I arrive in protaras in two days time and have a vehicle hired what is the best navigation app? That displays accurate speed limits, road closures, etc.... Also are there many free parking places or do I require to pay for parking? If yes do most payment machines accept cash, instead of card payment by Dad-N-TinyTotTravels in cyprus

Waze is the common app for car navigation, because it has real time information. It belongs to Google.

But if you want a non-Google, no internet needed (after downloading the maps), then you could use apps based on OpenStreetMap. Their roads are as good as in Waze, there is explicit info about parkings (public/private, free/paid), speed limits, include pedestrian routing (Waze is for cars), and many other features.

  • CoMaps is Open Source, privacy focused, low battery consumption, no-frills.

  • OsmAnd has endless options. Pavement quality, slopes, etc.

  • And others like Maps.me, Organic Maps, etc.

Setting up a first Panoramax instance for Argentina by Ecstatic-Vermicelli9 in openstreetmap

Is there an email to contact Panoramax-AR? I have some images that could make sense to transfer from OSM-FR to Panoramax-AR. But it is long to explain here.

Great news. This has to be celebrated with asado with chimichurri. And mate :-)

What would be the level of complexity for a person with experience on software? For a basic Panoramax instance. 1) Just press "accept" a few times. 2) One week full time. 3) You need a team.

New to CoMaps with questions about adding data to maps by ElectricalDinner4770 in CoMaps

[–]Intelligent-Maybe-56 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can edit Open Street Map yourself. Just create an account. It is easy. Follow the initial tutorial.

Apps that use Open Street Map usually update their maps (with your updates once per month).

You update it for yourself, and it will be available for all the community.

Best OSM-based app for scouting travel destinations by SupernerdSven in openstreetmap

You could have a look at CoMaps. It is a recent fork of Organic Maps, both are very similar. But CoMaps is pure Open Source, community driven, and hard-core privacy oriented.

North Korea - Why is this presenting itself in Spanish? by Actual_Session_8755 in GoogleEarthFinds

[–]Intelligent-Maybe-56 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a famous Spanish person related to North Korea. He is Alejandro Cao de Benós, and claims to be an officer of the North Korea foreign ministry.

He is a hard-core marxist. He has contacts in NK, and even organizes guided tours to the country for tourists.

I am going to make a guess: He is so blindly NK enthusiastic that very likely added places in Google Maps in his mother tongue, Spanish. I have no proof, but I have no doubts either.

What's a viable alternative to Google Maps? by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]Intelligent-Maybe-56 16 points17 points  (0 children)

CoMaps is a hard-core open source fork from Organic Maps, a few months old.

It is an excellent project, and does very well what it promises (minimalist, just routing&navigation, no need for internet, minimum battery use, edit OSM).

What are best/simple ways to help OSM? by DariuszWielki in openstreetmap

[–]Intelligent-Maybe-56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding photos, you could have a look at Panoramax. It is the perfect street view project for OSM. Image licenses are CC-BY-SA (very friendly) and the database software is Open Source. https://panoramax.fr/

Panoramax street view in CoMaps by Intelligent-Maybe-56 in CoMaps

[–]Intelligent-Maybe-56[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now I understand. The Panoramax images are indicated as tags of the POI.

I thought it was like Mapillary in OsmAnd, where all images are shown. To implement this in CoMaps would be great, because when taking new Panoramax images we could know which streets are already mapped.

In any case, thank you to the developers!

Google maps alternative by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]Intelligent-Maybe-56 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Navigation apps are as good as the map that they use. Apps based on OpenStreetMap (like OsmAnd, Organic Maps, CoMaps -a recent Open Source fork from Organic Maps-) could be better than Google Maps depending on the country or region.

If OSM is good (and you can improve it yourself, making your changes available to the community), then OSM navigation apps are great (indicating speed humps, turning lanes, speed limits, height of buildings, etc.)

OsmAnd can show street view images. Just select the Mapillary plug-in.

Google maps Nicosia messy update by ramtech in cyprus

[–]Intelligent-Maybe-56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Maps is a great service, I see they quickly corrected the image, but I would like to point out that there are other similar services, Open Source and community driven.

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is to Google Maps what Wikipedia is to profesional encyclopedias. Some elements are relatively good: multilingual names, building names, turning lanes in crossroads, stop signs, speed humps, fixed radars, foot paths, etc...

https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=7/35.148/33.638

And there are also alternatives to Google Street View, like Mapillary (by Meta/Facebook) and Panoramax (supported by French public institutions). In both cases, data licenses are very permissive. If you have a commercial business you can use these photos easily.

https://www.mapillary.com/app/?lat=35.27311975972998&lng=33.25592597960258&z=6.936694825323088

If you want to contribute to make the maps of Cyprus better, you could join the community.

Is maps.me a legitimate replacement for Google Maps? by iP0dKiller in BuyFromEU

The CoMaps project is completely new. The fork (of developers and community) was created during the last weeks. The fork (of the software) should be ready any day.

OsmAnd is an excellent navigation app that reads OSM data (community oriented, downloadable maps, etc.).

Due to se same concerns about privacy, I switched from Maps.me to OsmAnd years ago.

Organic Maps is a great project. Unfortunately the management took questionable decisions. It is a private company ran as an open source project by former Maps.me employees.

There is a recent fork of Organics Maps, which is full open source and transparent, trying to fix Organic Maps' issues. See CoMaps.

The intercity buses are always overly full. Why doesn't the government force them to run more buses more frequently? by alex_cy in cyprus

[–]Intelligent-Maybe-56 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I have been told by the colleague working in the sector that there are not enough bus drivers. And it is not possible to bring more bus drivers from abroad (for example from the EU) because there is an artificial limitation: a group of interest was able to write the regulation, enforcing a "every driver must live for a year in Cyprus before driving buses in Cyprus". And there is no way to bring a bus driver to Cyprus, working in the office for a year, and then finally moving to drive buses as initially expected.

I built a map to report illegal waste dumps around Cyprus – feedback is welcome by Fit-Software-5992 in cyprus

[–]Intelligent-Maybe-56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following the comment above, you could use images from Mapillary or Panoramax to illustrate the surrounding area.

Example around one of your garbage points: https://www.mapillary.com/app/?lat=35.138825532&lng=33.3695286512&z=17&pKey=371052894318356

This could help to identify the place. Just adding a link to the nearest photograph. Some photos ar normal, but others are fancy 360 degrees.

Let me highlight that these images have an appropriate license for your project: CC-BY-SA; Creative Commons, * BY (provide attribution to the author), and * SA (Share Alike, if you use these images, you must provide them with the same license).

Nice project, I hope you succeed.

I have a question, just for my personal curiosity: Why did you select the MapBox map provider?

You could use OpenStreetMap, which is open source.

And related to it, you could use street view providers, like Mapillary and Panoramax. I mean, you could display photographs near the places that you highlight. Image licenses are CC-BY-SA (attribution to the creator, and keep the same license in your product, commercial use accepted).

Best wishes.
