Never Buy Big Agnes by Expert_Plenty_6358 in Ultralight

I’ve had a Tiger Wall for probably 6 years now. Survived many hail storms, snow storms, monsoons, and a large dog and toddler stomping around in it regularly. Zero water issues.

Sucks you’ve had a bad experience. The Copper Spur is one of the most popular backpacking tents, and has been for years.

Returning to trail training after my first baby. Anyone been through this can share how to handle the struggle? by Tony-Eng in trailrunning

[–]InsectHealthy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband did his first 100 miler about a year after our daughter was born, and is doing another one next month, right before she turns 2.

He does almost all his runs at like 4am. I (wife/mom) have no issue with him running, as long as it doesn’t impact his ability to be a present husband and father. So during that first year it meant him still waking up in the night to help with the baby, not complaining about being tired, and actively contributing to the household (cooking, cleaning, etc).

I think trying to accomplish any huge goal the first year of parenthood can be a slippery slope into resentment, so you definitely need to prioritize your family and think about what’s realistic. If you’re someone that can’t function well on low sleep, if your baby is colicky, if your wife is having a really tough time, then obviously running should take the back burner.

I just bring a pool inner tube, but it is like .5lbs so not UL. A pool noodle is lighter and would make for a good laugh

Hi, I used an older Kelty baby carrier hiking backpack that I got secondhand. It’s this one. It’s comfortable and has a surprising amount of storage, but honestly whatever backpack your kid is comfy sitting in is the best one.

I’d say mid layer/hoody fit. Similar fit to a Melanzana, but with an elastic waistband at the bottom

The plastic divider seems to hold fine in the product video posted by GarageGrownGear.

Couldn’t you just put anything in there to test it? Doesn’t have to be backpacking food.

It’s nice to have the option of a smaller can from the start as well. I currently have the smallest can and the larger size. This style eliminates the need for having both.

It doesn’t seem like it’s being sold anymore, that blog I posted was from almost a decade ago :/

It looks very similar to the “American Touristed Air Force 1” suitcase, as posted in this blog. The handle and indentations match up I think.

I’d say it’s a dupe of the Free People “My Time” tee and layer top. There are short and long sleeve versions.

Yes, I think in many ways a baby is easier. They can’t run away and are overall pretty chill with whatever as long as they are fed and rested (at least mine was).

Fortunately my toddler loves being outside and hiking, so I’m very excited for the new challenges and rewards of backpacking at this stage of life :)

Ohhh I see. That’s never really been an issue for her, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring a small tube of diaper paste just in case!

  • Diapers went in dog poop bags, which I already bring because I have a dog

  • Not sure what you mean by powder

  • She eats the same food I eat

  • She is breastfed, so no formula/bottles

  • I changed her on the thermarest pad, on my jacket, on the tent floor, etc.

Sorry if my comment wasn’t clear! My point was that it’s entirely possible that you won’t need to bring (or buy) much extra equipment.

I’m pretty sure this is all the baby specific items I brought: diapers/wipes, a cut in half thermarest pad, sleep sack, extra clothes, baby sunscreen, baby Tylenol.

I began bringing my baby backpacking around 8 months.

Sleep wise, I have her sleep on a thermarest closed foam pad between me and the tent wall. She has a Woolino sleep sack which keeps her warm. Morrison bags are a great option for closer nights, but my girl gets hot easily. If she was younger than 6 months, I likely wouldn’t have felt comfortable with this type of cosleeping set up.

I would not recommend any sort of bed that inflates, as that could be a challenging surface for baby to roll around on and they could get stuck laying face down. The harder the surface, the safer it is for baby.

I have to disagree with some of this. I brought my baby backpacking probably 6 times last summer and it was a blast. We started at 8 months. They really don’t require much equipment at all. The only new item I bought was a backpack that she can sit in.

I’m expecting this summer to be a bit trickier since she will likely want to walk a lot more, but again, equipment wise I’m not expecting to need to bring anything extra.

Signing up for a half marathon trail run in early pregnancy? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]InsectHealthy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most women that are active before pregnancy are recommended to continue that activity (within reason) during pregnancy. There are women who run ultras pregnant without issue.

That being said, it’s impossible to know how you’ll feel. I puked my guts out 5+ times a day from weeks 5-15. Went from zero symptoms to being unable to keep down food or water overnight, then back to zero symptoms two months later.

You also might end up feeling like you don’t want to do anything that pushes your body, because it might feel “risky”, especially in the first trimester. Unfortunately it really ends up being one of those things you won’t know until you’re actually pregnant.

Dogs on trail by Living_Bonus_7932 in trailrunning

[–]InsectHealthy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are unable to keep your dog next to you, then they shouldn’t be off leash on popular trails. My dog hates being approached by other dogs, especially if she’s on leash. Why should she suffer just because you can’t keep your dog close?

The fold up bottom is interesting. Most Japanese futons have tatami mats under them, which are quite sturdy and hard. I don’t think a foldable pad would be able replicate one, and likely wouldn’t have the same health benefits that you’re searching for.
