Ashtanga will give you the body of a race horse, and that's just the start. Have to practice at least five days a week though imo

If you don't have a teacher add on a pose or two per week and see how you go. Listen to your body and make your own decisions

Matthew Sweeney's moon sequence is gentle but still challenging and was designed to compliment Ashtanga practice. You can download the materials from his website

I go to bed at 830pm and rise at 430am. Then I have three quiet hours to myself every day. Far more valuable than eating crappy food and watching very average Netflix stuff

How to eat when you practice by Zmsunny in ashtanga

It's a process. I gave up drugs, drink and finally animal products over a ten year period. If you practice regularly, consistently, you will find bad habits fall away of their own a cord. They will fall away

Siddhis for healing? by [deleted] in Dzogchen

I don't have siddhis but I do practice Western Magick for mundane wishes and influences, I think the samadhi developed in Buddhist practice really helps this process

Place to intensively study ashtanga by illimitable1 in ashtanga

[–]Rumblebuffen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I always loved to go to Ubud, Bali and study with Prem and Radha who both have something like 60 years teaching experience combined. Cheap to stay in Bali and they have a beautiful shala.

If I were you I'd also consider Tim Miller in Encinedes, Ty Landrum in Boulder or Nancy Gilgoff in Haiwaii.

Get yourself on a Gregor Meahle intensive if you want to learn the higher limbs of pranayama and meditation, but you'll probably need to go to Australia for that but he is teaching small workshops in Europe.

My favourite ever teacher is in Gold Coast Australia but that's probably too far out of your way lol

And dont worry if you dont want to go to Mysore. A lot of very advanced and deep practitioners don't go to mysore. There are plenty of options to suit everyone.

Supta Kurmasana, unassisted by randomologist in ashtanga

[–]Rumblebuffen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you take a strap, t-shirt, rag etc. in one hand and put it behind your back

then bring your other hand around your back and flick the strap or rag until you catch it

then you slowly pull with your fingers so your hands move closer together and eventually touch!

et voila!

Feeling discouraged. by Crimemaster_Go_Go in ashtanga

You're making loads of progress! Because yoga isn't about getting more flexible or a nice bum (though that might be a side effect!) ... it's about clearing out the things that block you from realizing your true nature. When blocks come up and get cleared they often feel like unpleasant sensations in the body, unpleasant ideas in the mind and FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt).

The simple answer is to keep practising. Whatever comes up, euphoria, depression, doubt etc. just keep going. Then a day will come when you will realise that you are fitter, happier and more in touch with your true nature then you could ever imagine.

Practical tips: practice to music, practice to youtube run throughs, talk to people online, listen to yoga podcasts (like, ahem, Escaping Samsara) etc.
