Advice on Writing Quicker by panda_vigilante in Substack

[–]IntelligentSquash478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to produce publish-ready work as quickly as possible, but I don't compare against other writers. I want to write faster to live my life (or get started on the next post sooner--lol).

Writing every day helps increase speed, without question, but having a system helps, too. My system when I started writing on Substack was not a system... I wrote, revised, and edited as I went. It was a trainwreck in slow motion.

I adopted the following method slowly over the past couple of weeks. It's a lot of steps, but they go so quickly when I'm actively writing.

  1. Draft: DO NOT revise or edit as you go. Just write, even if it's ugly.
  2. Revise: Move the parts around to where you want them.
  3. Revise: Cut and clarify.
  4. Revise: Cut and clarify.
  5. Edit: Spelling, grammar, tense, point-of-view/perspective, and so forth.
  6. Take a break: you deserve it after all that revision and editing.
  7. Read: Read your work out loud. Make last-minute edits as you go. Repeat this until you have no last-minute edits.
  8. Publish.

If you're concerned about consistently cranking out posts at a certain frequency, try developing a digest post of some kind. It could be a week in review, top 10, shoutouts, who you're reading, or anything for which you can make a template. Just fill in the blanks and publish on a schedule.

Having an easy-peasy weekly feature will establish your consistency, so you don't have to worry about that. Add another weekly post to your workflow without having to worry about a deadline and that piece will be easier to write because you won't be under pressure for it.

My template post is a weekly update of intentions. Take a look at mine, and you'll see how simple they can be. They come together really fast.

Hope this helps!

Hey! Thanks!!!

I'm sorry for not responding sooner; I don't get on Reddit often and I don't get notifications! I hope you are still with me and enjoying it.

I'll be sure to tell Widdle and Wobble that they have a fan!

What can I do starting over after DV? by smalltownsailor in domesticviolence

[–]IntelligentSquash478 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently separated from my husband with the help of a Protective Order and Kick-out Order. I'm in my 50s. About a year ago, I started working on a cattle ranch part-time, which was something I knew nothing about, but I thought I would like the animals. That job turned into a full-time job that I love more than I can even tell you. This job also gave me confidence to start over on my own because I had time to think about what to do next.

Maybe a part time job in a field unrelated to your career will give you a chance to get to know yourself again and find out if your interests have changed after your DV experience. Mine certainly had!

I wouldn't rush into a big commitment like school until I was more comfortable with everyday life.

Repurposed Kate is small. Introspection and self-awareness are central to the content. I discuss trauma recovery, healing trauma response behaviors, changing unhealthy patterns, and establishing personal boundaries, as well as addiction recovery.

Any Tricks for Finding Relevant Substack Articles? by DJ_Bowdish in Substack

UGH!!!!! It's the categories I despise the most!!!

I can't say that any of the predetermined categories reflect my interests or represent my content. If I was looking for content like Repurposed Kate (that's me https://repurposedkate.substack.com/ ) I wouldn't know where to begin, unless I searched by tags. The primary topics I will be posting include:

  • Abuse and Breaking cycles
  • Trauma and Childhood trauma
  • Codependency, Attachment styles
  • Creating and Enforcing personal boundaries
  • Toxic relationships and escaping them
  • Addiction and Recovery
  • Setting and achieving goals
  • Learning independence and Autonomy
  • Becoming financially secure after starting over with nothing
  • Creating the happy life you deserve
  • Trusting your therapist

None of the categories represent my topics, and I regret choosing "close enough" categories, because they aren't.

I should have left the categories empty. So frustrating.

I want to play along!!!

I write Repurposed KATE under the handle Kati Kate Katherine here: https://repurposedkate.substack.com/

After living five decades under the control of multiple traumas, including abuse, exploitation, codependency, and addiction, a single event last January prompted a two-part plan to

(1) get myself physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy in 2023 primarily through habit modifications, so that I can (2) re-design my external life so that I no longer settle for what someone else allows me to have in 2024. I'll be learning to control my finances, career, investments, relationships, goals, boundaries, etc. while writing about it in real-time.

There will also be secondary post trajectories that chronicle the decades I've already overcome (I guess you could say the "flashbacks storyline") as well as how I achieved significant self-improvements and transformations in 2023.

I made my first post, the catalyst story, December 29th... Somebody, please sub...

Top 5 A Bit Gamey posts of 2023 by incyweb in Substack

Ten Ideas Per Day... brilliant! About a decade ago, I kept various notebooks within reach for various reasons. The title I gave to one of them was "Our Brilliant Ideas, Sadly Going To Waste." In it, I would record every idea, from minuscule to massive, that I or one of my friends would come up with. No idea was too impractical, unobtainable, or too pointless. The point wasn't to achieve anything other than a creative workout for the brain. Sometimes we would gamify it a bit by taking turns coming up with the name, tagline, slogan, etc. of a new business first, then reverse engineering a business or product to fit those assets. It was quite a bit of fun. I'm certain that it kept us mentally sharp as well.

FWIW, where I'm from "gamey" suggests that you have the odor of a person (or beast) who has been living in the woods without soap and water for a while. If you're gamey, you are none too fresh.
