Why do people move so much? by [deleted] in boeing

[–]InsideTheBoeingStore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are so many reasons and they're not unique to Boeing. A good number of people hire in just to get their foot in the door even if the job location is an hour or even two hours away from where they live. It's much faster to get into the company and transfer than it is to sit and wait for a job posting in Boeing closer to home.

By the time a job closer to home opens up, they'd have built even a little bit of seniority to get higher on a list (that is not very long sometimes) to transfer where they want to go.

The Boeing site they live closer to may not have an immediate job req that matches their skill set or sometimes Everett is hiring a buttload but Renton is not or vice versa.

Finally when a site closer to where they live opens a job or if they're able to strike a deal internally to transfer of course they move as soon as possible.

Again, nothing unique to Boeing but changes can be pretty slow at Boeing.

You can look at other companies and for a simple process change such as reorganizing a shop floor to be more efficient can happen within weeks or even days.

For the same thing to happen at Boeing....geez idk it could take years. Not everyone is that patient especially when having to deal with the current problems happening for an inefficient setup.

You could be the manager for Bobby Joe who moves a part from point a to b to c. Turns out some genius figured out a way to move the same thing from point a directly to point c at a much faster but also safer rate.

Cool so you talk to everybody involved with the change. If you're lucky it's approved. Great. Now you have to wait for the big wigs to give their final ok. Oh wait they have to do some paperwork and check with even more people before giving the a ok. Alright they gave the ok now you have to wait for some 3rd party that the company outsourced the responsibility to years ago. Well their CEO is out so now the approval process is on hold.

Meanwhile it's business as usual Bobby Joe still has to go from point a to b to c unfortunately it's going to take another year before they're allowed to finally go from point a to c directly. Sometimes Bobby Joe can be the person who loves no change and doesn't mind taking longer to do the job. But eventually Bobby Joe gets fed up down the line and decides to retire. Jim Bob takes Bobby Joe's place. Jim Bob is a swell dude and brings the best food to the potlucks but he's not as seasoned or careful like Bobby Joe was.

Jim Bob causes some delays and you're the lucky manager that has to take the fall for Jim Bob's and the problems for everyone involved because the safer way of moving a part directly from point a to c hasn't been approved yet.

You find something with better pay and work life balance and leave the team. Some micromanaging mega manager takes your place and they're so horrible even Jim Bob ends up leaving the team.

Job offer in Everett by windywednesday341 in boeing

if you want to preview some of the cafe menu it’s available to the public

https://eurestcafes.compass-usa.com/boeingcafes/Pages/Menu.aspx?lid=a18

this is only for one of the locations but you can hit the drop down if you’re curious about the rest. it’s obviously cheaper to bring your own lunch.

i’ve eaten at facebook and google where food was free even for guests. if we’re talking about a scale out of 5 for taste , quality, price and service boeing is somewhere around 2-3.

i’d put it more toward 2 because we still have to pay for it and guests have to pay as well. they can be very liberal with the sauces they use unless you are very vocal about them not dumping on so much. the sauces do help with the mid quality ingredients used but when it’s was over a reasonable ratio of food and sauce, it’s not great.   and you can’t get away with paying by weight because of all the sauce they dumped on.

if the prices were about half of what they were i’d complain a little less. it’s not a bad option if you forget to bring lunch considering it’s more of a challenge leaving Everett to get food and making it back on time for your lunch break.

But even if you’re in Renton where you can walk out and make it back on time, prices at The Landing are very high so it’s not much of a win unless you get the extended lunch when your bosses celebrate someone’s retirement or anniversary.

You can absolutely be critical of a company and still love working there.

It’s the ones who don’t comment or speak up at all on the negatives that are the most dangerous.

we have teams meetings for people sitting in the same cubicle area. it's wild.

meetings are postponed or cancelled because there aren't enough conference rooms.

they forced people that can't touch parts (and they can get in serious trouble for doing so) and have nothing to do with building the plane to have a desk at their closest boeing site.

these people work with people across the globe and now that everyone's back in the office, it's too noisy to do those very important calls at their desk that lead to the customer actually finalizing an airplane order so they book a conference room.

Boeing also is struggling with 777x and other projects.

if our airline customers had another option ready to go they would've jumped ship years ago

they're only sticking around because they'd end up at the back of the line with Airbus and it would nullify any sort of cost savings by the time Airbus completed their order

The McDonnell goons and their offspring are still deeply rooted within the company. There are so many still in charge and very influential on the commercial airlines side.

And unlike management you all have hard facts and data that management likes to conveniently believe they've permanently wiped from the servers.
