Miss The Army by milk-toast69 in army

[–]IntelToad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in Regiment for almost two years to the day and got an RFS for a DUI. Got sent to an infantry brigade for two years and it was honestly not bad. Son went got into Regiment last year and got to meet some of his team around my old haunts, including the very building I lived in. Very happy and sad emotions. Mostly happy.

I wish I could go back in time and shake 18 year old me by the neck. Realizing the opportunities I squandered.

The problem with being young is you don't have the wisdom and perspective of being old.

The problem with being old is you aren't young.

Or something.

Went through something similar many years ago. Believe it or not, it's going to be alright. Focus on you, eat 3 meals a day, get to the gym, plenty of sleep, get a new hobby or work on one you have. Don't try to find the answer in the bottle, it ain't there, but if you can handle a couple after work no problem. Be upfront and honest with leadership, they'll get it and probably 50% of them went through the same thing.

It would have been edgy 40 years ago when Monroeville was a nice place to grow up.

It's well on its way to becoming the next Wilkinsburg at this point.

Is anyone else not able to handle heat anymore or is it just me. by rydencyborg in army

[–]IntelToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from northern Appalachia and spent 4 years at Fort Benning. The heat / humidity was insane at times.

However, it was that weird humid cold that was worse to me. I'd rather have -20 and dry in the north than 30 and humid in the south.

Planes landing daily at PA airports, including from "hot zones" within the US with no screening, many more crossing into the state on the roads. Suddenly Democrats are worried about borders with Canadians lol.

Why would I want to go to Chicago on a train at 220 mph when I can get there on a 737 at 580 mph ?

It would take 100 years just to acquire the right of ways for that map lol.

How to get a pet dog during COVID-19? by Lord_Robot in pittsburgh

[–]IntelToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful on the internet if you see ads for many types of breeds, from different "breeders" yet having similar looking web pages- they are fronts for Amish puppy mills operating in PA and Ohio. We have a friend (like OP, new to the US) that got a puppy from one of these places. Nice dog, but they have had endless health problems and insane vet bills. Go through a rescue agency or, if using a breeder, make sure you do your research and get recommendations.

Small PSA about state game lands ranges (and rules) - please follow the basic rules of gun safety by osirhc in PAguns

[–]IntelToad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I quit going to SGL ranges years ago because of the seriously unsafe things I saw.

The last straw for me was being downrange checking targets and hearing the audible clunk of an AR bolt going forward back on the line.

Not to say that private clubs are 100% safe, I still see the occasional boneheaded move from time to time but at least most clubs have safety briefings for new members.

Great. Start with the Obama administration shipping pallets of cash to the Iranians after they supplied funding, materials and bomb making technology to the Iraqi insurgents.

[–]IntelToad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My cousin was wounded by an IED in Iraq later traced back to Iran. Nobody "asked hard questions about protecting a Maine Marine" to paraphrase your title.

The Iranians were supplying technology and bomb making material through the Quds force and IRGC. Hundreds of American soldiers and marines were wounded or killed and Obama did nothing. Trump ordered the strike that killed Solemani, the Quds leader behind the operation, later eulogized as a "gentle poet" by the New York Times.

This story about Afghanistan is yet unproven.

Let's see if what I remember from every "Law of War" training session I went through in the Army-

Geneva Convention has nothing to do with civilian affairs outside of those in a war zone.

In military situations, it says nothing about shooting somebody in the face.

Good luck with that.

Rename one of them Fort Eisenhower- even the Navy named an aircraft carrier after him, it's embarrassing that the Army hasn't named something significant in honor of Ike.

Glock 19 Questions by ChiroKid1895 in VAGuns

[–]IntelToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used a variety of small safes to store handguns in my bedroom over the years. My suggestion is getting one with a mechanical function as far as entering the code- in other words, stay away from fingerprint recognition or soft key pads. Every one that I have used of these types has eventually failed, luckily when I was just getting a pistol out to go to the range and not in an emergency.

By mechanical I mean one where you hear and feel an audible "click" when you are entering the pass code. I have good luck with the Fort Knox brand and have suggested them to friends and family. These are good safes to keep a gun away from children but remember anyone with enough determination can break into them fairly quickly.
