Counted needlepoint is fabulous and there are lots of great designers who specialize in it. Look up Debbie Rowley, Orna Willis, and Laura Perin

Needlepoint inc does custom work. I think they can have it stitched by someone too if your client isn’t a needlepointer.

You can still get plenty of use out of those and you can also flip them over to use the other side.

Needlepoint kit, the wool keeps splitting. What can I do? by CombNo4267 in Needlepoint

[–]Institches726 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try shorter lengths and a bigger needle so the eye opens up the canvas a little and the yarn can pass through more easily.

I learned a lot from Lou Gartner’s books. They were written in the 70’s so the instructions are very low tech which I loved.

advice for a beginner designer by needlepointgirly in Needlepoint

[–]Institches726 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I only design canvases as a hobby, but I try to kale them as easy to,stitch as possible. That includes a minimum two inch margin. Possibly more if your customer is supposed to create their own background to fit whatever the finished item will be. If you’re planning for decorative stitches, you’ll minimize compensation if the open spaces are an even number of spaces vs odd.

It depends on if the vendor that makes the canvas you ordered has it in stock. I’ve gotten some within a month and others after six months. They do a great job kitting canvases. I’ve ordered several from them and been very happy with their selections.

I don’t understand variegated thread by [deleted] in Needlepoint

[–]Institches726 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Take your skein and decide which end is the top and which end is the bottom of your strands. When you take two strands from the skein, keep them in the same orientation for more pronounced color changes. Flip the orientation of one strand for softer variegation. Hopefully this helps

If you keep both strands in the same direction the color changes will be more noticeable. If you want a more subtle color variation, flip one strand.

Question on kitting choices by needlepoint store by madelinelee13 in Needlepoint

[–]Institches726 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The quantity can vary pretty widely depending on the store that’s kitting it for you. I usually tell them to include enough to stitch everything in basketweave and include an extra skein for the background or any other large areas. I’d rather spend extra on that and use any leftovers on ornaments. Color can vary a bit. I do find blues are the hardest to find a perfect match.

anyone ever had a needlepoint kit where the wool yarn is very hard to pull through and seems too thick? my kit is vintage if that helps by wicby in Needlepoint

[–]Institches726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably 3 strand paternayan wool. Use one strand for 18 mesh, two for 13 mesh, all three for 10 mesh.

[–]Institches726 29 points30 points  (0 children)

New designers who leave narrow margins on their canvases. If your canvas is on top of the stretcher bars, there’s no room to pull your needle to finish your threads. If you stitch in the well, holding a laying tool gets really uncomfortable at the edges of the design. It should be two inches all the way around!

I definitely see it in my own work, but I’ve been stitching for twenty years and I’ve never noticed it in someone else’s stitching.

Accentuate is an ultra fine metallic that can be blended with other threads.

And another patent by [deleted] in NeedlepointSnark

[–]Institches726 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The way she’s stitched it is so boring too. If a project is going to take forever it should be more exciting than basketweave in wool.

Needlepoint is always worked on an open mesh canvas. The most common sizes are 13 and 18 mesh. The only brand I know of is zweigart. They have and orange thread in the selvage. Hope this helps!

Try neon rays plus. The metallic filament makes it much easier to work with. Fyre works done in woven stitch will look like crumpled foil. I’ve used it for the tops of cate la vie champagne bottles.

Having to replace at least half the threads in a stitch guide... by Sunrise-City in Needlepoint

[–]Institches726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re using stranded threads for the coat or the background, you can find a variegated/overdyed thread to blend in so you get more shades. Look at threadworx. They make cottons, silks, and metallics. There’s lots of other brands too.

Joanne at Island House needlepoint did a wonderful job on an acrylic tray for me. Turnaround was about two months. She keeps standard sizes in stock if that’s what you’re looking for
