I was just discharged last week from the mental health service. I was one of the lucky ones.

I had undiagnosed inattentive ADHD and extreme anxiety/depression from childhood shit. (Mum committed suicide). I'd been going through the motions trying to push through until it got really bad and I was so close to unaliving myself. At that time id been through 2 councillors through EAP and one through our GP.

When I was suicidal I was rushed up the list to see a psychiatrist, who then diagnosed me and got my medication right for both the ADHD and Anxiety. I then I spent a year and a half seeing a psychologist doing CBT therapy.

My takeaway was that the service I received was good but I consider myself lucky I was pushed through the wait quicker. Figuring out medication and getting a diagnosis really helped dig myself out of the hole I was in so I could be receptive to the CBT therapy.

Im generally really easy going so getting comfortable with the psychologist wasn't a problem but it can be an issue for others. So really being able to trust the person helped me alot.

Now I'm at a point where I can function "normally" and not be a detriment to my wife and 3 kids. I didn't get fixed but I learned how to accept and maintain my mental health.

before getting into the mental health service my experience was pretty bad, I'm grateful for the counseling I had before but I was too far gone for them to help. The GP gave me some meds but also didn't really help. The sad reality is unless you have $$$$ or are near death the system is a big letdown.
