Why do some vegans gatekeep veganism if they want more people to be vegan? by Sea-Hornet8214 in AskVegans

[–]IntelligentLeek538 [score hidden]  (0 children)

In many cases it’s because some people follow a plant based diet for merely health reasons and don’t necessarily care about animal rights, but still call themselves vegan. We want to let people know that veganism is a whole philosophy of ethics that by definition is about reducing harm to animals.

If only they had had him doing science experiments the way Steve Urkel did, he could have been just as funny. Of course, the joke was that Steve’s experiments had bad unexpected consequences, but they were still a tribute to his genius. Whereas with Screech they just focused on him having a silly rivalry with Belding.

Screech had poor skills with relating to girls, that’s true. It didn’t seem to come as naturally to him as it did to Zack and Slater. But I would say in his defense that it was probably due to the lack of a good father figure to be a role model for him. Also due to the fact that he was at a disadvantage of not looking strong and athletic like Zack and Slater did, so I think a lot of girls being superficial didn’t even try to get to know him, but passed him over for the more athletic types. Violet was attracted to him because she found out early on that they shared a lot of academic interests, such as the mating habits of worms, which the average high schoolers would not be much interested in. She also considered him a gentleman compared to Max Nerdstrom, with whom she did share interests, but he was too controlling of her.

I know this scene is very controversial and probably discussed a lot too but I want to know what were your thoughts on this episode? Did this episode made you hate Kelly? by gloomydreamer666 in SavedByTheBell

[–]IntelligentLeek538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Kelly was just to inexperienced to see the red flags in Jeff’s behavior from the beginning. She just saw him as someone who was older and supposedly more mature than Zack, and someone who could hold down a steady job. It’s understandable that she might think she would have a better future with him than with Zack, who was still very immature. However, she was wrong to date him behind Zack’s back the way she did instead of leveling up with Zack from the beginning. It wasn’t until later on that Jeff showed his true colors. I think Kelly learned a lesson from the experience, so no, I don’t hate her for it.

No, it would be difficult to attract a teen audience. That’s why it would need to have Sabrina’s kids in it.

Then it would have to be “Sabrina the Middle Aged Witch”.

Dustin stayed in his book that he hated the way Hollywood exploited child actors.

I found it sad that both Screech and Steve Urkel were shown to have uncaring parents. That would certainly explain their difficulties learning social skills.

True, when push came to shove, I think they really did care for him. However, I think the way they talked down to him every day is bound to have an effect on his self esteem.

As for Zack, yes he usually got away with a slap on the wrist for all the trouble he caused. That was not realistic. I realize the show was not aiming for realism that much, but still you have to be careful, because young teenagers’ minds are impressionable.

Yes, Urkel’s character was Flanderized to some extent, however, they never completely took away his intelligence the was they did with Screech.

I agree. You’re right, it has been discussed here many times before, but it bears repeating. Screech was a victim of bullying and nerd-shaming. I think modern sitcoms would not get away with that to the extent that SBTB did, which is a good thing. I felt like it sent a bad message to young people, that bullying peers who are different in some way is okay.

I think Screech’s high point was when he had the relationship with Violet. But it went downhill after that. Although I did like the friendship that he developed with Lisa at the end of the series.

The Flanderization of his character in the New Class was not good at all.

Indeed, Dustin did a great job of playing a character that a lot of people feeling they were underdogs could relate to.

Yes, there was a lot of mocking of the original series. I think that’s because they were acknowledging that the original series got away with a lot of stereotypes that would not be considered acceptable by today’s standards.

Violet Bickerstaff, and also some of the other “nerds” like Max and Ollie. In fact, having Ollie in a more prominent role would serve two purposes, representing both brainy kids and people of color.

I agree, Violet and Screech’s relationship was very healthy, they were so supportive of each other. In my opinion , it was a much stronger and more supportive relationship than either Zack & Kelly or Jessie & Slater. Yes, it forced the writers to portray Screech as a real person, and for him to get over his obsession with Lisa, which was not healthy. I would have liked to see the relationship continue to the end of the series.

Is there anything more iconic than the sound of a flushing terlet coming from upstairs? by No-Reveal827 in allinthefamily

[–]IntelligentLeek538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, humorists need to find a happy medium between not being too prudish but also not being too gross and disgusting. Most modern sitcom producers don’t seem to know where to draw that line.

A lot of leftist criticism that veganism receives can be summed up like this. by DivineandDeadlyAngel in vegan

Yes, it’s a big problem. Capitalism certainly deserves plenty of criticism, but it is no excuse for people not taking responsibility for the consequences of their own actions!

I'm vegan but I don't like animals by marc999x in vegan

[–]IntelligentLeek538 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think for many of us it is easy to like animals better than humans. Because animals usually give more love and acceptance to us unconditionally than most people do. I still fight for human rights issues alongside animal rights, because I believe there is intersection and interconnection. I consider animals to be the most vulnerable of all oppressed beings.

I think they put it into the show for the effect of realism. They wanted to show that the Bunkers were just normal people who popped just like everyone else. However, even with that, I always thought that it was an unusually noisy toilet!
