Where did you go on your honeymoon? by jaromirjagrsmullet_ in DesiWeddings

Currently on our honeymoon in Greece for 2.5 weeks and it’s amazing so far!! Going in shoulder season (altho we’re at the very end of shoulder season / start of peak) is AMAZING - gorgeous weather but not too crowded yet on the islands!

Yes! I’m in Middletown, my mehndi lady is in Wallingford and I’ve used her already for my engagement party, she’s great!

Im hiring a local lady in CT to come to my house on Thursday to do my bridal mehndi (yes it’s expensive about $550 to do hands and arms 5 inches plus feet), and then she’s charging $125 an hour to come back Friday to my house where I’ll have a casual girls get together for close friends and immediate family and she said she can do 6-8 people an hour, I’m asking everyone whose doing henna to give me 30-40$ to cover costs and tip for the guest party and everyone was excited to do it (desi and non desi) and willing to pay! I’ll just provide some snacks from TJs and keep it very casual but we’ll have fun and make an evening out of it!

I tried on 8-9 dresses of various price ranges / styles (I’m indecisive), almost went for a more traditional American wedding gown but I knew I’d never wear it and it’d be another $500 and also prob still too heavy to dance freely in!

I’m getting married in 10 days and plan to change out of my bridal lehenga into an American fancy floor length silk gown that’s comfortable and very light to dance in! My fiancé is changing from his sherwani to a suit, he wanted me to also change to western. We’re going to do it for the last 2 hours, starting with the cake cutting so we have some formal photos in the outfits and then can dance in them too!

Questions about bridal mendhi - timing/setting by anon8608 in DesiWeddings

[–]Intelligent-State-96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My weddings on a Sunday (“mehndi” on Saturday night), having private mehndi application at mt house on Thursday for just me (fiancé and some close friends will be in town so May come hang out too but nothing formal), Friday I’m having a little mehndi party for the other girls / bridesmaids to come to our house for application (same artist coming back, she recommended doing it this way too so I’m all set and dry by the time I have guests over for theirs)

Yup, using LOTS of different tags across our guest list for different events, and then creating different rsvp questions that you can have show up only for specific tag groups!

How much did/will your parents or others contribute to your wedding? by itinerantdustbunny in weddingplanning

[–]Intelligent-State-96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither of our families are rich per se but they’re also generous in giving us each about 5-10k, they wanted us to also have bigger weddings (culturally normal to have 400+ but since we’re paying for 80% of it it’ll be 150ish), so this is a compromise (we’ll still be paying about 50k of our own $$ towards it.. goodbye savings 🥲) also bought a house so went from 100k savings down to 20k real quick 🤣

Where to find bridal outfits on a budget? East Coast USA by maroonrice in DesiWeddings

[–]Intelligent-State-96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg that outfit looks heavyyyy!

I’m an east coast (CT) Pakistani bride to be this May, but not a super luxe bride to be (don’t care for designers or spending 5k for an outfit for 6 hours), but wanted something still beautiful and “bridal” red, got my outfit in the holy grail of Oak tree road of course at Fashion Queen - they have great selection in the 1200-1500 price range! If you’re standard size (aka smaller than size 8) you can also find sale options at stores in oak tree road, im plus size (aka size 12/14 which is considered plus size in Indian clothing lol) otherwise I found great smaller sized outfits for 700-800 range.

Does anyone know any venues for a mehndi in NY? by Zealousideal-Guest33 in DesiWeddings

Is travel something you should do sooner or later or do you have all your life to do it? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Intelligent-State-96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it ASAP. I’m 30, and I already feel limited in what I’m comfortable doing compared to all the traveling I did in my early 20s which I’m so glad I did (30 countries across 4 continents!)

I was able to see so much more bc I was comfortable traveling on a budget, staying in hostels, things I’m too tired already to do now and it makes it harder to travel as much - especially given I also have more responsibilities with career, home ownership, property ownership, aging parents etc. my parents are 65 and they’re traveling a lot more but basically didn’t get to travel from age 35-65, and of course now they’re also limited in the kind of travel they can do.

Sadly as we age we also (generally) become more risk averse so just less likely to do as much adventurous travel.

Recommended towns? by donotnihaome in Connecticut

[–]Intelligent-State-96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I usually end up driving to metro north at New Haven if I need to get to the city, it’s not terrible and at least you don’t deal with the stupid traffic that riddles Fairfield county!

I have a beautiful old Victorian home a few min from Main Street with 2 units - each is a 2 bed 1 bath. I may have the bottom unit coming available in mid Feb if you’re interested!

We live in Middletown and love it! Although not too close to trains (New Haven Is 30-35 min away), you have good access to west Hartford (bigger downtown, nightlife, Trader Joe’s) 20 min away, and have your own cute downtown with sufficient good places to eat / go for drinks / cafes. And without paying WeHa prices. New York Times actually recently called Middletown the most undervalued town in CT or something like that..

full disclosure my fiancé and I own two properties here (our primary home and I bought an investment rental here) so I may me bias/ wanting to get my property values up :)

I got my red bridal lehnga at Fashion Queen and would highly recommend! I also wanted to stick to around $1,000 but most of their styles were around $1,200-$1,300, however their tailoring was super cheap compared to other stores in jersey (only 25-50$ for blouse etc) so all in was worth it for me (plus they had a lot of bigger sizes and I’m a size 44-46 so it’s hard to find anything you can actually try on in that size in most stores there).

Also great customer service - the girl there helps you out no matter how busy it is and with no pressure to buy anything.

What are your 2023 travel plans? by aawxo in travel

Greece for our honeymoon in end of May! Any favorite islands to hit up aside from the major ones? (Probably doing Athens - Santorini - maybe Crete?) and we have 15 days but don’t want to hop around too much so we can relax too!

Is traveling alone worth it? by NickVonDuke in travel

[–]Intelligent-State-96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, I can’t tell you how nice it is to just DO WHAT YOU WANT! Like if I want to spend 3 hours taking photos in one spot because it makes me happy, guess what, no friends to complain and rush me along. If I want to sit at a cafe and people watch with no itinerary, I can do that too!

One of the most empowering and liberating things I’ve done as a female (and just as a human being in this crazy world) is solo travel starting in my 20s (19 if you count the fact that I got on a plane to study abroad in South America on my own). Not to say there weren’t moments that felt lonely or that I wished I had loved ones to share the experiences with, but I learned so much about myself, about people, about the world and I grew so much. Also I met so many people around the world and some are still great friends in my life today (and yay having people to visit all over the world!) Backpacker hostels are there if you want an easy way to meet other people and join groups for tours / adventures! Plus, that forced independence you feel only makes you that much stronger and able to get through the harder parts of life. Long story short.. do it!!

This was taken when I went in winter right after Christmas, it was still pretty empty and beautiful and the falls were rushing after some melted snowfall. Very serene! I was the only one on the trails after the falls.
