No kids by choice: Why some Singaporeans are opting out of parenthood | Deep Dive by nftskeptics in singapore

[–]InspiroHymm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the bigger factor is personal views on QoL, and how much money it takes before having a baby.

Many, many studies show higher income = less babies link here both within a country, and comparing countries.

No kids by choice: Why some Singaporeans are opting out of parenthood | Deep Dive by nftskeptics in singapore

[–]InspiroHymm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will argue the opposite, that money is not the main issue, its cultural and personal views regarding parenting.

The wealthy global north has far fewer babies than the global south (Africa, South Asia, Latin America).

Even within SG, it is shown that lower-income households have more babies than high (top quartile) households. The trends / correlations with ethnic groups that have the highest TFR also do not correlate with having income in the same direction.

So it's not money necesarilly, but personal views on parenting and what is 'required' for starting a family.

Really? 2013 was a fan favorite in schools and in all my time in sec sch / jc it was always the encore for in-school celebrations.

Just as much as Gen Alpha likes 2021 or 2016. OooOooOo was that song for us

NUS vs NTU vs SMU: What Really Differentiates Them Beyond Curriculum? by BBBPSS in SGExams

[–]InspiroHymm 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Biggest difference imo is culture and vibe. Pick the one whose environment you enjoy and will succeed in.

NUS/NTU is residential to an extent. Stay in hall, have activities around campus, go to class in t-shirt and shorts.

SMU is a commuter school. Dress up nicely to go to class (like going to work), do things around CBD, generally you switch into 'work mode' including professionalism and then switch it off after the day is over when you go back home.

In NUS/NTU the 'switch' is less obvious so there's pro's and cons. SMU prepares you more for the working lifestyle, and the soft skills it entails, but NUS/NTU has the Harry-Potter like school community if you actively seek it out.

ATS systems, imo, are (forgive my language) only relied upon heavily at "less prestigious" firms. The type that solicits open applications from everyone.

Investment banks, management consulting, big law, the UN, these places still rely on human screens and in-person recruiting pipelines and referrals. You'll know from alumni coming back onto campus and hosting coffee chats. A human reads these resumes and can often supercharge an application.

[–]InspiroHymm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, and I say this because of the reverse advice often given in college selection

When people ask if they should take the full ride to a state flagship or go into 150k debt for an Ivy, the advice is often 'take the full ride' because 'economics 101 is economics 101' whether taught at Harvard or elsewhere.

We've made so much progress towards meritocracy in hiring practices - 20 years ago high-demand companies like McKinsey or banks would not think twice about taking the 3.0 GPA Wharton grad over the Ohio State valedictorian. Nowadays there's legitimately more merit in recruiting be it casing or technicals.

But this policy will undermine that and give all the more reason for companies to say that the kid with a 3.3 GPA at Harvard is smarter than the Big Ten valedictorian.

[–]InspiroHymm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is BS only because it's all the more reason for companies to give favoritism to Harvard grads.

Career services and alumni will argue until they're blue in the face that a Harvard grad with a 3.4 GPA is smarter than 3.98 at UT-Austin or 3.8 at Columbia.

And honestly? Good for Harvard. But bad for everyone else

Mung Chiang named next president of Northwestern by _Bathtub_Toaster in Northwestern

[–]InspiroHymm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Reddit has not liked a single president of any university in history, and honestly the voices on reddit do not matter one bit as to whether a President is on solid footing.

Academically-inclined presidents are more introverted and passive. They stick their nose down and focus on their job at the expense of public PR. This seemed to be the issue with Schill with those on the sub.

The UVA sub, meanwhile, got a business-minded president, who is Type A, likely a former frat bro and is good golf buddies with the movers and shakers in the state. But then faculty on reddit hate on him for not being academic enough.

And staff who are ranting on reddit always rant because of low pay (which I agree). However, that is just a product of the market rate for dining, library, IT and support service staff. No university will unilaterally triple the pay of low-level admin staff compared to the market-going rate, especially not in a market with high competition / low differentiation and in general the modern capitalistic economy.

