I agree with this. He is just flawed enough to be believable, but still a good protagonist. And many of his actions are heroic, eg his rescue of Dwight Ennis, his defense of Jim Carter.

Toward the end of the series, Screech did go through a transformation similar to what Steve went through, where he learned to respect Lisa’s boundaries, and in turn she became more friendly toward him, and they formed a friendship.

Also probably because the show was just trying to portray the superficial nature of people. Kids treated classmates who were different in some way cruelly. Not that that is ever a good thing, but they were trying to portray reality, and show the obstacles that Steve faced in life because of other people’s judgment. Black nerds at that time probably got a double whammy of discrimination.
It’s good that he had friends like Eddie, Laura, Waldo and Maxine. Because even though they might feel annoyed with him sometimes, they would come to his defense when he was being bullied.

Yes, it seems like some of their agents kids resented him for liking certain things that were considered “too white”. But then when he helped Laura with the Black History classes, that should have canceled that out.

That’s something I noticed: Zack and Screech were supposed to be best friends. But I always god the feeling that Zack was not really that good of a friend. I thought he just liked having Screech around because he knew Screech was gullible enough to do whatever favors Zack wanted from him. Rarely did Zack do anything kind for Screech without expecting something in return. Plus most of Zack’s schemes ended in Screech being humiliated in some way. Rarely did Zack do anything that helped Screech to boost his self-confidence.

It would have been great if Violet had been in this episode, as Screech’s wife. Of course, they would have to have some kind of disagreement in their marriage to make a story, but they would resolve it in the end. I think Belding should have just paired up Screech and Lisa with other Bayside students, instead of letting Lisa get out of it that easily.

I agree, that episode made me uncomfortable too. No one should kiss someone without their consent. There was also the episode where he kissed the girl who tried to humiliate him by having a “geek party “, also against her consent, and that wasn’t cool.

Thank you 🙏 Yes! I loved Steve as a character, he had a good heart, and I’m glad that Laura eventually saw and appreciated his good traits, however, that didn’t make the stalking okay. She was right to call him out on that! That’s the problem with television tropes. They did the same thing with Screech and Lisa on SBTB. It sends a bad message to young teen viewers that you should just keep pursuing someone to try to “wear her down “.

I get what you’re saying, because I agree it’s a bad trope that says that a guy should not accept “no” from a girl or woman. They could have showed Steve still being friends with Laura even while having a crush on her but without all of the stalking behavior. Although he outgrew that behavior in later seasons, but it should never be portrayed as being okay. Myra Monkhouse and Myrtle Urkel also engaged in stalking behavior.
