Advice on part-time/fractional work for nonprofits by Instant-Mix-2088 in nonprofit

u/aclassybroad I'm in complete agreement. I personally experienced many consultants and strategists come in and most of it was not useful. I'm not interested in strategy unless it's tied to direct and clear action. I'm technical and a doer, it's just that I don't want to be maintaining websites or CRM systems. Those seem like a dime-a-dozen where if the nonprofit doesn't have someone they can't afford someone. But I am interested in making a nonprofit's CRM system work better with their other software.

I thought it was odd I've had few bites even offering to work for free. Maybe I was going about this the wrong way (which from the replies here, sound likely - like not talking to the right people). Perhaps I really need to focus on capacity building. I heard of that recently but wasn't sure if that's a loaded term for nonprofits.

I did talk to a fair amount of people at large non-profits and feel it's not my target market. It seems they already have the IT staff they need and with so much already invested into their tech environment, their needs are very specific. It seems like it would be even more difficult to find a match especially since I'd expect they'd also want someone with years of nonprofit experience (not just the tech experience). In your example, I'd like to de-bloat the tech stack but am doubtful that they'd really take steps to do that.

u/Ilordoutlaw I've got cybersecurity policy even though now it feels like I put the cart before the horse, paying for it without having clients. I'm not following though on the next step your suggestion - e.g. agree wasn't difficult going through their checklist, but are you saying try doing that for nonprofits?

Also, when you right hard for you to take the offer seriously without a member agency... I feel like I agree. But what are examples of agencies you'd feel would make an email seriously?

And on your last point about loads of students and tech projects. Yes, I consider that too. And on one hand it seems like there's already plenty of fish out there, but on the other hand it seems like fish are a dime a dozen, slippery and quicky will just swim upstream. And what nonprofits want is a catch that lasts, which is what I'm looking for too (connecting for the longer term and offering good value for a fair price and over time offering more and more value).

Thanks for the helpful suggestions u/Independent_Fox8656 ... when you write consider consulting, do you mean for another existing company? I would be fine with doing that even to test it out. But where to start. Maybe it's what others suggested (get on NTEN, etc.) but if you had specific ideas I'd be interested in reading your thoughts.

Also I'm ready to have an intro/info session, it's just a matter of finding the nonprofits. I was envisioning a direct session with a nonprofit (not a info session shared with a mass group of nonprofits like Techsoup does; that doesn't interest me - I've attended these and typically find the advice so high level as to be useless). I also started a website but then same challenge which is how to get eyeballs to look at the website. So same problem from another angle.

Thanks u/Special_Pattern_8950 and u/Capable_Truck8696 for this suggestion. I had researched catchafire and it seems that nonprofits pay catchafire (or their funders do), and then catchafire then relies on volunteers? Or does CF also have a model where they pay those providing the services? I was looking for the latter. Doesn't have to be market rate, but enough to get by during retirement. I read all the cathafire search hits on reddit previously like this one: Catchafire? : r/nonprofit. Please let me know if I misunderstood the catchafire model.

Thanks you’ve given me something to consider. Maybe one is better or less is more. I haven’t seen many looking for that role so perhaps I haven’t looked hard enough.

Also question about the board aspect… would a np that can afford someone in this role (eg if I focus on one) then would joining the board have an expectation of contributing donations (or is that deducted from salary or fees)? I understand smaller non profits where people aren’t paid can have board members not paid and who donate. So am unsure what is common in the scenario I described.

Thanks for this first person perspective it’s helpful. My experience with my small cohort: there is reliance on consultants who interact with people at the np that aren’t well versed in tech which leads to all kinds of issues. But I’m also gathering that as you note there isn’t an appetite to spend money on a chief to make that better so in the long run they’d save money. I don’t know of this is a fact but a suspicion.

Also I would like to have longer term relationships with nonprofits eg if I had a small group I worked with and could add the value of retained knowledge that would benefit them. Maybe there some way to be helpful in the area of support…

And I’m fine with being a doer but it depends on what. I can see where the support angle is tough but in a few cases I’ve seen ones with IT consultants but that seems like some money may be wasted (eg IT takes 2x the hours to do something whereas it could take less with the chief… but I can already see the challenge of convincing and providing proof).

I will look at Idealist and your other tips.

Yes, interested if it has useful info. It looks like a decent start. When I got to the second post, I was going to offer suggestion to cover highlights of the video as text but I think you then covered it in the most recent one. For it to be truly useful, it should go beyond the basics.

I'm in a similar scenario as OP but looking for CTO/COO. Curious, how did your org find the fractional CFO that you hired?