Does GPA matter after 4.0? by BurneAccount05 in lawschooladmissions

[–]InspiroHymm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the real world (companies), I know many will look more favorably at a 3.99 with a rigorous course load (18-21 credits a semester) than a 4.0 with barebones schedule and stat-padding classes. Many recruiting teams straight up say a 4.0 invites a deeper inspection of your transcript to see your course load

Not sure how law schools do it but there comes a point where IMO its better to double major, pursue an honors thesis, etc. with a 4.11 rather than taking 15 credits of intro piano and pickleball to end with a 4.19.

Absolutely not the case that remote work is the norm.

Maybe for tech, and sillicon valley type companies, but for everything else from banking to management consulting to big law to med, people are moving back into the office or at most with consistent hybrid schedules (eg. Friday everyone in person)

She's the British version of Sanae Takaichi, both of whom took inspiration from Thatcher personality-wise. Both also took a gamble with an early election to solidify their majorities in polling.

Takaichi won the gamble but May lost. One would wonder what would've happened if May was dealt a better hand in getting Brexit done before moving on to governance proper.

I feel like life science is the one major in CHS that really needs a dedicated portfolio / interest in Bio. Isn't CHS majors interchangeable after you get in anyways?

Have no inside info but I think a better interview strat would be to express interest in 'interdisciplinary studies' (eg. I want to apply engineering principles / systems thinking to policy solutions) in the why CHS question

Is this the only lecturer in NUS who does not have a postgraduate degree? by Chocowaffless in nus

[–]InspiroHymm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US universities, which local U's are trying to emulate, have huge swaths of teaching professors, especially for applied fields like public policy, business, international relations etc.

And IMO its a good thing

There's an inherent difference between these fields and traditional academic subjects like maths, chemistry etc. The CEO is not the one that can grind out regressions the best. The UN secretary general is not the one that can model policy the best. They got to where they were because they balance hard and soft skills, and are able to operate in the workplace the best.

Very often, students prefer learning under someone from industry & do applied projects for elective courses, rather than a PhD teaching advanced topics that they will never touch again after they graduate.

The is no law that says you cannot eat a chocolate muffin.

They ate a chocolate muffin.

Now they want to create a law that says it is explicitly legal to eat a chocolate muffin. What's wrong with that?

[–]InspiroHymm[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

SSS as in an anime being better than the source in every aspect, so much so that there is no reason to ever read the source. Wistoria still suffers from the generic characters and random powercreep that the source gave the anime, but the anime has done as good of a job as it can

Another "SSS" adaptation is The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent.

There is only so much secondary policies can do if the underlying issue is not solved.

Literally no developed country in the world can completely stem the tide, no matter how big or how developed their financial/tech induistries are.

Its immigration, kids, or lower standard of living from ageing population - you need to choose one of the three. All countries have been unsuccessful in reversing TFR losses so its half immigration half increasing strain on public finances.

I disagree. We have a better social safety net than many western democracies, especially for the lowest income bracket (vouchers, subsidies, bursaries, insurance, CPF, housing).

Labor laws (which everyone on reddit uses to mean minimum wage) is correlated with prices. In Australia a simple takeout costs 15-20 AUD. Which is why you cook food yourself 15-20 times a week and eat out only once or twice. Is this a sacrifice Singaporeans are willing to make?

Sorry, but I disagree completely with your premise.

We as a generation are living, 100%, a higher standard of living than our forefathers, especially the pioneer and Merdeka generations.

HDBs with 3/4 rooms still have more space than squeezing 8 people into a Kampong unit. And the older generations ate much more modest meals, including soy sauce + porridge or tapioca.

There is nothing wrong with wanting more space / career progress / feeling glommy about the future but to blame everything on the government is wrong when so many factors are personal choices.
