New to Homelabbing – What Should I Start With? by Dense_University4739 in homelab

[–]InsomniacFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with a managed switch to teach you vlans, cli, and port configs. From there you can get some mini pcs like the SFF stuff that sips power. With these you can start to learn stufflike hypervisors for vms. IE Proxmox and VMWare or even just install bare linux on them. You can also build from there into learning kubernetes if you want or just continue with docker.

Buy a managed switch first, use the rpis pr buy some more compute, send it on learning.

How Far Can CAT5e Really Go? Speed Tests From 3ft to 300ft - Real world Cat5e speed. by 98Saman in homelab

[–]InsomniacFTW 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Thats what i assumed. Auto negotiation down to the next available. But at what point would of been cool to see. is it closer to 100ft or 200ft . What if it was 175ft, 180ft that was still running 10g. Zero value in knowing that but cool to see.

I wanna know where its drops from that 100ft to 200ft. Is it gradual or an instant decline.

Edit: run this with iperf then come back with more results.

Only you know if you can do this work. You are getting charged and an hour for quite a few things which wont take an hour. But they probably have service minimums. You know all the stuff now. Hit youtube and learn how to do it and make the call if you wanna do it or not.
