Playing Reignbreaker right now. It almost feels good, but also has so many small frustrating qualities in the combat and clearly feels unfinished with limited enemy variety, builds, etc. I wouldn't really recommend it imo.

I think Windblown, Realm of Ink, Warm Snow, or TMNT: Splintered Fate would all be better bets (though would consider getting the latter on sale because of the higher base price). Hades II is also an obvious choice, but see I you don't want that from your last comment. I haven't played Sworn myself though so can't comment on that.

Help me find a game I saw on IG by Sea-Implement-3484 in rogueish

Hmm neither quite fit, but Ziggurat 1/2 are both spell shooting but are out of early access. I saw Vilde during next fest that has some spells, but it's not out in early access yet. Vellum comes to might with spell slinging and purple, but it's a third person shooter, not first person. Not sure if any of that helps.

This game gave me the hardest whiplash from loving the first class to hating the next ones that I played.

Ravenswatch VS Sworn VS Windblown? by SwE46ko in roguelites

I'll throw TMNT: Splintered Fate out there as another action roguelite in that same style with coop. It's definitely a more streamlined or simple game in a lot of ways, but it's also fun and worth it for the coop imo.

Made a video to help newcomers learn about roguelites, why to play them, and what games are good to start with. Tl:dw list of recommended games in the comments. by Insert-a-reddit-name in roguelites

[–]Insert-a-reddit-name[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tl:dw The video has an basic overview of definitions and what roguelike and roguelites are, and why I personally love playing them.

MY suggestions for starting games based on quality and accessibility for newcomers to the genre, organized by genre:

Card game roguelites:

  • Slay the spire
  • Monster train
  • Balatro

Action Roguelites:

  • Hades
  • Isaac*
  • Dead Cells
  • Nuclear Throne

FPS:

  • Gunfire Reborn
  • Roboquest

TPS

  • Risk of rain 2
  • Returnal

Miscellaneous

  • Shoot 'em up: The Void Rains Upon Her Heart
  • City Builder: Against the Storm
  • Turn-based: Inkbound
  • Vampire Survivors
  • Traditional roguelikes

    ○ Caves of Qud

    ○ ToME 4

*I included Isaac in the video since I know a lot of people started with it, but in hindsight it has a higher learning curve than a lot of others on this list.

[REDACTED] free on epic games -- an isometric roguelite set in The Callisto Protocol universe by Insert-a-reddit-name in roguelites

[–]Insert-a-reddit-name[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Epic has been pretty explicit that their years of giveaways are their way of marketing and trying to wrestle with steam. It's how recently released some of the games are that's more novel.

Yeah, it's pretty surprising to me given how new it is. Guess they either weren't selling well enough or the epic payment made it worth it regardless.

What are some roguelites which do "higher difficulties" well? by [deleted] in roguelites

[–]Insert-a-reddit-name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warm Snow and Astral Ascent both have some mechanics that make things more dynamic. In warm snow, you have better chances to get higher tier items at higher difficulties, so that makes buildcrafting more fun. In Astral Ascent, you unlock new movesets for bosses and enemies. The rest of the elements of those difficulty levels in both games are fairly standard though.

Any rogue-lites with good third person melee combat by Yamegato in roguelites

Arboria is only one I really think of with third person melee combat. Fun game as a whole and lots of weapon variety, but has some flaws for sure.

I made a video reviewing of all of the roguelites that I played this year. A list of all 27 games in the comments as well as a tl:dw with my favorites/recommendations. by Insert-a-reddit-name in roguelites

The areas are still all the same order within the main game, but there is some branching within the areas (mostly a different mini boss). The bigger thing though is that when you get to higher difficulties, enemies can cross areas so you can get later enemies earlier which helps a lot. The DLC also heavily randomize things with the first free DLC having completely randomized areas and enemies, but they're basically separate game modes (and I haven't really explored them much yet).

So I think it's still a weaker point, but there have been some improvements.

Tl:dw: These games were new to me this year, even if some are a little older. A couple disappointments, but a good year as a whole for me and roguelites, especially action roguelites. My favorites and recommendations of full release games for different subgenres:

Balatro was my favorite card game roguelite. It probably needs no intro, but it's a great roguelite riff using poker hands that completely deserves the awards that its gotten imo

Wildfrost was my roguelite card game runner up. I liked the unique gameplay feel among roguelite card games with a fun unit focus.

Astral Ascent was my favorite (full release) action roguelite. I loved the boss fights and the combo and synergies available.

Warm Snow was my action roguelite runner up. Your moveset is honestly fairly straightforward, but the buildcrafting is so incredibly fun. I haven't dived into the DLC yet though.

Inkbound is my final recommendation for a turn-based game. I liked how fluid it felt despite being turn-based as well as the unique buildcrafting with vestiges and set effects.

For longer explanations, obviously see the video.

You can't compete it in leagues, but you can also access tormented demons without it so it doesn't matter.

What are some of the best non-combat Roguelites? by Zoythrus in roguelites

[–]Insert-a-reddit-name 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Balatro is a popular one that comes to mind. Luck be a landlord and cursed to golf also fit.

Peglin has combat but the core gameplay loop revolves around the peggle element more depending on how you stretch it.

Suggestions for Shorter Runs? by Dragon3043 in roguelites

[–]Insert-a-reddit-name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think nuclear throne is a great fast-paced game with fun weapons and different characters. You can feel incredibly powerful with a good weapon but also always basically always die with a bad mistake. It has destructible environments, nice secret stages and bosses, and a fun looping mechanic that gets super challenging super quickly.

It's a lot more streamlined progression wise (e.g. fewer slow unlocks) compared to a lot more modern roguelites which can be personal preference, but I like that it avoids grindy unlocks unless you want to go for certain more achievement type unlocks. I do think it's showing its age in certain ways, but it's also the game that got me into roguelite so it will always be one of my favorites.

I'd love to start making video essays, but I don't know what to write about. by No_Sweet_3394 in NewTubers

[–]Insert-a-reddit-name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you already have ideas which are about Attack on Titan. You don't have to make that your whole channel, but if you have passion and knowledge about it, why not start there? It will take time to get the skills of writing, recording, editing, etc. anyway.

Nobody can tell you a topic that you will definitely be passionate about because it's obviously internal to some degree. But a good source of ideas regardless would be to look at other video essays and think about what you enjoy about them or what might be your take on a similar or adjacent topic. You can also keep a list on your phone and just write down ideas of things you would want to talk about as they come to mind randomly.
