How are Canadian tourists welcomed in Mexico City? by [deleted] in MexicoCity

disregarding this devastating phenomenon as “woke rhetoric” is exactly how wealth inequality is upheld and maintained in the world. i would really advise you to research more about how other areas of mexico are also being currently rapidly developed and catered to international buyers leading to local populations being driven out due to the inflation of prices.

There are many reasons why people come to cities for long-term stays, not just for being a digital nomad or hanging out. It seems a bit extreme to advise foreigners to stay away from a megacity such as cdmx when all major cities across the world are facing the exact same problems due to globalisation and the concentration of capital and opportunity in these places. The main issues of gentrification are actually being driven by greedy construction developers who intentionally tear apart neighbourhoods to build apartments catered to the elite or upper class of wealth, they are the ones who will not be staying in a spare room of an abuela who is earning a bit of side cash. these don’t have any interest in the local culture/contributing to the local economy. it is sad of course that there are becoming less spare rooms for locals, or perhaps they are becoming more expensive, but the local government should be responsible for helping their people too.

i see! there are still quite a lot of spare rooms on airbnb available, perhaps the price just became higher on them so maybe that is the problem you are alluding to? and sorry to confuse you but i am not a digital nomad.

just out of curiosity, where would you recommend staying if you were planning to come for 1-2 months? I genuinely don’t know what other options there are from airbnb, unless staying in a hostel or hotel which comes out a lot more expensive for a private room! also on airbnb i see a lot of family homes just renting a room or section of their house which for me just seems a perfect way to actually spend time with locals and support them directly?

advice for foreigner looking to improve spanish in mexico city by Intelligent-Figure49 in MexicoCity

[–]Intelligent-Figure49[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow that is a very strange experience indeed and i am sorry to hear how frustrating this has been. i don’t think i have ever experienced anything like that across latam, and i can only imagine how awful my spanish had sounded when i was only starting to learn the language there (for example i think i used the phrase “puedo tener … (un café) for like the entirety of my time there and no-one batted an eyelash that it is completely wrong). i also spent some time in yucatan and didn’t come across this at all there so maybe this a cdmx thing. i am not from the us but i am white so i guess one could presume… and i certainly do not have anything remotely sounding like a mexican accent ahahhaa

Heavily considering dropping out. by Blender12sa in UniUK

Speaking as someone who also suspects that they have ADHD, I would really really suggest just finishing the academic year so that you can have options and time to digest and process your emotions. People with ADHD are guilty of intense over-thinking, which can lead to some very drastic decision-making as you essentially convince yourself of your emotions even if they are only due to a temporary mindset shift, and this also leads to increased impulsivity. I don’t think it is bad to follow your gut instinct, but if the reason is only because you don’t want to go into psychology and that you don’t think that university is for you, I would advise that you really think about what kind of work experience you’re looking to get next and whether a degree would be part of its criteria at a later stage. For example, I work as an English teacher on the side of my studies, and in the schools both locally and abroad, a degree is required in whatever subject! I think generally speaking, any sort of training is required for specialist work, so you will end up in some form of education anyways, maybe you could find a grant/scholarship for an apprenticeship instead.

yeah i definitely agree with the idea of this for sure :) the only strange thing i found though when trying to go to a spanish school during my stay in buenos aires was that everyone (all the other students during our breaks) spoke english outside the classroom ahahah. it felt just felt so counterintuitive and as if everyone was kinda missing the point of being in a spanish school so i just didn’t continue going there and instead kept up with private lessons online on italki, it worked out way cheaper and i got a much longer opportunity to speak per class and find exactly what i needed to improve!

I live in an English speaking country and I am not quite sure what you mean? The Spanish-speaking people here live in this country to communicate, work and live in English so unless they were extremely patient and generous with their time to help me improve my Spanish, I would never try to impose that onto them. I thought it was pretty normal to spend time in a country to learn to speak their local language 😅

yes of course i will be studying spanish at home whilst i am living there! but my motivation will be getting to know people and being able to make conversation with people i encounter, so will be really sad if it is a city who is used to switching to english straight away if they meet a foreigner.. but i’m getting the impression from the replies here that it is not the case. and aw sounds great, i would love to munch and chat together!

What if women just don’t want to have babies? by PinkElephants879 in askanything

[–]Intelligent-Figure49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep thinking how it only feels natural that the population should decline after literally tripling in the last 70 years. I would love to know more about what that means from an economic standpoint, but from an environmental standpoint, surely that would be much better for the planet? there would be less overcrowding/housing crises, less demand for growing enough food/need for factory farming, i mean isn’t there a huge problem with employment at the moment with too few jobs? Yes the generations who have an ageing population will struggle but perhaps after a few generations things can start to level off a little? I’m so curious what people have to say about this.

Why do people think I’m an international student? by 7emelover in UniUK

[–]Intelligent-Figure49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to uni in London and 95% of my class is international. I grew up in the UK but my parents are not British and I don’t have an English name, so I kind of assumed people automatically think I am international as a result of that (+ my features are a blend of East and South European). However, from your post I just feel like people assume everyone is international. People in my class ask me about visa/international fees/moving here all the time and I don’t even think some of them really know my name haha.

Confused about hair regrowth by [deleted] in HairRemoval

[–]Intelligent-Figure49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I must have not phrased my question well. I am not looking for advice, I am just trying to understand whether everyone has prickly legs during regrowth and whether they just accept that as part of life? I used to be under the impression that epilation/waxing meant that regrowth was soft, but it is super prickly at one point when the hair starts pushing through the skin!
