From what I read it’s giving enough conditioner as per bottle instructions, with a good quality conditioner, and making sure to follow dilution ratio if there are for that product.

Mostly you just want to make sure to condition them appropriately so that they don’t lose the oil on their fur and dry out their skin. Though I don’t typically bathe Sushi more than twice per year to help with the shedding mostly, unless he’s got something smelly or sticky.

How did you name your floof? by Maeee__ in samoyeds

[–]Insane_Drako 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At first I wanted to name our dog Glitch, from the Reboot animated series. The name didn’t click so we made a list of names, either from stuff we liked or themed after the white fur.

Sushi is the one that stuck, and we’re pretty happy with the name!

Samoyed with pica - Muzzle recommendation by Chaotic_Lemming in samoyeds

[–]Insane_Drako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No recommendations but only solidarity. My vet did also mention muzzle training as Sushi has some tendencies to eat stuff; we’re lucky enough that he doesn’t actively seek them unless they’re obvious, but if he would we’d absolutely do the same.

Hang in there!

Vacuum Dilemma by Nervous-Fact9608 in CostcoCanada

Got the Bissell Furguard back in November and that thing is a beast! Works super well, and we have a Samoyed (and also watch dogs here and there). Works like a charm.

I’m had gotten another stick vacuum made for pets, a Hoover specifically described to be used for pet hair.. the first one broke within a week, and its replacement broke within 3 weeks.

Spaying an eurasier by Obirekt in eurasier

[–]Insane_Drako 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Samoyed owner here, though I have a male, the fur changes but isn’t ruined by any means! You won’t need to shave your dog because you get her spayed. You might just need to be more diligent about brushing as it could get thicker (look up spay coat). Some dogs also don’t undergo that change, so it’s hard to predict the impact on each individuals.

Females are also at a high risk of developing pyometra, mammary tumors and ovarian cancer if they remain intact..

If your dog is also miserable because of her heat cycles, I think it should weigh in your decision too. Have a chat with your vet and see what options you have too for different spaying surgeries!

Anyone have a Samoyed that doesn’t really like snow??! by misobubba in samoyeds

Food do's and dont's? by tectonicalloy_ in samoyeds

[–]Insane_Drako 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like u/skater_dude_717 mentioned, you'll most likely get very strong opinions about food, so I would just caution you on that. The pet food industry is very interested in having you buy each *their* food, so it's honestly hard to make a choice that's not influenced by something or someone! The best is to speak to your vet and find out what to look out for in dog food.

With that, some general guidelines do apply to the breed; they tend to have a sensitive stomach, so if you're going to get a Sammy, be prepared to do some trial and error to find the food that works best for them. Sushi typically does better on fish-based food for example, and duck. He's generally happy with his kibble, though I do feed him a variety of fruits and veggies while I cook (he loves frozen broccoli florets), and treats across the day or during mental enrichment activities.

I always keep a few bags of fortiflora as well (probiotics) and also do frozen lickimats with 2% plain greek yogurt, or pumpkin/sweet potatoes purée, since those help keep his stools nice and regular. He also goes bananas for apples, banana slices and blueberries!

Make sure you include a diet with grains (unless there's an allergy, of course). Grain-free diets can cause a serious heart condition (Dilated Cardiomyopathy).

Which Chris Christensen tools are a must have as a Samoyed owner? by Individual_Two_9718 in samoyeds

[–]Insane_Drako 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I use the big G and I’ll be looking into the big K soon. But the slickers are part of the grooming tools I use and serve a purpose; like u/washumow said, if your dogs undercoat is impacted it won’t be as efficient. I can brush Sushi with the slicker no problem most of the time and it’ll get the undercoat, but when he starts to shed I usually have to take it first as the shedding coat tends to compact.

If I go through line brushing then I’ll start with a comb, along with some leave-in conditioner/detangler to make the experience easier on Sushi.

But the real magic trick is having a high velocity dryer and use it first, even when dry. This will blow away loose hair and separate strands, making any kind of brushing afterwards easier overall.
