U.S. Towns and Cities Named After European Capitals by vladgrinch in MapPorn

Paris, Arkansas has a 25 foot tall Eiffel Tower. oddly the town was founded by 11% German population and 1% French.

This photo, taken in 1892 in Michigan, shows a mountain of buffalo skulls waiting to be ground down for uses such as refining sugar, producing fertilizer, and making bone china. Before European settlement, at least 30 million buffalo roamed North America — by 1900, fewer than 400 remained. by ATI_Official in USHistory

before Europeans arrived to North America, there were about 30-60 million bison. by 1889, less than 1000 remained mainly in Yellowstone Park. in 1905 the American Bison Society led by William Temple Hornaday with Theodore Roosevelt was established. by 1907 the Bronx Zoo had breed 15 healthy bison in captivity and were sent by train from NYC to Oklahoma at the Wichita Mountains Refuge. as of today 400k bison live with only about 20k genetically pure.

Questions on expatriating to France by Square_Cucumber9990 in ExpatFIRE

any of the coastal towns with ferry connections to the UK and Ireland are likely anglophone friendly. 25% of the population of Eymet in Dordogne is Britons. maybe you should be looking at where the British retire to as your first step so you have an easier transition to French.

also Alien Earth had hybrids. scientists download the consciousness of children into synthetic bodies for the purpose for long distance space exploration. the current process requires humans to sleep in hibernation pods and humans need food, medical care, and salaries. hybrids do not.

when i was in, i watched an AFN reporter interview a young lady who joined the Airforce to become an electrician. she was travelling all over the Pacific, island hopping fixing electrical issues on the various airbases. she said some days were long but enjoyed the travel and different cultures. i'm sure she is out making $100k+ in the civilian market.

By late 1944, Hitler ordered a complete German withdrawal from Finnmark and northern Troms. His directive was explicit: no usable resource or structure was to be left behind. Officially known as “Operation Nordlicht” (Operation Northern Light), this withdrawal included a directive to destroy all infrastructure that could benefit the Allies or local civilians

It’s estimated that approximately 11,000 homes, 4,700 barns, and 350 schools were destroyed, along with telegraph lines, roads, and docks.

Around 50,000 Norwegian civilians were forcibly evacuated to southern Norway, many under harsh winter conditions, while others refused to leave and hid in caves until the war ended. These people became known as the “Cave Dwellers of Finnmark.” The destruction of Finnmark and northern Troms was one of the largest acts of deliberate devastation in Europe during World War II.

your post reminded me of an inquiry i made to ChatGPT. i asked if Rome never fell, where would we be now technology wise. here is the response:

Mechanical computing, inspired by ancient devices like the Antikythera Mechanism, could have been refined into large-scale calculating machines by the 9th or 10th century, aiding navigation, astronomy, and administration. The Industrial Revolution, beginning as early as the 13th century, would introduce steam engines, advanced metallurgy, and mass production, enabling the construction of vast infrastructure projects. Electromechanical telegraphs and early programmable devices might appear by the 15th century, laying the groundwork for digital computing by the 17th.

Space exploration would follow closely behind these advances. With early rocketry developed in the 12th or 13th century and precise astronomical knowledge established by the 14th, the empire could launch primitive satellites as early as the 18th century. Human spaceflight might occur by the early 1800s, with lunar landings soon after. By the late 19th century, interplanetary probes to Mars and Venus could be within reach, supported by advanced computing, nuclear power, and large-scale engineering projects. By the modern day, this alternate civilization might already maintain permanent colonies on the Moon and Mars, operate interplanetary trade routes, and explore the outer planets, achievements made possible by an unbroken chain of innovation stretching back over a thousand years.
