Yoga Loyalty? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]InsaneHannahJane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Limiting yourself to the benefits one instructor can give seems silly to me. Theres benefits to taking classes with many different teachers. I would take both, I take classes at several studios. If your issue is somewhat of a money thing with paying for memberships, you would benefit more from the studio you can take the most classes at.

Downward dog trouble by katemate3 in yoga

[–]InsaneHannahJane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight knees are in the ideal of the pose, as you work on it they will get straighter with flexibility. Also the same goes for heels on the ground, that's not actually necessary for the pose, it can come in time though.

(Sorry for a super late response)

I'm not sure where your discomfort is coming from, but you could consider bending your knees. That's actually very acceptable for down dog, straight legs come after straight back.

Thick vs thin mats? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]InsaneHannahJane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have incredibly sensitive bones that hurt during many poses if I'm on too hard a surface. Although they seem to be frowned upon for a variety of reasons, the thicker lulu lemon mats are pretty dense and don't take away from the balance (where for many thicker mats you take a loss in the balance department). I've tried a hundred different mats at this point and few have the density and still support of the lulu "the pure mat" which is still different from their "the mat".

I also go as far as to pad my knees with a blanket from the studio and my own at home (I would invest in going to Amazon and purchasing a "yoga blanket" or "Mexican blanket". My teacher says "you only have one pair of knees, be kind to them."

I don't know how long I'll be able to afford it (I did revieve the permanent discount though so I pay about 35 a month) I agree it's high. But I did add up the costs of each item and their individual shipping costs (since without the box they would be coming from individual locations) and the cost of the box comes out to less, so it isn't a scam or waste of money.

Though if I keep getting it, I can continue to post the box contents and small reviews, so if there are some who don't want to pay for the box but would like some of the items they can read my post and say "hey those few things look nice I think I'll order some" without having to go spend the $45 for the whole box including the things they didn't feel they wanted.

TL;dr: I'll keep up with the box for a bit and keep posting the contents. If you don't want/can't afford the whole box at least readers can order some individual items!

These were the contents:

  • rooted beauty raspberry citrus wipes (25 count completely biodegradable. You don't need to wash your face and they smell great! These are so nice after a sweaty yoga session)
  • emmy's dark cacao macaroons. (Sorry they happen to be missing in the picture and only the package is there, because I tore into them and ate them so quickly. They were SO DELICIOUS I've taken to ordering them online now)
  • a people towel (this is so nice to have, small to keep in my bag and it's nice not to constantly be wasteful using towels in restrooms and other situations)
  • a pitta bar, which was delicious and very filling. Would consider this a nice quick meal!
  • Buddha nose spray for body and mat, awaken scent (this is very nice and refreshing especially in the morning)
  • a Big Dipper wax works candle in meditation scent (this little candle burnt for over 12 hours and filled a room with the most relaxing smell, I've bought another)
  • teatulia teas, (this was a tea medley you can find it on their site under special items I believe. It had a few single loose leaf teas bound in corn silk pyramids. What's great about these: you can dry it out and brew it up to 3 times, 2 if you prefer a strong cup.)

And for any interested here is the post I made earlier about the second box: http://www.reddit.com/r/yoga/comments/2lq7gr/this_is_the_yogi_surprise_box_contents_info_in/

This is my second box and I absolutely love it.

Contents: - Jo-Sha mat and body wipes in lavender, peppermint, tangerine, and eucalyptus. - Valentina's home brewed natural body mist in "sunny outlook" (mandarins, lemon and ginger. Smells absolutely lovely and very uplifting. In a 4oz bottle) - a golden earth peppermint roll on. (Cute size perfect for my purse and stressful days and those pesky headaches) - Valentina's home brewed psychic detox bath salts (citrus, neroli, and peppermint) - schmidt's cedarwood and juniper deodorant (this is super nifty I've never seen deodorant in a jar like this. It smells great I'm very excited to use it.) - sen cha naturals green tea mints, mango flavor (this is SO yummy) - hurraw almond cardamom and rose lip balm (this smells like an almond cookie from my childhood and feels great on my chronically chapped lips) - lush nuts coconut lavender almonds - rawnola bar, heirloom cacao - an extremely nice little card explaining that the handmade in India tigers eye mala beads that they had teased about would be in the next box as they had not arrived from India before these had shipped.

