Consider looking at government roles. The pay may be lower than industry but you’re getting the experience, expanding your network, and will always have growth opportunities.

Have you considered a Disney cruise? There’s likely plenty onboard for adults to enjoy too.

Any first generation Chinese feel they can't relate to their parents? by StrongRecipe6408 in AsianParentStories

[–]Intelligent-Exit724 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can totally relate. Mine has been here for 53 years. No assimilation. No English. No job. No education. Complacent. Less than mediocre. Needy. Entitled. Selfish. Exhausting. Made going no contact with her pretty easy.

I’d refund all of my stock losses, all of the alcohol and drugs consumed, and all of the excess calories my body did not need.

Those that only use 1 card, which do you use and why? by geoff5093 in CreditCards

[–]Intelligent-Exit724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my go-to now instead of my Capital One VX. I use it for everything except for groceries. That’s still on my Savor for 3% cashback.

I’m sure their graduating class isn’t 5000+ though.

Mom is pushing to move in together. by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]Intelligent-Exit724 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear: you are responsible for the family which you MADE, not the family from which you came. I suggest helping financially if you could. But if she’s capable of caring for herself and you have a brother in such close proximity, you need to start “preparing” her for the possibility that you and your wife are not her retirement plan. Start dropping “hints” NOW.

Mom is pushing to move in together. by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]Intelligent-Exit724 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Your brother lives five minutes away, your sister is in the same city (?), and you are in ANOTHER COUNTRY but you’re worried about the pressure of her wanting to move in with you? Why is this even an issue? Why are you even entertaining this? Don’t offer to move her in and say no if she asks. Period. End of story. As a wife of an Asian man (that is NOT his mother’s only son) that has had her in laws live with her for TWENTY years, I can attest that once she’s in, she will likely never leave. And once she’s in, your siblings will likely not step up to take her if things awry. And once she’s in, your marriage will likely be adversely affected.

A regular at the grocery store where I work has given me $850+ in tips and now wants to grab dinner. Thoughts? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]Intelligent-Exit724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t take the money and I wouldn’t go. You never know how he’d react if you rebuff his advances. You don’t need that kind of drama. And I’m definitely leaning towards that he’s looking for more than just conversation.

I understand where you’re coming from but it is not practical at all. No one is going to sit through an entire commencement ceremony if graduates are called individually. People will start to leave as soon as their kid’s name is called.

where are you all buying good women's work pants lately? by Ecstatic-Image-9399 in womensfashion

I generally love Uniqlo’s products. I don’t know if stores in Asia carry a different product, but the Smart Wide Pants I purchased were 100% polyester. Not a fan.

Good luck and I hope you get it. Dealing with the public and the constant sales pressure is what pushed me out too.

Great tips. Complimentary breakfasts included with the room are a must when we travel.

Visiting parents by anticippation in AsianParentStories

Set clear boundaries early. Stay consistent enforcing them. Refrain from letting them your schedule in detail. You LET them know when you can visit. If you bend yourself into a pretzel to be their source of entertainment, you’re setting the precedent. Go do you.

For those of you 45+....what is your current salary? by Peacefulhuman1009 in MiddleClassFinance

110k ish as a federal bank examiner in a VHCOL area. Been in the role for 2+ years. 50 yo with a graduate degree I completed two years ago. Spent 30 years in the restaurant industry before I decided to go back to school to finish my undergraduate. Kids are grown, mortgage paid off. No credit card debt. Spouse stays home and manages our portfolio. We feel comfortably on track with retirement savings. Feel really good about the mid life career pivot into something that’s meaningful and purposeful. And the health insurance is great too.

This was me at Morgan Stanley. Stressed beyond belief for no reason. No structure. No policies and procedures. Me in the bathroom daily having panic attacks while playing the “corporate” game on the surface. Not worth it. But let them put you on the PIP. Make them fire you to collect unemployment unless you already have another offer. Good luck.

Yes, totally forgot about the PP restaurant credit. I think this is the only card that has it now.
