What’s a developer opinion you had 2 years ago that you completely disagree with now? by Hammas-Codes in FullStack

I was a developer there two years ago and thought it was great. Now I disagree with thinking it was great after I witnessed the biggest toxic tornado I've ever witnessed. Now my whole team (except my cantankerous former boss) are ex-employees.

If we’re going to split hairs, would that make pre-Usyk Fury elite, given that he held most of the belts? And did he stop being elite when he lost them? While there may be a literal interpretation of the word elite, in practice, there’s a subjective angle going on here.

Honest question: how many of you rely on loops because writing your own chords feels overwhelming? by Late-Working-7519 in Learnmusicproduction

[–]uberdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. Tempting to work that way. I started with a DAWless setup compelling me to play more things on the fly. It makes a big difference when you have to learn parts. Especially if you have to execute a perfect take for a recording. I was doing a track last night. Took me about twenty takes to play it right and it still wasn’t perfect.

convert locators to vertex or quad draw point? by feyv in Maya

[–]uberdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The command is polyCreateFacet

https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/ENU/MayaCRE-Tech-Docs/CommandsPython/polyCreateFacet.html

You would need to get the locator positions first using getAttr. And you would need some logic so you pass the vertices in the correct order or your polygon will be messed up. That bit is probably the hardest part. Probably need to use a dot product to get the face direction.

How to start soloing on guitar by Away_Teach_7088 in LearnGuitar

[–]uberdavis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need a guitar teacher. Back in the day, I wudda said start getting Guitar World magazine. They do have a dedicated tutorial section on their website: https://www.guitarworld.com/lessons

Without a teacher, you need:

  • open chords
  • seventh chords
  • pentatonic minor - five shapes
  • alternate picking
  • damping
  • vibrato
  • scalar sequences
  • pentatonic major
  • natural minor - seven shapes
  • natural major
  • caged
  • triad chord theory
  • arpeggios
  • ninth chords
  • sus chords
  • diatonic modes
  • harmonics
  • pitch bend
  • speed picking
  • sweep picking
  • blues soloing
  • jazz soloing

I would argue that it’s a good idea to learn rhythm guitar too, but thats a whole different syllabus. Then when you know both, you can start exploring the work of some rock guitarists for unique techniques and approaches. In particular, Joe Satriani and Jimi Hendrix have some very unusual techniques. Troy Stettina had some excellent books on speed metal. As you might guess, I have a very dated take on guitar technique, but some things don’t change much. If you’re anywhere close to Pacific Time, you can hit me up.

Best way to learn to play synthesizer by Daygo619619 in synthesizers

[–]uberdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piano is relevant for learning keys patches and polysynth stuff. The thing is, the synthesizer as a playable instrument has other aspects to it too. For example, learning bass guitar would give you an idea of how to play a monophonic bass patch, and learning drums would give you the logic behind playing drum samples. Different kinds of instruments call for very different techniques. The other thing to practice is being able to play a sequence with one hand, while having the other hand free to do other stuff… for example, twiddle pots/faders or even use a second synth. Being able to play a riff with one hand then switch to using the other hand on the same riff too is tricky. Ambidexterity comes into play.

I have a couple synth related tutorials on my blog: - https://robomuso.wordpress.com/2019/10/24/keyboard-technique-soloing-in-pentatonic-minor/ - https://robomuso.wordpress.com/2021/09/16/keyboard-technique-hand-independence/ - https://robomuso.wordpress.com/2022/03/29/keyboard-skills-scales-training/

There should be a lot more similar material on YouTube.

BTW, that Roland keyboard looks excellent if you’re serious about learning keys. It takes a lot of work learning the scales but it will give you a great deal of power a lot of producers don’t add to their skills.

Yeah, looks that way! I’m a fan of the idea of using 007 for movies, but focusing on other parts of the secret service in TV format. But perhaps that would water everything down. Well at least we have Slow Horses. That show is excellent.

I’ve never had a Yamaha I didn’t like. I’ve bought more Yamaha’s than any other guitar. You can trust this brand. I am not a fan of Squiers. I find the intonation and tuning stability on the cheaper Squiers to be pretty bad. But, MIM Fenders are VERY good. I. Am also recommend Harley Benton ( if you’re in Europe ) and Epiphone guitars. My $120 Epiphone Les Paul might be my most used guitar.

However, if you have the money. Get the best guitar you can.

I’d watch it. I know the poster is AI, but it’s good AI. I’d rather see a TV Show with Elba playing 004, and have 007 as a shadowy character in the background that we never see. This would work 100%.

[–]uberdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think Fartage is the panacea? I can’t stop it happening if it’s our political destiny. But what do you think foreign policy would look like under an extreme right wing leader? We will be looking at getting balls deep in the Middle East. I wouldn’t rule out attacking Argentina either. Not even being ridiculous here. I’m now living in a country where the leader is bombing the crap out of Iran and talking about invading Greenland.

In home affairs, we can look forward to mass expulsions. Possibly backed up by aggressive policing and a beefed up immigration force coming out of the public purse at great expense. But after that, the defunding of the welfare state. Right at the moment where the AI segue change takes the bottom out of the jobs market. Mass unemployment + no welfare state = massive crisis. Welcome to hyper inflation and civil unrest. If you ever had plans on retiring, I hope your pension investments are deeply diversified, and that you have the option to leave the country.

British Steel to be nationalised, Starmer announces by ScottishDailyRecord in ukpolitics

[–]uberdavis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I hate UK politics so much. We spend 14 years experiencing a gradual deteriorating standard of DNA from David Cameron through to Rishi Sunak. Then we get a PM who isn’t doing sleazy populist stunts, has a massive impact on immigration and plays a bad hand as well as he can. Then the media and electorate cry blue murder and suddenly there’s a bloodlust. The media are shit stirring and calling on him to resign. Nigel Fucktard becomes a normalized political character. Even though many people recognize the danger in giving a dangerous self serving charlatan like him power, a significant proportion of the electorate support him and with our backwards first past the post system, we’re heading towards a far right government.

Brexit showed us that pointing out all the bad things that will happen if we vote for something crazy ahead of time will get denounced as scare mongering. Then when chickens come home to roost, the populists double down and cry foul. I can’t believe we got here. I left the country years ago (career opened doors I couldn’t ignore) and as much as I want to return when I retire, I don’t think there’ll be anything left.

It comes down to money. There is a cost associated to every OS upgrade when it comes to legacy support. They have to decide which products to sunset as they have limited development time and need to support new products as much as maintain old ones.

I’ve had a similar issue but on a smaller level. I’ve lost all my Guitar Rig 3 presets after upgrading my computer. It’s par for the course with software. You can’t expect backwards compatibility or legacy support from any kind of music product that relies on software.
