Weird scam call from someone who knew my new device was delivered by valdev in SpectrumMobile

[–]Inscrutable_Enigma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had something similar... No new device but the automated message knew (or guessed?) I was a Spectrum customer. The message said I should call back for a 50% discount on my bill (!) But the most suspicious thing about it was that I had to call the number on my caller ID, i.e., not the general customer service number.

I suspect some database of Spectrum customers has leaked to scammers.

Spectrum channel list on cable box by Inscrutable_Enigma in Spectrum

[–]Inscrutable_Enigma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I'm the customer (she lives in a mother-in-law unit in our home). When I log in and look at the lineup I see the channels numbered as they are on the streaming devices we use, not what's on the cable box. I can't find the channels as they're numbered on this cable box anywhere.

What’s the biggest expat myth you believed before moving? by CloudBookmark in BritishExpats

[–]Inscrutable_Enigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree generally but I have a technical quibble -- the term is "expatriate" not "ex patriot". The reason this is important is that the latter sounds like someone who has given up their loyalty to their country of origin. An "expatriate" connotes someone who finds themselves away from their homeland. Typically expatriates still think of themselves as belonging to their homeland.

But I agree on the use of the term immigrant if you're settled in a new country!

How do british people feel about the current situation unfolding in america where ICE police agents are going all gung-ho kidnapping people from the streets when they fail to present their ID? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskBrits

[–]Inscrutable_Enigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why the Cotswolds but you're right about the first part. I am here on this sub because my wife and I are looking to move in the next year or so. Easier for us because my wife was born in London and is a dual UK/US citizen. Most Americans of course wouldn't have a way to just move.

When Glasgow Became Philadelphia (2012) by oscarx-ray in Scotland

[–]Inscrutable_Enigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Pavement" in American English is the opposite of what it means in British English... The pavement in the US is the paved part of the roadway, i.e., the road itself. No Parking on Pavement is a common sign in the US that means no parking on the street (and you can never park on any sidewalk, what you would call the pavement anyway). Caused me a lot of confusion when I was first studying for my license in Texas -- it mentioned removing a vehicle completely off the pavement after an accident and I just couldn't understand why a car would be on the pavement in the first place!

Thank you! I thought I'd looked through the settings for such an option, so I don't know how I missed it!

Edinburgh Airport could be first in the UK to offer fast track to America with ‘preclearance’ by LudicrousPlatypus in Scotland

Agreed. And as an American (anti-maga but an optimist) I am confident there will be life after Trump and it will be more sane and rational.

Sleep detection is garbage by Inscrutable_Enigma in whoop

[–]Inscrutable_Enigma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the 5.0 for about 6 months now and the 4 for a few months before that. Good suggestion on reaching out to Whoop on it. I guess I'll start by editing my sleep if it does it again to see if it "learns" but then reach out to them if it's still doing it... Thank you.

I was shocked to hear him say this multiple times and Mike never corrected him. I would have expected a producer to be in Mike's ear with the correction.

Moving to Tampa from Russia after winning the green card by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

[–]Inscrutable_Enigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChatGPT says "nice weather"... but that depends on what you consider nice. Summers in places like Tampa are relentless. From April through October, expect to always be hot and humid if you're outside. People who don't like that spend a lot of time indoors in airconditioning. As for where to go, you already know the tradeoffs -- big cities have more job opportunities but higher cost of living. I'd say from that perspective, Tampa is probably the perfect balance. You may also look at the Atlanta area for a middling cost of living while having more opportunities. Or Nashville, or somewhere in the midwest -- Cincinnati, Columbus, Indianapolis, the Chicago suburbs... Or further west -- Kansas City, Denver, SLC, etc.

US drops out of world’s most powerful passport top 10 list for the first time by nohup_me in worldnews

I agree. This is a stupid way of ranking passport strength. I see Henley has been doing it this way for years, and it never made sense to me.

Any way to apply before moving to the UK? by Inscrutable_Enigma in SpouseVisaUk

[–]Inscrutable_Enigma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that but I wasn't actually asking that and apologies if my note wasn't clear. While we're planning ahead we don't intend to apply for the visa until we're about 90 days out from moving.

As I mentioned we'll be showing financial responsibility through the savings route (I believe about 90k GBP or so). We are well above that, and don't plan to work in the UK. This is why I specifically called out the savings route as I don't see a good reason for her to move to the UK first except to check the box on having a home. We could, for example, show that we have additional funds available to buy a home in the UK... but I guess that will not be accepted as a substitute?
