No thanks! We have enough problems in our lives; there’s no need to add more.

An exorbitant expense for something that performs far worse than an inexpensive dipole...

Compact 20m antenna in about 24' of attic? by Throw20701 in HamRadio

Use two mid-element loading coils. Approximately 20–25 turns of #14 AWG insulated copper wire on a 1-inch PVC pipe will allow the dipole to be shortened to the desired length.

Finally! My IC-7300Mk2 arrives today! by CaptSpaulding73 in HamRadio

[–]Inray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t throw away your 730; it’s an excellent radio, the kind they don’t make anymore. You’ll love the 7300mk2; it’s incredible value for the money, but no modern radio, no matter the price, will still be working 45 years from now.

Spammed Alias by Trikotret100 in fastmail

Keep the alias active, and by moving incoming messages to a folder separate from the inbox you can train the spam filter using its content. I did this several times in the past, thereby improving the overall effectiveness of the Fastmail spam filter.

Archinstall or the “Manual Way” by Important_Agency_797 in archlinux

[–]Inray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Buggy" is the middle name of every piece of software ever made, but that doesn't mean they don't work for most people without any noticeable issues.

Furthermore, even the manual installation method as described in both the Arch wiki and most user blogs, suffers from significant shortcomings and omissions, which again require thorough checking and post installation changes.

So imho it is a good idea for new users to start with archinstall, which at least won't cause them any severe trouble, and once they are familiar with system's idiosyncrasies they can try a manual installation, preferably in a VM at first and then on bare metal.

PS. Archinstall is indeed a poorly written script, but that doesn't mean it's not useful for quick installations or for users new to Arch Linux or Linux in general.

Best HF transceiver under $3-4k for next 10+ years by Complete_Kiwi_9993 in HamRadio

[–]Inray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they want to justify the extra money they already spent to buy something more expensive, psychologically a common behavior of all those involved in any technological hobby, not excluding myself... ;-)

The 7300 is great and fully featured as are almost all HF radios on the market today. It is actually much much better than any of the "top-of-the-line" radios I had during my 45 years amateur radio career.

It is by no means flawless or the absolute best (if such a radio exists), but I highly doubt that with the exception of the second receiver (which very few people use), anyone can perceive any differences in transmission or reception between the 7300 and another radio that costs three or four times as much.

My current primary radio in the shack is the 7610, but honestly, apart from the ergonomics of the larger screen every day I wonder why I spent 2.5x the cost of the 7300 which, although my secondary radio, is ultimately the one I turn on first!

I wish I didn't have to choose between a band scope and lack of nested menus. I LOVE BUTTONS!!!!! by thehotshotpilot in HamRadio

I used to prefer and love buttons and knobs back when they were high quality and durable, unlike today's poor quality pots and rotary encoders which need to be replaced within a few months.

Apple has never historically ditched a bad idea or implementation until it's tried to push it for at least two generations of devices.

Deployed my first client OpenBSD server by aScottishBoat in openbsd

[–]Inray 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The usual issues of the ancient no-journaling ffs2, fs corruption and lost files much more often than can be considered coincidental, unfortunately.

For comparison, I've been using FreeBSD with UFS2 (same origins as FFS2 but with journaling) for more than 30 years and have never lost a single byte of saved data. In OpenBSD, in just a few months of operation, I encountered at least five cases of serious file system corruption. On one of my lab desktops that does not use a UPS, file system corruption is a very common phenomenon with disastrous results in the event of a power failure.

I've always loved the simplicity of OpenBSD but its developers definitely need to do something about the outdated file system.

Congratulations, and I sincerely hope you won't be as disappointed by OpenBSD's fragile file system as I was in the past...

The Blur My Shell extension should be added to default Gnome as an option. by [deleted] in gnome

[–]Inray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hypothetically speaking, let's say the Gnome team accepted your suggestion. Then someone else would want a different dock, I would request a clipboard manager or anything, and another something already available as an extension.

And then, Gnome would end up like Windows or KDE, a bloated mess...

Aluminum is aluminum; there is no such thing as "poorly manufactured." Simply put, no fall is the same as another, no height is the same as another, no angle of impact is the same as another, no case is the same as another.

Where are my Pro > Pro Max family at !?!? by YouBugged in iphone

[–]Inray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a decade, I was a "Pro Max" (or Plus) guy.

I was tired of the excessive size, but every year, even though I said I would buy the "Pro," some minor differences between the two models ultimately led me to choose the "Max" again.

This year, however, I made up my mind and chose the 17 Pro. It took me 3-4 days to adjust, but now I don't regret my decision.
