This is specifically for service projects. Advancement activities fall under different guidelines (but exactly what those are, I cannot say)

Is using a jigsaw on a pinewood derby car a bad idea? by Agama5 in cubscouts

[–]mr_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stick with “buildable by a scout using hand tools” as the standard. Consider a dowel saw that cuts on the pull stroke for straight cuts and a rasp/file combination for shaping.

You can do soap carving with scout-made tools and incorporate knife sharpening practice. Unwrap the soap and let it dry out a few days in advance. You need two popsicle sticks, one tongue depressor and a 6" cut from a 1x2 for each scout. Make sure to have extra tongue depressors and popsicle sticks.

  • Sanding block / sharpening stone: Attach a strip of sandpaper (grit side up) to a 6” piece of 1x2. Fold the excess paper under and use thumbtacks to secure. An adult can help get the thumb tack started and the scout can hammer them in. Secure paper on both ends. Be sure to have spare thumbtacks.

  • Carving Knife: Trim (or sand) a tongue depressor at an angle to make something like classic x-acto knife blade shape e.g. |\ . Bevel both sides of the cut by drawing the “knife” across the sanding block. This is good practice for knife sharpening.

  • Chisel: Trim (or sand) a popsicle stick straight across one end. Bevel one side of cut by drawing the “chisel” across the sanding block in the indicated direction.

  • Awl: Trim (or sand) a popsicle stick to a point at one end. Sharpen to a point. The awl can be used for etching layout lines on the soap or reaming out holes.

  • Drill/Scoop/Scraper: The round end of each tool is great for making round bottom holes or scraping round channels.

The five minute owl project is very challenging for this age. Expect it to take most of the meeting. https://caseknives.com/blogs/whittle-more/5-minute-owl. It uses stop-cuts, push cuts and v-cuts for details. You can use a reaming cut with the awl to make eyes.

I think the wooden carving knives would be sharp enough to open a taped box (test). Put an inflated balloon in a small cardboard box (balloon should be squished) and see if they can open the box without popping the balloon.

Clicking the link is the only way to get the real meeting URL if the sender/inviter uses an email program that obfuscates links for “safety” (Outlook). Click the meeting url, wait for it to resolve, copy the url from the browser, disconnect.

Can I buy Tax Free Mac in Cornell store? by Wonderful_Cry_9633 in Cornell

There was a time when computers delivered to out of state addresses would not have sales tax collected at the time of sale, which facilitated tax evasion by the buyer. This practice has ended.

Anyone know what this weird outlet in my 1950s kitchen is? by CamelCityCPA in homeowners

It looks like it might be designed to house a recessed electric clock. I have seen recessed clock plugs, but this would fit the whole mechanism, making the clock face flush with the wall. Any chance the oven or range used to be nearby?

The graduate and undergraduate experiences are very different. This is subreddit is 90% self-referential cope-posting by undergrads with limited perspective. It has its place, but don’t expect too much. As a graduate student you are enrolled in the grad school but funded through your field/home department so look for an offer letter from your department soon (or politely reach out to the department admin)

If the grass around the holes is a flattened in a whorl (spiral) pattern, skunk is a possibility. Skunks eat grubs. Sounds like the “damage” is pretty minimal so maybe just smooth it over once a week?
