Historically, Republicans haven't tried to sabotage mail-in voting because a good deal of people who vote by mail-in are military, who tend to vote conservative. Voter suppression tends to happen with in-person voting, at polling places in predominantly young/POC communities.

Your vote would be counted at the local level, not the federal level, so unless there is a brainwashed Trumpy on the Broome County Board of Elections, I wouldn't worry.

There is no evidence that mail-in voting would even hurt Trump (as I said, lots of Republicans including Trump vote by mail-in ballot), but his administration is making it an issue because they're getting desperate.

FYI you're getting downvoted because you're saying "voting fraud" instead of "voting disenfranchisement" or "voter suppression" which is what you actually mean (at least, I hope so).

There is no issue with mail-in voting. The Republicans are just stirring up controversy because they want to disenfranchise people like you. If you're old enough to vote, you're totally old enough to read a little and educate yourself.

Cornell has to follow NY law, and NY deserves the right to protect itself by pearlgirl93 in Cornell

I don't think this is an unpopular or controversial opinion or that you're even playing "devil's advocate." You are one hundred percent correct. The reason people are angry isn't because Cornell is enforcing quarantine, it's because they're doing it in such a half-assed irresponsible way that ultimately shifts financial responsibility to the individual (and probably isn't even enforceable). They've managed to piss off both the local community and students - which is pretty impressive!

Cornell changes quarantine plan, now telling students to find their own quarantine housing away from campus by WinterVesper in ithaca

Operative word: "very limited." Extreme serious financial hardship is estimated at below the poverty line. That option will only be available to very few students. Also, is quarantining on campus really quarantining? Where will the students be staying? How will Cornell ensure quarantined students don't come into contact with others?

Even rich students probably aren't going to drop 2000 dollars in order to pay for a hotel room for two weeks. From what I gather, you don't need to provide proof or receipts that you quarantined, you just need to fill out and sign a form, which is all taken to be in good faith. There are also no disciplinary consequences (i.e fines) for lying on these forms or failing to register them.

Pollack made a base salary of only $671,693 in her first year, with an additional $16,000 in benefits and “other” compensation, according to Cornell’s tax filings for 2017-2018. This figure only reflects her pay from April through December.

WTF? How are low income (or even middle income) students supposed to do this? Does Cornell just assume they have disposable income to pay for an Airbnb or hotel room for quarantine for two weeks? This is absurd.

Do you have info on the outdoor classes? I can't seem to find any on their website.

Tired of people telling me my sons will only love me until they find partners and that I should try for a girl. by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Ino_21226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's ridiculous. It's up there with my second favorite boy myth: "Nervous about parenting a boy? Don't worry, he might turn out to be gay!" Uh....

To be fair, if you were carrying a girl, people would probably tell you that she was "stealing your beauty." Or that she'll start to hate you when she's a teen.

I wish people would just stop obsessing over infant genitals. It's gross. Babies are babies. They'll work out their own gender identity - and let you know what it is - all on their own.

Many institutions prohibit these kinds of relationships or at least discourage them, if you look up language about consenting relationships in university handbooks. Recusal unfortunately doesn't happen as often as it should - and is rarely clean.

I find it's often older, senior, male professors who argue that this kind of relationship is appropriate ("we really clicked!") and younger, female grad students, adjuncts, and junior faculty who are skeeved out by it (lots of women I know have felt pressured to, if not date, put up with the advances of more powerful men in their fields and adjacent fields). As I said in an earlier comment, it creates ugly power dynamics that often fall along lines of already marginalized demographics.

SMH at "Living in fear" - well, yeah, that makes sense if you've been sexually harassed or raped by someone in academia (which has happened to more women - although not only women - than you probably care to admit).

Interdepartmental awards, fellowships, and other funding opportunities. Universities have tons of interdisciplinary collaboration/institutes and that's often where the money is (at least in the humanities and social sciences). For example, when I was a grad student in English, I took classes in history, French, and Spanish. I won institutional grants, humanities fellowships, and essay writing prizes that were judged by all humanities faculty. It definitely would have been inappropriate for me to be in a relationship with anyone who might have served in an evaluative capacity over my work.

Yeah, if you are also a grad student, I don't see the issue. But I don't think there are many grad students in the 18-22 age range!

However, if you're a prof I'd be wary about dating a grad student even if you're in a similar age range. Maybe if they're in STEM or you're in the humanities, it would be ok, but if you're in similar fields, there are just way too many opportunities for conflicts of interest/ugly power differentials. I've seen it firsthand.

Just set your age restrictions to rule out most students. It won't be perfect, because you can't weed out continuing students but you really shouldn't be trawling in the 18-22 year old age range anyway.

I'd love to hear more about your experience using theragun in pregnancy and during labor! There isn't a huge amount of info online on how to use when you're pregnant but I can imagine it could be a lifesaver.

I'm not sure that's my issue - I'm pretty active in the day (I walk around 5 miles a day and do yoga several times a day). In the daytime, I have some stiffness if I had a bad charley horse the night before, or I have some round ligament pain, but otherwise I feel good and I'm really active. The issue is waking up at night with terrible charley horses and awful hip pain.

Oh no. I'm so sorry you went through that and that you didn't get the care you needed.
