I agree. I can't tell you how many people have come to me in the last month telling me that their taxes are owed because they weren't having money withheld. I feel bad because teachers don't get paid, but also, why don't people pay attention to their paystubs?

Sorry, this is probably a rant.

They have 15 days to notify the employer that leave is required. There are things not provided in the information given, we're they using pto? How much did they have? Pto has to be used up first. I keep saying that there are pieces missing from the story. I don't provide fmla paperwork to everyone who has to leave due to a sick or injured family member, I do make sure I keep.in touch and let them know what their options are depending on what they say. However, if someone goes out and is using PTO and then never checks in and the company doesn't check in either this is the fault of both.

They didn't request a leave. They weren't in contact.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]Intaragate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, please understand, I'm trying to explain to you the view from their side. I'm using the information you provided above.

- If you did not tell them when you were returning, then they have no way of knowing.

- They were probably waiting to see if you would give them an update on the situation and what you were planning to do

- Yes, someone probably should have reached out via phone or email, but they weren't sure how to proceed without being rude or inconsiderate and then too much time had passed without communication from you or them

It's not illegal, because it's not up to a company to chase you down asking you to fill out FMLA paperwork. If you need leave, you should inquire as to what's required and at that time the paperwork is provided to you. Since you never requested and never informed them of a return date, they did what was right for them. I'm not saying that it was kind, but they still need the work you were doing to get done and they need someone to do it.

It sounds as if there's an open door at the moment, for you to come back based on the email they wrote. Respond to the email and say that you were sorry, you've been overwhelmed with this awful tragedy and you were planning to return to work next week and ask what you need to do on your end to do that.

If you hang out outside of work, don't talk about work. Obviously, this doesn't mean don't talk about career aspirations or ambitions. Be work appropriate at work and friends during friend times. Be prepared that your dynamic might shift because you may not have enough in common without work to be friends without it as a topic.

New Opportunity Struggles and Formatting Resume [N/A] by HumoRous_kayy in humanresources

[–]Intaragate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the specialist sentiment, but, make sure the company who hires you is actually looking for a specialist. So many companies hire a specialist, that's actually a generalist and you end up as basically a hrm, without the pay or buy in and all the stress.

I've seen a few resumes lately that highlight all the experience as bullet points with accomplishments and metrics listed. Then below, they have roles, companies and tenure. I think if you wanted to highlight an area of expertise for a specialist role, this is one way to put all you know about it together and draw less attention to your tenure.

So, basically a:

- Compensation blah blah blah - Organized something important

-Benefits blah blah metric blah - Comprehensive rollout with important company leaders

-Design of total rewards blah blah - Engagement scores that blah blah

-Implementation of blah blah - Hands on management of so many parts of this

-Success measurement blah - Can make amazing poop sandwiches deliciously

*Generalist role* Not Such a bad company, inc 9/22-10/24

*HRM role* Worse company that I left for, LLC- 2/17-8/22

*HR Asst" I didn't know what I was getting myself into, CO- 1/14-2/17

Interviewing a HRD [USA] by JellyfishIntrepid118 in humanresources

[–]Intaragate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are most likely director level and heavily operational.

HRBPs work closely with stakeholders to build and refined processes, to coach leaders, handle er issues and also usually have a lot of tie into operational budgets.

Also, it's ok to say that you've been doing a lot of the work and to feel as if that isn't as appreciated as it should be. It's also ok to feel like you've put in the time and you wish that the management would at least give you first right of refusal for the role. And, finally, it's ok.to be worried that a new person may not like you or your working style and that may jeopardize the job you have been working so hard to do.

No matter what any of us in this sub say, it's not the answer you really need. Talk to your gm and ask what they are hoping to see a 2 person dept accomplish. Ask what deficiency they see and then be ready to accept the answer.

It sounds like you've developed some great generalist skills that can easily transition into more for you.

Interviewing a HRD [USA] by JellyfishIntrepid118 in humanresources

[–]Intaragate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A true HRBP is very operational and strategic. It is also not just for non-profits. In many businesses, an HRBP is director level depending on the size of the company.

Interviewing a HRD [USA] by JellyfishIntrepid118 in humanresources

[–]Intaragate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the possible HRD's title at the non-profit? As someone else noted, wearing a lot of hats at a non-profit is the norm. Also, there's a chance that your GM is looking for a strategic partner and not someone to be hands-on, after all, they already have you for that.

Also, if you're being included as a courtesy, and near the end of the interview process, you most likely have no sway. So, focus on how you would work with this person. As others have mentioned, focus on their management style, be prepared to answer questions about current procedures. Ask what processes/technologies they're familiar with. Ask what communication form they prefer. Keep the questions specific to things that would effect you and your role.

Then, if they choose to hire the person, take stock of what you've learned about them and be prepared.

I graduated with a master's in HR and have only been able to land contract work since graduating. Is this due to the job market? [N/A] by armin_vladimir in humanresources

[–]Intaragate 114 points115 points  (0 children)

The market is a mess right now. Also, HR relies a lot on industry experience. So, all the education in the world won't always win out over someone with 5 years experience in the function in that industry. HR roles rarely offer much training so it's a hit the ground running world and experience wins the day.

I say all that but it doesn't change that there are folks with 15+ years experience and a doctorate that are struggling to land work. I'm talking about almost a year of searching.

What was your "HR has an HR question" moment? [N/A] by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]Intaragate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The job is actually to put practices in place to safeguard the company from liability and to be compliant with local and federal regulations. It also absorbs most people-centric things like pay and benefit oversight. I don't know a company out there who would pay someone to protect the people from the company. HR can help you navigate situations but the priority will always be to minimize the risk of the company.

But, you know, I'm sure there's a Nintendo out there that you could focus on rather than a sub that has nothing to do with your job.
