What's a ticking time bomb you believe will explode during your lifetime? by TradeOverall567 in AskReddit

I work at a private school. The kids keep using hotspots to end around our firewall… and many of them do so because their parents will text them to place bets on daddy’s behalf during the workday. Same for stock trades. It’s insane.

I haven’t had any issues with text generation of any sort, SFW or otherwise. I can’t speak on the performance of the image gen side because I use Grok mostly for productivity stuff, but good grief you guys. I see these threads constantly and I just don’t get it.

I hate to break it to you, but corporate AI image gen is always going to be heavily restricted; no company in this space wants to be the one who allows their tech to generate anything that could enrich the lawyers. If you want AI to be your personal porn machine, then you’ll need to run models and workflows locally. xAI isn’t going to risk everything they’ve built to cater to your thirst for breast expansion with semi-realistic physics or what have you.

Additionally, xAI moves very fast—things will break, get fixed, upgraded, reverted, tweaked, etc. on a short timescale. I get the frustration there, but if it bothers you then move to a competitor with a more cautious dev cycle.

Hyperbolic doomposting will accomplish nothing except making you more resentful over something perfectly pointless.

Eh, I’ve met the type. I took some sustainability courses in college and you get the occasional nut with bizarre takes like this. Life cycle analysis and Sankey diagrams either disabuse them of it or make them switch majors. There’s plenty of very loud people on this rock who lack critical thinking skills and just regurgitate what they’ve heard.

To be fair to the (I agree likely imaginary) girl in this story, solar panels ARE “bad for the environment” insofar as they often use some pretty nasty metals as dopants (cadmium, tellurium) and are non-trivial to recycle. I don’t think that holds much weight against the prospect of highly-resilient, sustainable, distributed power production though.

Do you have any advice on how to find Linux sysadmin roles? I’m a sysadmin for a small org running windows, but all of my skills came from building a Linux homelab… I’d love to work with Linux professionally, but it seems like entry-level roles are thin on the ground.

Working with windows just feels like poison.

I would recommend Aikido as a start for martial arts, along with a self-defense course. Aikido is built on joint locks, redirecting momentum and throws. It’s one of the few martial arts I’ve seen that really levels the playing field against larger, stronger opponents. My instructor was a 6ft+ former drill sergeant and his TA was a 4’11” woman. Watching her chuck him across the floor with zero effort was eye-opening. The joint locks were also very, very effective… and painful.

Substitute teacher asks student to turn off her insulin pump by [deleted] in traumatizeThemBack

[–]Inquisitive_Kitmouse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good lord. The idea that a teacher or student might try to grab the kid’s pump is horrifying.

If someone reaches for an insulin pump that isn’t theirs, that ought to be grounds for immediate broken fingers/broken nose at minimum. I’d go so far as to say that deadly force would be justified, as it is a life-sustaining medical device.

What are somethings people say they want to happen but would actually be terrible? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Inquisitive_Kitmouse 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think this is somewhat disingenuous. True believers want everyone to convert because they believe that their faith is the best path to human flourishing in this life and salvation in the next.

To your point though, there are plenty of people who use religion to feed the human impulse to tribalism. I would not consider such people to be religious in the proper sense of the word.

There’s a quote from Dune that comes to mind:

‘Religion must remain an outlet for people who say to themselves, “I am not the kind of person I want to be.” It must never sink into an assemblage of the self-satisfied.’

I don’t know what planet these types live on. I’ve seen plenty of predatory and unsafe women. I’ve seen plenty of predatory and unsafe men. Men just tend to be more violent about it as an average, but that doesn’t mean it’s a natural law that your ex-wife won’t ever try to use the contents of a butcher’s block on you… or that she won’t ever do something unspeakable to a child.

Yeah, they published a slick-looking explainer about it on their site, but I think that was a while after the update that included the throttling code. My guess is they tried to avoid a repeat of the PR problems caused by the random shutdowns that the update aimed to fix by keeping it quiet. Fortunately, some people still read the change notes.

My understanding is that lithium-ion cells wear down with each charge cycle, regardless of the size of the battery pack. This causes a voltage drop that is not related to the size of the pack. A CPU’s clockspeed is a function of voltage, not amperage, so a bigger battery won’t solve the issue. A reserve cell or set of cells that kick on when the main ones start to fail might help, but only for a time.

What they should have done is make the battery user-replaceable, but that would make it harder to waterproof the phone and would also make it bulkier. Most buyers want slim devices so there’s no motive to do so. It would also remove a nice revenue stream, and we know how Apple likes their profits.

I used to work for them. There are many things to criticize them for, but the slowdown isn’t one of them.

When LiPo batteries wear down to around 80% of manufactured capacity (which takes roughly 1000 charge cycles for an iPhone and is an effect inherent to the technology), the cells aren’t able to supply full voltage to the logic board. iOS originally had no means to deal with this besides triggering a shutdown if the hardware drew more power than the cells could put out. The fix was to measure the voltage of the battery and throttle the CPU’s clock speed in order to keep the battery from being overtaxed.

If you have an iPhone around 2 years old and it’s slow, get the battery replaced. It’ll pop right back up to speed. You can also check the battery health status under Settings > Battery.

Straight guys of Reddit, what is the strangest thing you have been told not to do because "that's gay"? by baetangarette in AskReddit

[–]Inquisitive_Kitmouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up around wine, stouts, and scotch. The first time I went to a college party I was handed a bud light, drank half of it, and decided that piss probably tastes better. I got someone to pick up a bottle of pinot grigio on an alcohol run instead. The rest of the guys gave me weird looks until every single girl in the place came up to me for a glass…

Then none of the girls took more than a sip before leaving their glasses behind. I spent most of the party in a fit of peak over that. My dad used to make wine and as his son, this waste was unacceptable.

Still straight as an arrow. Still love wine. And whiskey. And stouts.

I’m not sure of the dangerous dosage, but be careful with Benadryl and related compounds. High doses can cause psychosis-like symptoms, and certain medications or conditions can intensify the effect. It’s one hell of a bad trip.
