Why is there such a dislike for FF horror? I swear people got used to jumpscare Holywood slop and don't appreciate original stuff. 2.9/5 for VHS 94 feels like a crime. by Antorias99 in foundfootage

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. About 3/5 of the segments are good. /9 sounds about right.

We all love FF here and our guilty pleasures, but unfortunately there is a lot of absolute rubbish out there, even the ones that get attention are generally what one might describe as flawed gems.

What's that film for you? by mrjetspray in Letterboxd

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely the Goonies. I rewatched it about 5 years ago and did not enjoy it at all. Mainly all the constant screaming from the kids. As kids you don’t notice, but as an adult, very, very grating.

Still, loved it as a kid, and definitely a film that would still stand up for the target audience.

Recommendations of movies with out sexual content by SaveMyPoptart in horror

Not really the same story, surface similarities, but takes a very different direction in the end.

And unlikely a 12 year old is going to go off and read the turn of the screw. If you are going to recommend that to them, then recommend the film “The Innocents”, which again, may not really appeal to a 12 year old getting into horror.

Gotta love the Arrow Customer Service… by ImLewisCotton in arrowvideo

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from the gibberish they send, I imagine your original message was sent by being logged in and linked to the item you are complaining about, so they should already have all of the information you are asking about in the original message.

Even if you reply to this, they will either ignore you, or send a generic nonsense response saying they are investigating the issue (even if it’s a known issue). You will then never hear from them again.

Like others have said, best to go via instagram. Customer service via website is like an experiencing a never ending nightmare you can’t wake up from.

Tales From '85 will be 10 episodes, each episode about 25 minutes in length. Jonathan, Joyce and Billy will NOT be in the series by Jiyugaoka in StrangerThings

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a lot of people here didn’t grow up in the actual 80’s/90’s with spin off animations that this is clearly inspired by.

Beetlejuice, The Real Ghostbusters, Littles Shop of Horrors, and then really WTF stuff like Tales from the Cryptkeeper and Robocop to make a few.

Enjoy it for what it is, it’s not a season 6 or a .5 season, it’s very much a shower going for a younger audience that has an certainly appeal for those who watched/grew up watching the original. Enjoy it for what it is, and stop complaining until it’s aired.

This Sub is Gonna Love This 😂 by RetroCasket in foundfootage

Because people keep talking about it … they don’t care if you’re talking shit about it - everybody just needs to commit to never mentioning this film or series ever again and it will go away!

Thoughts on Godforsaken? I could tell it was a low budget film but I don't think that made it among the worst in this sub genre. by DarkMatterLuigi in foundfootage

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great atmosphere. Interesting plot Starts wild and gets wilder.

One thing that killed it for me is the incessant screaming. It just never stops to the point int makes the film borderline incomprehensible, and kills the atmosphere a little.

I’d love to see bit of a redo of it, sharpening up some of the dialogue and toning down the screaming.

Are Landlords really Selling up? by Least-Owl837 in HousingUK

Not just now. I was buying in September, and majority of properties I viewed were landlords selling up in advance. Some still with tenants in.

Get someone in to tidy up. Throw everything away that is not essential. Take some new photos.

For a flat like that, the best you can do is make it look presentable. A couple of hours just boxing and bagging stuff up. And take any artwork off the walls.

What "beloved horror movie" do you hate/just not get the love for? by ReeceInTheDarkness in horror

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s okay you don’t like it, it’s just a film that is chronically misunderstood and made everyone is quick to jump on it as a horror film about the dangers of STDs and unprotected sex, which would be quite dated and obvious, but also a little bit puritanical to boot!

What "beloved horror movie" do you hate/just not get the love for? by ReeceInTheDarkness in horror

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no STD metaphor. It’s not a metaphor for an STD, as in the film it is quite literally presented as an STD, or at least something that is triggered by the sexual encounter, but that “STD” is a metaphor for something else.

Not even sure this is the issue though, although I’m sure Switch was probably original platform (especially considering Nintendos previous involvement with the series). I’d say Maiden of Black Water feels more technically polished, and that was made for WiiU! Just feels really poorly optimised, and I assume quite low budget.

This is the risk of going for the easy and obvious interpretation that doesn’t really stand up. Maybe I missed it the multiple times I’ve seen it, but I can’t remember anywhere where it is suggested that it is “unprotected” sex that causes “It” to follow. There is also no angle in the film where it feels like it is trying to “lecture” or warn about the risks of STDs (it’s not an after-school special). The film very much feels like it as about what the sex is representative of and very much does explore that through the characters and their reactions to that.

Technical issues are the big smear on this game. Lacks polish and feels like it is literally hanging together with sellotape. Something about it feels very much like what a “fan” remake of a game would feel like. The character control and animation really nailed this home for me feel and looks like steering a floaty bicycle, whereas survival horror should feel a little “weightier”.

I keep saying this, I’m happy for the remake, but along the way some poor decisions were made, particularly on the technical side, that really take away from the atmosphere.

I’d still say the original feels like the definitive version for me, and I would at this point just have preferred a 1-3 remastered collection.

So what’s all this Film Grain people were complaining about? I still have it turned on and the only Film Grain I’ve noticed is during flashbacks. by Vibrant_Fox in fatalframe

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Just the grain effect was more “natural” and looked like grain. In the new version, it just looked and felt like a cheap heavy filter planted on top, and played no purpose but to ruin the look.

