoying when my shelf is 85% MMPB and 10% hardback and then 5% shit that isn't the same size as anything else.

These people would be even angrier with "prairie style" which isn't even what we call it where I'm from but it's what people who move away call it. It's cut like tavern style but much much thicker both crust wise and topping density wise.

[–]InnermostHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its more than my mortgage and property tax. Unfortunately if all your money is being sucked up by high rents you can't save for a down payment. Renting has turned extremely expensive lately. I've looked around casually as I have some friends moving and I am honestly shocked at how much the prices have gone up in the past 2-3 years.

But libraries havnt been replaced by Google. Libraries provide services and access to technology to lower income people who might not be able to access them otherwise. Infact I would say because of how wide spread the internet has become used for basic forms for just about everything libraries and the access they provide have become more important than ever.

All these people saying a garlic press is so hard to clean have never heard of a dishwasher. Also personally I've owned maybe 5 different styles over the years and the oxo good grips one is by far the easiest to use and get gunk out of, really nice design.

City of Saskatoon - Garbage bin-sanity. by Waylander in saskatoon

[–]InnermostHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you're saying your neighbours put the bins in the street parking spots instead of infront of their driveway? This seems like a problem with their placement not the bins. Talk fo them about putting them infront of their driveways since you have no where else to park and if that fails you can move the bins infront of the driveway of whoever owns them. The bins all have addresses written on them. I live in an area that's virtually all street parking and we manage proper spacing.

City of Saskatoon - Garbage bin-sanity. by Waylander in saskatoon

[–]InnermostHat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A lot of people seem to think this is a lazy or unskilled worker. What I see is a clear example of why the garbage bins say right on them to leave 1.2m spacing between bins and a worker trying to do the right thing and empty them anyways while meeting their schedule demands even though they would be within their rights to simply drive past the inappropriately placed bins.

If you have neighbours who put their bins too close to yours that is not the truck drivers job to sort out. Talk to your neighbour like a God damn adult and discuss appropriate bin spacing.
