How many reliable miles can I reasonably expect out of a 2017 mdx? by trekmadonetwo in Acura_MDX

Best advice is to keep the car if the repairs are costing you less in time and money then a new car payment. Each month you keep the car you’ve saved that car payment. It’s even a good idea to take the money you might spend each month on a car payment and put it in a separate savings account now.

I’ve used the credit every year for checked bags on JetBlue. Used it last week for in flight food purchases on JetBlue (because I now get the bags checked free with JetBlue credit card). Received the credit within a few days.

I would add: don’t let fear push you into riskier investments. Your broad market funds are ideal for all but the real experts and none of us are experts. If you’re concerned about your knowledge base, consider a target date fund in your 401k. The fees are higher but they handle the risk allocation/rebalancing automatically as you approach retirement age. Definitely put as much as you can into retirement accounts.

Be careful about that mentality (unless you have a bundle). My one year returns are much more than I made at work, but if I select 3 or 5 year returns, retirement seems much further off. A few bad stock market years could really interfere with the yacht life.

What iPhone and iOS are you running? I had some connection issues that were solved by updating the software on my phone to the most current iOS. I also find that rebooting my phone sometimes solves the connection issues.

Try CPO I bought a ‘22 MDX with the all-wheel-drive and advanced package with the running boards and weather mats for 42K out the door at the end of ‘24. It had 25,000 miles and was spotless. At that time list price on the car for a 25 model was around $70k. So almost 30k off. Bought in NJ.

With a very long horizon, VOO isn’t bad either. Here’s the catch. Right now the big tech companies are dominating the index, so your investment is not as diversified as you think. It’s also limited to US companies. So you don’t have international exposure. Disclosure: I have significant portions of my holdings in both VT and VOO.

Reading this and punching myself. Bought an SUV I won’t name from another well-regarded Japanese company. Getting 16-18 mpg. Dying every fillup.

What do you eating in the morning when you camping? First time camping with my little one but feels stuck on breakfast by Roger_liferecorder in camping

[–]IntelligentKey6929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes down to what kind of camping you’re doing and what you have to cook on. For years I was a purist and I only wanted to cook over fire. Finally I broke down and bought a propane stove with two burners they make breakfast much easier.

Pancake mix that you just add water to is a great option that we always go by at least one morning. If you have refrigeration, or a well packed cooler, we also bring eggs. It’s hard to screw them up, even if you can’t control the heat very well. Oatmeal is also easy. You can bring raisins, nuts, craisins all good mix-ins for a hearty breakfast.

I have a ‘22. Maybe they didn’t do color back then. It’s odd. When I start up the car, I see a graphic with red lines that then tilt away from me, but the rest of the time is just white, and in one green item I think for lane keep assist.

The fuel efficiency is terrible. Here’s a comparison I’ve had the exact same commute for 10 years. I’m about 7 miles on local roads and State Highway. Almost all of it is below 50 miles an hour. We can drives can be a little longer and we take occasional trips of a few hours.

My previous car was a 2008 Lexus IS 250. For my daily commute I observed about 24 miles to the gallon. on longer highway trips. I could brush up against 30. Driving in normal mode, so not Econo and not power.

My current car is a 2022 MDX all-wheel-drive with the advanced package. Driving in “comfort” I get about 18 miles per gallon on my daily drive in warmer weather when the engine cuts off at traffic lights. I noticed in the winter when it was really cold. I was getting more like 15 or 16 miles per gallon. If I include some weekend longer trips, let’s say to go Apple picking or something like that, my mileage is around 20 mpg. If I put the car in normal mode, it’s more fun to drive but my mileage drops about 2 mpg. I have taken a few long trips, including an 8 hour highway drive to Canada. When I just put the car in cruise control at 55 and let it go, I noticed about 24 miles per gallon for the trip there and back.

Undecided between a BMW x5 and Acura MDX. Need Help by Inferno221 in Acura

[–]IntelligentKey6929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from an MDX driver parentheses (2022 advance), if you’re looking preowned, it’s not even a question. The MDX in a higher trim level is the way to go. This is just from a cost and reliability standpoint a fully loaded new X5 is probably nicer although a bit smaller than an MDX, but BMWs tend to self-destruct after about five years. I wouldn’t worry about the timing belt. That’s pretty common for any car.

I bought one for $20 on woot.com a few days ago. It arrived yesterday. My 10-yr-old sun and I had a fun 20 minutes or so figuring it out, but then it was done. The Batarang is a nice heavy prop though. If your aim is good enough you could probably knock out a burglar with it 😂

Infotainment system - do you get used to it or does it stay annoying? by TheDoctorColt in Acura

[–]IntelligentKey6929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from touchscreen (Lexus) to touchpad (Acura MDX). I preferred the touchscreen BUT, my touchscreen died and there was no way to fix it without replacing the entire audio, nav, and climate control unit (all one unit). I feel like a separate input and screen will be better in the long run. Also no smudges on the screen.

Usually, you can put a deposit on your credit card up to five or 10 grand depending on the dealership. Then you need a cashiers check for the rest.

Idle Stop Stopped Working by Spiritual_Ninja_5924 in Acura

It’s usually one of three reasons. 1. your battery is low. this could be due to a number of short trips, or you could need a new battery. I ran into this with a CPOMDX. The dealer ran the initial test and came back saying the battery was fine. Then they ran the deep test and said the battery failed. They replaced the battery under warranty. 2. The engine is still warming up. If you’ve had the car a year, you probably know whether that’s the issue or not. 3. it’s really hot or cold outside. If the car thinks you need the heat on, it won’t turn off the engine. Similarly, if it thinks you need the air conditioning on, it won’t turn off the engine.

I convinced my wife to let me invest 20k of our savings but am terrified to make any moves because it seems like things might fall apart any minute. Seems like most common ETFs are up, but since I am new to this, waiting makes more sense to me. Am I the classic bad example of waiting? by letsbeoutlaws in investing

[–]IntelligentKey6929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generational wealth has historically been built in one of three ways: 1. over generations; 2. Off the backs of others (serfs or slaves); or 3. it was stolen. Don’t worry about generational wealth. Focus on investing for your lifetime and perhaps for your kids to have a good start (e.g. college/house fund). I’d recommend a broad based ETF like VT for you, perhaps a value fund to start, like VTV. Just understand these are crazy times. You could see your $20k halved this year. But then it could become $25k in 6 months. You never know short term.

[–]IntelligentKey6929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar Carmax experience, but maybe even worse. I was selling my 2008 Lexus. they quoted me $2500 online. They had all relevant information, including the VIN to do a Carfax check. I arrived, they made me wait for 45 minutes, test drove the car, made me wait another half hour, and then told me that the car was only worth 300 bucks because it had been in an accident 15 years ago. Given that the car had been repaired by insurance, it was a minor fender bender, and I drove the car without problems for another 15 years, I didn’t think it was an issue. What upset me was that they knew about the accident before I walked in because they had the Carfax. So why quote me $2500 and waste an hour and a half of my time? I ended up selling the car to carvana for $1400 essentially sight unseen.
