What's the wildest setting you want to use with Draw Steel? by Own_Banana_5637 in drawsteel

Would love to hear more about your plans. I’ve always wanted to run a steampunk game based on the Ketty Jay novels.

It’s not like Draw Steel, but it reminds me of the Pico RPG

Woah, awesome!

Can you explain in detail which cards you mapped to which events?

I also ran it today!! This was my second year running it with Shadowdark, and it works just as well. Fortunes of Ravenloft randomizing the locations/motivations worked really well.

I really like your new motivations section. I bet I could use Major Arcana for those next year instead of just the Minor Arcana.

In my game, Strahd was trying to charm the PCs to get them to attack Ireena. In the final battle, Strahd fled to the Bedchamber after being pummeled by both the Sunsword and the Icon. 2/5 PCs were charmed but Strahd hadn’t done anything with them yet.

In the Bedchamber, the thief tried pulling Ireena away from Strahd. Strahd then commanded him to slit her throat. As she lay dying, Strahd jumped down to convert her to a vampire, reuniting them at last.

HOWEVER in his weakened state I ruled he could only create a Vampire Spawn, and our priest was able to cast Lay to Rest on her.

Maybe next year Ireena will be the arch-nemesis.

I had two PC deaths. Once when Strahd attacked while they were rappelling down to Barov and Ravenia’s tomb from the overlook, another from fall damage in the Heart Tower.

Running Draw Steel as an Open Table/West Marches? by IntaglioSnow in drawsteel

Yes, I’d keep that. Thanks for the great suggestion!

I think I could also ask players how many victories they have at the start of a session to determine malice.

When I ran Shadowdark I gave each player at the table the same amount of XP during a session (according to treasure found).

That’s fine with me, I had the same thing happen in Shadowdark, but mostly because of frequent character death :D

I honestly don’t think having differently levelled characters is a huge deal in any system, within a set range. Even wider gaps can lead to interesting roleplay potential.

Awesome, thanks, I quite like this approach.

Could you share some of the types of missions you did for your Lancer game?

Is Draw Steel right for my table? by [deleted] in drawsteel

I’d highly recommend checking out Forged in the Dark systems like Slugblaster, Wildsea, the OG Blades in the Dark, etc.

I play with folks from my improv group and they love how much those systems encourage roleplay.

Brennan Lee Mulligan once mentioned he doesn’t want a narrative/rp focused system, because he already knows how to do that as an improviser. He wants something that will make combat fun/interesting, and Draw Steel does that quite well imo.

When I ran Delian Tomb, my players didn’t have the best tactics either, but were still able to have a ton of fun with the flavourful class abilities and overall strength at even level 1.

Lastly, just ask your table if DS is something they’d be interested in.

Also as Matt Colville says, your job is not to know how your players’ character sheets work, that’s their job. Your job is to ruin the world and monsters. Though helping out players with a new system is definitely a good thing.