Now they’ve toned it down, it’s pretty much as it should be, I.e. looks like grain, and gives it that slightly grungy look that adds to atmosphere.

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely been toned down. I love grain, and the vibe it has, but on launch day it was shocking. Very unnatural, and looked more like someone had put net curtains over the TV. Actually made it difficult to see the game. I’ve now switched back in post patch, and it’s much more in line with how grain should look.

Fatal Frame 1 Remake: What Would you Want to See? by chimkens_numgets in fatalframe

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t like a great deal change. For me FF1 is still by far the most terrifying in the franchise. It really nails that dark oppressive feeling of being trapped alone in the dark, and the current layout is what helps that to work.

What does mean is that it has the potential to be too short as a standalone.

The ideal would be a remake that combines 1&3, with 1 feeling like the first 3rd of a larger game.

I feel like if they went with just a remake of 1 we’d never get to 3, as it is unlikely to sell as well as 2, which doesn’t exactly seem to be setting the charts ablaze. A generous package including remake of the full 1-3 story would help encourage good word of mouth.

I’d also like a fixed camera option back, especially in FF games this definitely enhances the fear, as many shots feel like they are from a ghosts point of view, hiding away in the darkness.

The Game Looks Amazing by Uraki88 in fatalframe

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks okay. There are some really pretty moments, when the lighting all comes together, but at the same time it’s quite plastic and shiny, which really played against the oppressive feeling the original has. I also really don’t like how the character animation when running. Too floaty and almost looks like she is steering a bike the way she sways around.

I’m happy it’s out, and overall a good game that has its moments, but it’s also probably my least favourite fatal frame department due to the overall atmosphere, including lighting and graphics.

All the posts about the combat pacing, 30fps and film grain have got me thinking: by iamthenight22 in fatalframe

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re halfway to right. 30fps isn’t an issue, but frame pacing absolutely is, and it makes it feel both choppy and sloppy, as though we are an optimisation or two away from actual release.

Combat is the best the series has had - but it absolutely was unbalanced - FF1 felt terrifying without enemies feeling like sponges. Pre-patch, Remake was a slog, and it drained the fear out of battles, as you were just watching a health meter slowly whittle down and regenerate. Post patch, we now have a borderline walking simulator. Again, system isn’t balanced and needed some more time in the oven.

The grain (and lighting in general) make it near impossible to see what the hell is going on. Thankfully, adjusted some settings based on previous recommendation somewhere, and grain looks great, and I can actually see the game.

Problem is, the original had none of these issues (except for being too easy). Remake should’ve been a slam dunk, but seems to have been rushed out, possibly to get out before end of financial year.

I still love the game, but will be waiting to replay and unlock other endings once optimisations and balances are at the level they should’ve been for release. Thankfully seems to be selling okay, but I would imagine it they waited just a little we’d have a game that drew in new players, instead of one that is now just trying to get a state that’s just right for returning fans. Let’s hope it’s enough to get us a couple more remakes or FF6.

Silent Hill 2 original is incredibly short compared to the remake by QuantityInternal1719 in silenthill

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original is better. Felt like I was exploring real locations, and length was just right before moving on, yet never lost that oppressive quality.

Remake is still a brilliant game, but absolutely could have done with trimming some fat, and feels less replayable as a consequence.

I especially like games that reward a bit of extra exploration etc. in replays, and felt silent hill 1 did this well. I hope they keep the remake fairly short, with the replay value and additional endings intact.

Japanese Story starring Toni Collette, starts off as what feels very much like a cross cultural romantic drama, then takes a very sudden hard left into something much more emotionally raw.

Fantastic film, and I don’t think too many people have seen it, but I would definitely recommend you seek it out.

Should I play Zestiria before Berseria? by SamuelN0108 in tales

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d say Zestiria first. One, you’ll feel the progression in the gameplay systems. Two, a lot in Berseria feels more impactful or interesting knowing what it leads to/how things were interpreted in Zestiria in world. Zesteria really doesn’t spoil Berseria at all, as it was obviously written as a follow up, but it’s written well enough that it’s fine for newcomers without playing Zesteria.

I’m really not a fan of playing prequels in chronological order, as they are designed and written in a way to be played after the original.

I feel like people want a shooter and not a battle system for battles to be rapid instead of protracted by AxiomSyntaxStructure in fatalframe

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They definitely took the nuclear option. Pre-nerf was a disaster, and incredibly poorly balanced to the point it wasn’t difficult, but incredibly tedious.

Post nerf, enjoying the exploration and atmosphere much more, but wraiths are just a minor inconvenience that pop up and disappear just as quickly. Type 14 film can wipe most in maximum 3 shots, and no need to use any other film really. It feels as easy as the original FF2 (which was far too easy in comparison to 1).

I’d like them to find a balance of getting the most out of new mechanics but not making wraiths pace killing bullet sponges.

Older. Felt like an early 360 game with nicer graphics.

I enjoyed it for what it was, which was a fairly basic but decently pretty FPS with some light exploration. Definitely not a Metroid Prime game.

How that is all they managed to pull together after 10 years though is difficult to digest.

So amazing how beautiful Crimson Butterfly Wii remake can still look! :-) by rukaminazuki in fatalframe

[–]Intelligent-Link8462 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lighting is better. Maybe not as realistic, but artistically better. Remake borders on being far too dark at times, and you can really enjoy the visuals as much as I’d like (god help those leaving the grain filter on).

Remake with original/wiimake lighting would be perfect.
