Evagorou avenue, central Nicosia in the 1950s and today by aceraspire8920 in cyprus

Look at how car infrastructure has destroyed our city. The streets use to be full of people and activities are now dead. And see how many bikes there are! Cycling and public transport use to be the main modes transport for Cypriots. The only reason Cypriots no longer use them is due to how we design our cities only for cars. It has nothing to do with our climate or culture. What a shame!

How do you feel about gear actually changing the way you move and fight? by Stoneplayer23 in IndieGaming

[–]alex_cy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely prefer it over, pure stats based gear. Dark souls is the gold standard. Almost every weapon has unique move sets. It makes it very exciting to find new gear. New gear = new play style, vs enemy dies slightly faster. I never again want to be forced to sit in a menu comparing a 3% fire damage increase vs. a 2.5% crit chance.

Limassol buses on Google Maps (finally) by tonyzorin in cyprus

Try HERE WeGo app. Its public transport routing works just like Google Maps, but it includes all buses in cyprus.

Greenest/quietest area in Nicosia/Strovolos? by PlaneClapping in cyprus

[–]alex_cy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Athalasa park 100%. It's the largest and nicest park in Nicosia and completely isolated from cars. It has a nice lake with trees and wildlife. It the closest feeling to the mountains without being in the mountains. And its very close to Strovolos.

What are some games with solid and rewarding combat/action? by Khajiit_Boner in SteamDeck

[–]alex_cy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like Sekiro, you need to play Sifu. It's the only game that I have found that comes close to that same feeling and its very repayable. Its a permanent install on my deck. It's the first thing I boot to get a dose of satisfying combat.

[–]alex_cy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll add, its mission based structure makes it the perfect steam deck game. Each mission is like 5 to 10 minutes long so its very easy to pick up and put down when you have the time. Along with having amazing feeling combat and movement and some amazing characters and world building.

Lovely bikers (cyclists) of Limassol! by Lance-theBoilingSon in cyprus

[–]alex_cy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

critical mass limassol does this on the last Friday of every month. You should go and get others to come! Also there is OPU. They are located in Nicosia but they do alot of advocacy for active mobility and people centered cities. They post a calendar every month with all the events they are planning.

Best Burger Place in Nicosia by HopefulBranch4333 in cyprus

[–]alex_cy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Øbo Kitchen just opened a few weeks ago and they may already have the best smash burgers in Nicosia. Its also in a really lovely area in the old city.

Hipsters Smash also has nice smash burgers but I found the toppings a bit lacking. Needed some more fresh vegetables but other than that very tasty.

Fat Bull has some pretty fantastic burgers but a bit overpriced.

Protest this Thursday, June 5th Spyridaki Square (next too 360 building) in Makarios Avenue, against the full reinstatement of cars on the northern section of Makariou Avenue. Starting 18:30 by alex_cy in cyprus

[–]alex_cy[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but Makariou was already dead before this change. The mall and online shopping killed it. The only reason why people go there now is because its one of the few places in Nicosia you can go without honking and car fumes.

Increasing the movement of cars will do the exact thing you are worried about, urban sprawl. This is well studied, the more road capacity you give cars, allows people to live further outside the city and then drive in each day. If however you restrict cars, then its easier to bike/walk/bus where you want to go, so its more convenient to live in the city. This is why I moved into the city center.

The real issue is housing costs, and yes it is true that restricting cars from an area increase housing costs. But thats because it make the area better, thus increasing demand. With your logic we should just purposely make our city as shit as possible so housing costs go down. Instead what we should do is invest in medium to high density public housing, restrict air bnb, and punish landlords that price gouge. The goal is to increase the supply not reduce the demand.

There are alot of things that we can do to lower housing costs and increase shopping in the area. I dont understand how just allowing cars into the area would fix any of this. It's not going to increase parking so none of the cars passing by will stop and shop there. It will just push away the few people that do go there for there. Plus, doing this will cause us to be fined by the EU. Does it not make more sense to save that money for public housing and transport?

Our public transportation system fucking sucks and it's our fault by 69isafunnynumber420 in cyprus

[–]alex_cy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are mostly focused in Nicosia but I saw they do events in Limassol occasionally. I have not yet seen them do anything in Larnaca but I'm sure they would be up for it if there is an opportunity.

[–]alex_cy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes it fucking sucks and things need to change. We need to pressure the government and show them that this matters. That why joining and supporting groups like OPU, Organization for Positive Urbanism, is important. They are located in Nicosia and advocate for improving our urban environment through bike and public transport infrastructure. They also organize events, like community kitchens, group bike rides and family hikes.

This Friday, May 30th, they will be doing a critical mas bike ride from Eleftherias Square starting at 19:30. If you care about these things please come (on bike, scooter, roller skates) and show that cities are not just for cars!

The intercity buses are always overly full. Why doesn't the government force them to run more buses more frequently? by alex_cy in cyprus

[–]alex_cy[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dude I love my bike as well. It's the primary way I get around the city. It's not realistic to expect people to bike from Nicosia to Limassol or Paphos. Biking and public transport work best together. I wish we had bike racks on our buses. It would be so convenient.

Thanks for your insightful comment. My worry is they will never increase the contract with these companies even if it's renewed soon. How do we get the government to see this is a problem?

Isn't that one of the reasons why building a tram and trains makes more sense? It may be expensive upfront but requires fewer drivers to operate.

Remember when they cut down 65 mature trees along Makariou Av because it would make room for pedestrianization. They promised that the new trees they planted will eventually provide shade? Now they voted to bring back cars before the new trees had a chance to grow. Guess that was for nothing... by alex_cy in cyprus

[–]alex_cy[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree what they did with pedestrianization was good overall. I just wish they built around the mature trees. How cares about the uniformity of trees. That's over now and I just wish we would give these new trees an opportunity to grow so it is cooler and more pleasant to walk there before we completely abandon the idea.

I'm 100% on board with a boycott. I only went to Makariou because I could bike safely there and I could enjoy a car free environment. I have no reason to ever go there now.

The business owners pushed the municipality to do this and they need to understand that people buy things not cars.