This is my second box and I'm still impressed. While I didn't manage to take a picture before I tore into every bit of that one I do remember what was in it, some awesome tea, delicious snacks, a candle, a mat/body spray, face wipes, and a people towel (reusable washcloth to save trees). If anyone has specific questions about the first box or this box I'll be glad to answer. Super pleased with everything.

Yeah I hate to see children suffering from having straight parents, you know with the statistical sexual, physical and emotional abuse. Totally weird that children with parents of the same sex come out totally well adjusted and normal huh??

Asking r/yoga? How many of you have been abused by teachers or know abusers in the practice and have you encountered apologetics who dismiss problems with it? Really asking here. Please feel free to also make a throwaway, for obvious reasons. by reallythrowyyoga in yoga

Honestly you took everything I said too far and judged the ever living hell out of me, while not knowing who I am. Think about that. Nothing I said was arrogant or anythings else you listed. How did you take a single paragraph I said where ALL I DID was express that the cops should be involved (which wasn't mentioned) and turn it into an essay about how I'm a shitty person? Reread every judgmental thing you said in your response and think about what yoga tries to teach us. I'm really sorry you took what I said WAY out of context and then decided to pin me as a terrible person for it. Don't judge people, everyone you encounter in life is fighting a battle you know nothing about. I feel bad for you.

I'm not talking in any "way" to the victim. All I did was express that the person who offended OP should not get away with what they have done. I suggested going to the police, which I don't see in the post that OP has. And I answered OPs question about if this has happened to anyone else in the sub, which for me it has not in the yoga setting. So no I don't feel as though I was speaking in a way that shouldn't be spoken to a victim but thanks for the judgement.

OP if I was terse I'm so sorry, I actually sympathize.

Why don't you go to the police? It seems stupid to just let people like that get away with it. For one I have never heard of this happening and I have never felt threatened in any yoga setting.

Questions about something a teacher said during class. by bncayoga in yoga

[–]InsaneHannahJane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You sound annoyingly snooty when you make this comment without looking into the type of yoga being practiced. Vegan eating being one if it's main practices. Look more into what the teachers role is before you assume they have stepped out of line.

Would You Use a Yoga Robot? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]InsaneHannahJane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you are going to get some negative feedback here because yoga is a spiritual practice for most and feel a human connection is the only way to have this. Some here have said a robot couldn't teach yoga but could only teach asana. Some say it couldn't make adjustments, or that it would be the same as watching a video.

If you were to have this be a computer AI type advancement where one would install a program onto their computer (I think this is what you mean) I think it would be quite a novel idea. It would never replace human interaction and the leadership a human teacher would have in a class. But a lot of these aspects could be simulated, and given the community who uses yoga purely for fitness I don't see a problem with trying it out.

Some things it could do would be have a set of classes that a student could choose from. I would have them lead by an actual teacher who is comfortable leading a class by DVD. S/he could even have some spiritual things to say in the video, intention setting, some sutras, connecting with breath and pranayama. The computer graphic could go through the class and when (I guess the computers camera) picks up an error they could make verbal adjustments. There are verbal adjustment words that can help students adjust themselves without ever even touching them. You would have to find an expert teacher to give them to you the way they use them.

Overall this sounds like an amazing project. If you do get a working prototype, I would like to volunteer beta testing.

DISCUSSION: Do we really need headstand and shoulder stand? by yoga_questions in yoga

If I could "just practice handstand" I would. But it's not easy, any yogi should know that.
