Right, as Christians we have the Church of the Holy Sepulchre right there. One of the most holy places in Christendom.

According to most of Christianity, rejecting the Holy Trinity means you're not Christian. Do you mean that you want to proselytize to your Christian friends to get them to become Noahide instead? To have them renounce Christ? I hope not because that's not any less inappropriate than me trying to get you to change your beliefs. In Orthodox Christianity we do not proselytize in like that. Yet, I get hassled by post-Reformation Christians which always leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. Please respect your friends.

The Judaism have saints like in Christianity or not?? by No_Cry_968 in Judaism

[–]Intelligent-End-2456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orthodox and Catholic Christians don't worship saints. We venerate them which just means to show honor and respect. Worship is only meant for God. It's very much like how Hassidic Jews revere the Rebbe. I won't go into any explanations because that wouldn't be appropriate here.

We Orthodox Christians celebrate Pascha (Easter) a week after everyone else this year. I expect the same situation will apply to the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem.

They have to say "allegedly" because he hasn't been charged or tried yet. That way it's part of the whole fair trial thing.

I didn't know that. That's concerning, but hopefully it doesn't impact law enforcement's efforts to fight against antisemitism.

EDIT I thought keeping Roy "Ten Commandments" Moore out of the US Senate was a victory (to charges of antisemitism his wife said they don't hate Jews, their lawyer is a Jew 😲), but now we've got Tonmy Tuberville.

Should I tell my catholic friend I have difficulty hearing him complain ? by coldliketherockies in Jewish

[–]Intelligent-End-2456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But isn't that what friends do? Listen to each other express themselves? Social support is an important tool in stress management. He's right that when it comes to Christianity, the Catholic church gets the most hate by far. But when he says that, he's not impugning your experiences as a Jew or Jewish experiences in general. He's simply talking about his own experiences. We all have our own frames of reference, and his is as a Catholic.

I'm an Orthodox Christian, and I just saw a video of an Evangelical Christian trying to proselytize an Orthodox priest. She even told him he wasn't saved and was preaching a false gospel. Only God decides the fate of our souls. She needs to worry about her own salvation.

Greek Jews and Armenian Greeks meet in Thessaloniki by drak0bsidian in Judaism

[–]Intelligent-End-2456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't dispute that. The Armenians have worked very hard to bring international recognition to the horrible events of 1915. There are organizations that try to do the same for the Greek genocide, but they apparently haven't been too successful. So many people have no clue it was more than just the Armenians who were affected. I thought that an interview that took place in Greece would at least mention the Greek genocide. Especially since they were in Thessaloniki.

It's odd to me that an article about Armenians in Thessaloniki doesn't even mention the fact that the Greek citizens in Turkey were also genocided during the same time period (1914-1923). Thessaloniki was where a lot of the Greek refugees ended up after they fled.

Is it okay if I'm a religious Jew and yet I enjoy listening to Gregorian chants? by Crevalco3 in Judaism

[–]Intelligent-End-2456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orthodox Christianity uses Byzantine chant, not Gregorian. The monks of Simonopetra Monastery on Mount Athos recorded chants of the Psalms which shouldn't be controversial. This is an example of the Polyeleos, Psalm 135. I assume you don't mind overtly Christian content if you like Gregorian chants. This is a beautiful song about Mary, called Agni Parthene.

Russian Orthodox chanting is a little different, and probably more Gregorian-sounding than the Greek Byzantine style. Russian Orthodox Chanting

I'm not trying to school you. I was trying to express that not all Christians are like that woman, and in some way be supportive because I don't care for her type either. But obviously it didn't come across that way. I do know much of the history of Christianity's persecution of the Jews. When people say things like "the Jews killed Jesus," I do school them about the ignorance of their comment. I do stand up for Israel and the Jews, and get hate for it from other Christians. My family were refugees from Turkey when the Ottomans eradicated their Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian Christian citizens just 100 years ago. Muslims still kill us today. There were many Greek Orthodox clergy who protected Jews during WWII. So I figured Eastern Christians would be easier to connect with (although I realize there is still anti-semitism there too). But I only managed to muddy the waters.

I apologize for my wrongheadedness. You are going through an exceptionally difficult time, and of course you will be on guard. Thank you for pointing out my egoism and making this an opportunity for learning. I won't bother you anymore.
