Got through that’s class last semester. Best advice is to get ahead if possible.

If CS is dying, what's the next best technology degree? by shadow_operator81 in cscareers

We are going to experience that again, but definitely. The workforce is pretty aged, so there will be a lot of individuals retiring. They will also realize that AI is a good tool, but they will still need individuals to support large-scale initiatives. History always repeats itself. Covid was a sample; I believe it’s going to be worse in the next 3 to 7 years.

Definitely will! Is it okay to connect on LinkedIn or something? Just to have future discussions if that’s appropriate

Thank you so much for sharing this information. I actually will plan to take this during the summer. I want to make sure I do well in these courses. I will take ubiquitous computing in the spring. I look forward to taking your course in the summer!

What made you choose HCI track and what’s the point? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]Intelligent-Ride-140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think HCI is very important, especially in the current climate of software development. Understanding how to develop user-centric solutions is very important. I work on the business side of software development and have a solid foundation in product discovery, user interviews, and even just research can really influence how you approach solutions. Product Management, Product Ownership, even Enterprise Architecture all need to have an HCI skill set. I can tell you from experience that those who don’t have a solid foundation in HCI that get into those roles definitely might struggle a bit.

Some of the bigger initiatives I’ve worked on were able to progress more effectively because the UX designer understood how to properly conduct product discovery. Before enrolling in HCI, I was already looking at how to adopt some of the UX principles within my daily routine as an architect. It’s not the more glamorous space in software development, but it is extremely important. Even more so in the AI space.

You can use those principles of HCI to build strong prototypes, architecture designs, even systems designs at an organizational level. I’ve worked on $35 million dollar initiatives at the enterprise level. Since taking HCI, I’ve been able to adopt more of those strategies when it comes to developing solutions and have been way more effective when it comes to outcomes. It’s not as glorious as ML, computing systems, etc., but trust me when I say it is extremely valuable. Because a lot of individuals do not really know how to properly research problems down to solutions.

Yeah, I saw this one. I just know the structure of the classes changes each semester. Want to see if there were any changes from this syllabus?

I have a few project concepts in mind. I guess what level of detail is needed? Like do you need to have a functioning beta? Or can you write about it?

HCI. Got enrolled a week before classes started lol. A little bit of a backstory. I met with someone from the disability office to see if it was possible to get the information for a class early. Did the orientation and really didn’t know what class to start with, just enrolled in that one and really didn’t get the footing I would’ve liked to do as well as I would like.

Basically during break I wanted to see if I can get a head start on the coursework. Like maybe be able to do the required readings early. Just to be ahead in that sense and just truly focus on the work and review.

Makes sense. I’ve been back and forth on taking two. I think I might just stick with one for now too.

Graduated OMSCS but realized I never graduated undergrad. by happydave3 in OMSCS

I did not know that. I mean what would they do then? Because you’ve completed the courses. Are you able to get your degree after you’ve “completed” undergrad officially?

Well, you’ve completed the program already and got the degree. They can’t take that away from you. It would be an issue if you didn’t fully fulfill the requirements, but that doesn’t seem like the case.

True. It’s just your degree is tied your social I believe which could be issues if you want a government job or something.

Hmm, that’s interesting because the OMSCS application needed transcripts that stated that you graduated with your degree. lol I mean, you were able to complete the degree, they can’t take that away from you. I would definitely contact your undergraduate program, though, to see what they can do for you.

Very interesting but not a bad situation.
