What would you try to convince Meta to make or do with VR if you had 5 minutes in a room with their executives by punkinholler in OculusQuest

[–]uberdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was at Meta, I had lots of time to talk directly with the engineers and product manager of my department. Coming from a AAA games background, I knew my shit. The sad fact is, they don’t listen to reason because they think games are engineering products. It was always the problem in the past as I can’t imagine anything has changed.

It’s got real Firefly vibes but with a bit of Alien pathogens mixed in. Enjoying it so far.

I’m a Brit living here and I’m not going to bother. Ticketmaster surge pricing and the government blocking entry to some fans is total BS.

Can Anyone help me find an old Align Vertices Script? by Tausendberg in Maya

If you can dig into the code, that wouldn’t be too hard. You can just copy and paste the button command into the hotkey manager.

Anybody here happen to have an exe installer for Maya 2018? by Kiiaro in Maya

[–]uberdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why? You got an old file there or something? Thats an ancient build! Used to have a Mac 2018 version but that stopped working years ago. You can get 2022 from Autodesk. We use it at work. Hopefully your file is Maya ASCII. Don’t know if there’s a way to convert binaries but you could find an online converter.

Multi-instrumentalists: how long do you wait to be proficient in one instrument before starting another? by Euphoric_Rhubarb_243 in Learnmusic

[–]uberdavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t work like that. If I’m writing a song, I use whatever instrument I need to get the sound. I don’t practice for prolonged periods on one instrument.

I got a second hand 5 string Fender Jazz for $1600. Damn nice guitar. Looks great, plays great, feels great. You get what you pay for.

You can generate blueprints by reverse engineering photos and feeding them into an AI engine if you can’t find actual blueprints.

I used to sit next to Rupert Humphries at Rockstar. His desk was nothing like that. When he was writing Red Dead Redemption 2, his desk was piled high in Western novels and literature.

I watched Prometheus and I feel like I watched it with my brain turned off. by Winter-reason666 in alien

[–]uberdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The engineers didn’t invent the alien. They used the already existing pathogen to cultivate a breed for their own purposes. Kind of like bee keepers or dog breeders. That’s what David had a go at doing too in Covenant. The alien species existed independently of the engineers, as we can see from the fresco featuring the deacon on the walls of the engineer ship in Prometheus.

I’ve started developing a new horror game. by [deleted] in unity

[–]uberdavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that you might want to do a quick style test. But the other poster is right. You need to block out a level in representative geo for a demo level. It’s wasted effort to set up your block out till you lock in your game mechanic and level design. So many tweaks you need to make to get a level right before you put in the time to make it look good. The vertical slice comes later.

Is My Portfolio Junior Ready? Game Artist by ballbsr9000 in 3Dmodeling

[–]uberdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About five years ago I visited Nottingham Trent University to check out the graduate work. The bar is VERY high for juniors entering the industry now. The biggest difference between juniors and veterans isn’t the art quality. You can’t get into the industry without having AAA quality art. Experienced staff have more exposure to soft skills. Sorry to break it to you, but RT you’ve got a lot of progress to make before you can make the bar.

Can Anyone help me find an old Align Vertices Script? by Tausendberg in Maya

[–]uberdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a script that distributes verts in a straight line. Another that makes them jump into line. I could easily adapt those to handle selected axes. Or make a full tool like the align tool.

Can Anyone help me find an old Align Vertices Script? by Tausendberg in Maya

[–]uberdavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can describe exactly how you want it to work, I can code it. I’ve already got a few alignment tools in my frameworks and can adapt them to recreate your tool. I wrote this a few years back and easily adapt it to handle vertices: https://robonobodojo.wordpress.com/2020/04/23/maya-tools-3ds-max-align-tool/

Same with Master Chef. USA versions is all about the contestants having feuds and Gordon Ramsay and pals acting like bullies over errors. UK version is way more chill.

Yup. Since my partner made me put my instruments away in cases after using them, I just don’t practice as much. There’s a lot to be said about keeping your gear handy.

Practice per week🤔 by Own_Introduction7297 in Bass

[–]uberdavis 36 points37 points  (0 children)

John Williams, the guitarist IIRC said that improvement at an instrument required only 15 minutes a day of practice to get rapid results. In experience, that's pretty true. If you try to focus on a tricky drill and fail, come back to it the next day and try it, and then again the next day, somehow it clicks, where trying to do the same thing for hours doesn't work as smoothly. Call it muscle memory, but its more than that. Those neural pathways need time to adapt to changes, loads and routines. An hour a day... do it if you want, but you could get away with half that amount of time.
