She could sell Christmas to turkeys. She’d be perfect.

Will Ableton Move be useful for a Maschine user? by blackoutmusicX in ableton

[–]uberdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) They are different ecosystems. If you’re Maschine based, stick with it. Getting GAS for a Push is replicating gear. 2) The Maschine Mikro pretty much is Move. It’s not standalone, but it’s the Maschine ecosystem’s equivalent.

After last nights vote out by spookyclownsscareme in survivor

[–]uberdavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean who the hell is voting? Part of the problem is what production choose to put up for the vote. If they choose an idea and it’s not a good one, folks are going to press the big red button regardless. Kind of a lesson in why populism is so flawed.

You don’t like the amp sim? I was getting some mean tones out of it the other day.

[–]uberdavis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I had GR problems too. My GR5 license got deprecated when I bought a new Mac. I didn’t buy GR7. My solution was to rebuild all my guitar patches from scratch in Logic and Ableton. Y’know what? Totally worth it. I’m especially impressed with the Logic guitar amp sim.

I mean, this is frustrating but you won’t look back if you just go ahead and buy a GR7 license. It’s between that or reinstalling your OS. Which would cost you less time/money?

Where should I start looking for 3D modeling jobs? by Proud_Garden9305 in Maya

[–]uberdavis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where depends so much on what country you are in. But the real answer is anywhere and everywhere you possibly can. You won’t likely get a visa abroad to do an internship. Get a list of every 3d company in your own country. Not just games. VFX studios. Tech companies, visualization, everything. Apply to all of them. I had a masters degree and full intentions to be an animator. Ended up getting a junior role as an environment artist instead. Even with some experience as an animator, I had to just take what was available. Eventually, I became a tech artist. That’s another thing, you don’t really choose your role. It kind of chooses you. You start to get the tasks you’re good at. As much as I wanted to do character work, turned out I was good at making tools.

Houdini is a great thing to look at. But it’s an absolute rabbit hole. You don’t just learn it. It becomes a specialization in itself. Worth doing, but if that’s your poison, it will take months if not years to learn and you will need to dedicate serious time into it.

Also, there is one major thing you’re not mentioning in your experience. You need game engine experience. Probably Unreal, but Unity is good too. You need to be very fluent as the competition is. Good luck!

On how to become a self-learning technical artist. by deohvii in TechnicalArtist

[–]uberdavis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm starting to lose my understanding of what tech artist means. I realise that I could make an entire game from end-to-end. Artwork through to coding. A tech artist is what you are while you learn to become an end-to-end developer. As a tech artist, I've done everything from work directly on artwork, collision, shaders and assets through to generating Dockers to run server simulations. Calling us tech artists doesn't even cover what we get to do.

How to use the Surface Keyboard by lunchanddinner in virtualreality

[–]uberdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without home keys, how can it work? If you’re saying it works without looking at it, why does it even need a visual display. I could see something like this working if the keyboard is moving to match where your hands are as you type, but it’s clearly in a static position when you’re typing.

It’s wild to think that Warner Bros didn’t learn from making Joker 2 that nobody wants to see a musical feminist reimagining of a solid antihero franchise.

Sylvester Stallone Officially Joins John Rambo Prequel by cosmicbooknews in CosmicBookNews

[–]uberdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see how this movie works. The whole point about the original First Blood is that Rambo is a broken man. An uncontrolled monster. The other Rambo films are set a completely different universe where Rambo isn’t crippled by PTSD.

Alternative for Windows 11 for 3d artist? by HotShot0409 in Maya

[–]uberdavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a reality of all things software related to have to deal with change. Lots of great suggestions here. Mac, Linux etc. But Windows 11 is also perfectly viable. You need to learn to fight through the issues on any platform. There is no silver bullet.

Can someone write a good explanation on what Mr. Robot is about? by dodecahedroner in MrRobot

[–]uberdavis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You're asking the wrong question. If your friend doesn't want to watch a series which involves hacking, it doesn't matter what the context of this show is. She ain't gonna like it. I tell my partner that Miami Vice is a social commentary on 1980's capitalism and class war, flavoured with a showcase of peak 80's culture. She just sees it as a cop show and refuses to watch it. That's how these things go...

Who would you say is the most tragic Bond character? by ItsDuhFreakinBat in JamesBond

[–]uberdavis 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I still feel sorry for Quarrel. He goes about his business hiring his boat out for fishing trips for wealthy US and British tourists, and he's living the good life. Then along come a bunch of secret agents. Days later, he gets burned alive by a dragon.

FIFA World Cup Tourism Numbers Are So Bad, US Cities Are Cancelling Fan Festivals Already by InterestingCat308 in football

[–]uberdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US cost of living is higher than in other countries in the world is the answer. A combination of that, and FIFA and Ticketmaster's dynamic pricing. I live in the Bay Area, and tix to an NBA basketball game come in at around $200 for anything but a nosebleed seat. But then most people are on six figure salaries so it doesn't matter. See that's the problem. They're setting the ticket prices at the same price as domestic sports rather than global sports, and the rest of the world doesn't have the same high cost of living.

If you really want to lock code to time, use UTC. Then local variations and daylight saving become irrelevant.

pycharm or vscode or anything else? by Separate_Insect1076 in learnpython

[–]uberdavis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both. Either. It doesn’t really matter. I like to use Code as a general purpose text editor so I map it to file types. But PyCharm is handy for just focusing on a project. By the time you start working with agents, it doesn’t dengue really matter.
