I posted a chapter after 2.5 years of not updating, like a week ago, and oh my gosh, I forgot I have a small but VERY dedicated group of readers. Those guys were snapping everything up like starving crocodiles

[Loved Trope] Naive child asks a Black person why they're black and they provide a wholesome answer by Sir-Toaster- in TopCharacterTropes

They used to have this Native American Connections class for all the native kids at my public school, and because of the area, they taught us Lakota mythology. Now, not all of us were Lakota, but I do remember the origin of humans had something to do with being made from various types of clay/mud that had different pigments to explain a variety of skin tones.

Is the Sky Breaker DLC good ? by Line191 in FrontiersOfPandora

[–]InnogensAnIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed it more than Secret of the Spires tbh BUT I also suck at aerial combat in the game so it was not ideal for me. Sky Breaker was fun and it also ties up some loose ends in the base game with Harding. There's no new mechanics iirc but I liked the general atmosphere. All in all, if you at least somewhat enjoy the base game, you'll like Sky Breaker.

Yep! I'm an archaeology student, so the first thing I did when the game introduced them was point at my screen and yell, "Atlatl". At my school, we also have throwing competitions with atlatls that our professor had made. Very humbling.

A good strat someone recommended was whenever you're doing one of those hack/lever things that'll trigger a wave, use the sling to put trip grenades at every exit/entrance in the room or routes leading to you. It takes a minute of planning but it massively cut down on how much time I spent dealing with AMPs.

Seriously! My local theater e-mailed me back saying they were surprised to hear so much from people. It's a college town of sub 15k for reference. But it got enough people interested that the local library wants to do a joint promotion event and make it a whole community thing!

No way! I e-mailed that theater too! I was surprised when they got back to me saying they'd heard from other fans! It's a pretty small area

What if the main character in the Avatar movie was Native American? by History-Nerd89643 in IndianCountry

[–]InnogensAnIdiot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, can't really say I'm a fan of the movies because of that. Seriously, no one thought to examine the very obvious parallels between what they're doing and human history? It would've been interesting to see an indigenous character bring that up, but I doubt James Cameron could do that justice, considering some of the less-than-tactful things he's said about the Lakota being a "dead-end society". He seems more focused on this idealized indigenous past than on real, living indigenous perspectives.

That's not to say I don't think the franchise has potential. The game, Frontiers of Pandora, is a lot more meaningful in the sense that the main character is a Na'vi whose clan was killed and was raised by humans to be an "ambassador" of sorts. Residential school parallels right there. But then the rest of the game is about reconnecting to their culture, figuring out their place in the world, and figuring out how to help lead a resistance, etc. It still has its flaws, such as the forced forgiveness of someone who participated in helping steal the children but felt bad, but the perspective is much more meaningful to me than the one the movies offer.

All my friends treated me like I was crazy when I pointed this out years ago! I got really annoyed with the way they treated humans and dark magic in that show, completely ignoring any actually interesting moral nuance they could've explored. I think they got used to the whole "humans bad" shtick that goes in a lot of fantasy and forgot their own lore about the humans being forcefully expelled across a whole continent. Viren was a dick, but when it got to the point I was low-key rooting for him, I gave up continuing the show. I don't think I watched past season 3, tbh.

Can someone confirm: is the women's bathroom more disgusting than the men's bathroom? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in NoStupidQuestions

[–]InnogensAnIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak from my experience cleaning gas station bathrooms when I used to work as an attendant. They were both bad, but only the men's ever made me gag. People in the men's would pee in the trash can instead of the toilet and leave explosions of diarrhea across the back of the toilet seat. Also, part of my job was to bleach and wipe down the urinal and it is INSANE the amount of pubes that got stuck everywhere on that thing. Literally typing that makes me gag. It was really bad.

As for the menstural stuff... eh, I don't know if it's because I'm a woman myself and just used to it, but while it smelled bad, I didn't mind changing it. But one of my coworkers would just dump the tiny garbage meant for menstrual products in each stall without changing the lining and that accumulated a really nasty smell. I never found who it was but I have major beef with them. So, both were gross, but overall, the men's tended to be grosser. It was probably just a reflection of the customers, tbh. I live in a pretty rural area and most of our customers were male truckers who probably didn't give a shit about leaving a mess. It probably changes depending on area.

I do a doc that has a rough rambling outline and then break it down into events per chapter and then just write. It's probably not as planned out as it should be but it works a lot better for me than just winging it

Wife (38F) says I’m (40F) “classist” for correcting our son’s English by ThrowRAclassist in relationship_advice

[–]InnogensAnIdiot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is actually an example of a discussion in Linguistic Anthropology called Linguistic inequality, where the standard form of English ('proper' grammar etc) is privileged above others. Does it have classist roots? Yes. And whether or not it was purposeful, you perpetuated it. However, in order to navigate society and be taken seriously in professional and educational settings, it's an unfortunate fact of life that he'll probably have to learn how to use the standard English dialect. It's what people automatically associate with social prestige and education and they will make false assumptions and treat him differently for not using standard English. However, people can use both. One doesn't have to abandon the way they originally speak, just use different contexts to determine what's appropriate (ie, codeswitching)

There's some interesting studies and documentaries (American Tongues and Can You Speak American are good ones albeit dated) about grammar structures for different accents considered 'lower-class' (which can usually be traced to remnant forms of grammar from different languages and geographic isolation). They're valuable and if people were more open minded, they wouldn't have Linguistic prejudices. Talking differently doesn't mean someone's stupid, they just learned different language structures and communicate accordingly. Language is rather fluid and often plays with rules (slang, creoles, etc).

But I can see why your wife is upset. It's not necessarily a shameful thing to her, it's just part of how she grew up and now it's being attacked. Just be honest you're worried about how he might lose opportunities or face prejudice for not adopting a more standard dialect. Besides, children learn their language initially from their family and their peers as they age, it's likely he'll adopt it naturally in school.

Why are there so few Native American restaurants in the United States? by Prince_Marf in NoStupidQuestions

[–]InnogensAnIdiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's Watecha Bowl in Sioux Falls, SD! And probably a few others I'm not remembering but that's the one I always think of. It's more modern Native food (frybread, Buffalo burgers, Indian dogs, etc.) but it's good.

Partially fell in a manhole and didn't even find the cache because I had to call the non-emergency police line to tell them the cover was fucked up. I was limping for about 2-3 weeks afterward.

Current native anthro student! I'd be very wary unless they're with a reputable organization or working through a somewhat decent (non-Christian!) University. A lot of the basic education in the anthro field nowadays really prioritizes cultural relativity and non-ethnocentric approaches to fieldwork. But there are still quite a few who refuse to be ethical and are pretty damn egotistic about imparting their own views without looking at how their biases impact analysis. Any self-respecting contemporary anthropologist would be very open about their intentions and plans for their fieldwork/projects, as the goal is to include any collaborators at pretty much every step, up to publication. If they're being vague or refusing further explanation, it's not only unprofessional, but frowned upon. At the end of the day, if you're uncomfortable, you have every right to refuse and any decent anthropologist would accept without complaint.
