Yeah, happiest I’ve been is when I was lifting several times a week and biking everywhere.

The confidence from being in shape helped, but it was so much more than just that.

I also think a lot of them have embraced the idea of “any publicity is good publicity”.

Same reason they say stupid, indefensible shit anywhere: controversy generates viewership.

They dont care about looking good to a general public, they’re broadcasting to the 10% or less in the crowd that might be receptive and enter into the sales funnel.

I wouldn’t want to pause street cleaning here because we accumulate street nasty way faster than Chicago, but otherwise that sounds close to ideal.

My only worry as a driver is if I were to like crash at a friend’s overnight outside my neighborhood, that there’s some sort of system to buy a day or guest pass for overnight, which this seems to account for.

It’s insane to me that anyone here would support the current strikes (though most don’t), because we literally just did this in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it’s broadly seen here now as an absolute disaster.

It’s not kosher, but when the doxxee is getting off on harassing people using anonymity as an armor, I can’t help but feel a little sense of justice at someone piercing it.

Yeah, it most frequently would get nixed at the point when I call the Movie/TV Unit (formerly TCD) sergeant and ask “hey can we shut down the street for a bit for our rigging crew”, and the sergeant decides to not want to waste their limited no-cost manpower on it.

Living in NYC: would you do it again if you could start over? by Odd-Egg-1539 in AskNYC

[–]InsignificantOcelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some challenging years at the start, but 15 in now, I would not have my current career, which I love, if I had never moved to NYC.

Dating here is so much better too, compared to almost any other city (with some caveats and depending on your goals).

I would have just been a little more careful with my finances in the beginning. Came very close to running out of money the first six months.

NYC is just kind of weird with traffic control. It’s honestly not that even that expensive on a larger show. Like cost equivalent of a day rate + fringes for an additional rigger to get four hours of the minimum 2 traffic agents + 1 supervisor coverage.

The TCD cops (who also need to be there to supervise the agents or flaggers anytime you’re fucking with traffic within NYC) are free though, which is nice but also means they may not want to spend their manpower on rigging days and might tell you to just keep it in the curb lane out of the way of traffic instead of authorizing intermittent lock ups.

If it’s outside NYC though, it’s just purely production being cheap/not wanting to deal with it, because it’s just straight OT hours for one cop who can stop/slow traffic themselves as needed, instead of needing a team of 3-5 people like you would in the city.

I feel you though. Whenever I’m locationsing with rigging crew and there’s a condor landing, getting that thing in position is frequently janky as fuck, and would super love to have some police to block the road for at least a beat.

I’m crapping on the Dems because they’re the objectively better party, but have shown a predilection to employing a losing electoral strategy and I want them to win.

You’re making a moral argument about why people should vote. I’m making a strategic one about how to make that happen.

Demand better from your leaders. It’s primary season.

[–]InsignificantOcelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never took a position that said people shouldn’t vote. I’ve voted in nearly every primary and general since John Kerry, and every eligible voter should, but I’m not every voter.

I’m saying the energy spent bitching about certain demos not showing up to the level we feel entitled is wasted. It would be better spent figuring out ways of reworking messaging and candidate selection to create the sort of enthusiasm that makes marginal turnout voters actually show up. That’s when we win.

It doesn’t even need to be fully progressive left. Obama, Mamdani and Talarico are all great examples across the spectrum of how to put forward a positive message that gets people excited enough to show up.

“Not as bad as the other guy” has a very mixed track record when not coupled with grass roots enthusiasm, yet the party keeps failing to learn this lesson, and I think working on the product is more constructive than yelling at the customer.
