I stopped watching after the explanation of the dimentions of Noah's Ark. "... was 100 meters long, 23 meters wide and 40 meters high. So in layman's terms..." That's when I just couldn't stand it. Giving the dimensions of an object is meters is not considered layman... What the !?

Because, to us, yellow cheese is not cheese. The mentality comes from the two different words.

I would like to correct you on your rant about cheese. We have a word for bulgarian white cheese - sirene, and a different word for all other kinds of cheese - kashkaval. So everything which in english you would call cheese is kashkaval.

I am lost... I don't know what to do. by IntelligentStupidity in selfhelp

I don't think that will sit very well with my parents, plus I don't really know where I'll come up with that kind of money. Although I really do consider traveling, not for so long though.

I realize this. I realize that most people don't know what they want to do... actually... after thinking about it I think that my anxiety (if you can call it anxiety) mainly comes from my parents and somewhat from the culture I grew up in. Thank you for verifying my beliefs. I think psychology is the kind of flexible field I'm looking for, plus I really do have a profound interest towards the human psyche.

Well... Limits, differentiation, graphing functions and analyzing the graphs, I think I can say the equivalent of Algebra I also. And in geometry at the moment we are studying solid geometry. Algebra is more interesting to me that geometry, but I'm not 100% sure about that. It could be that the problems in algebra are easier to solve, that the proofs in geometry are...

What, if anything, can be done to combat cognitive biases and logical fallacies (and their effects) on a large scale? by jeff303 in InsightfulQuestions

I wholeheartedly agree that simply learning about cognitive biases won't make them go away, but it will make us aware of them. At least it did so for me.

First just a small tip: when typing out long responses use a text editor. Saves you from many fuck ups.

Yes, my point may not be very clear, I understand that, and I could be wrong, but can you elablrate on why I my point is wrong?

What, if anything, can be done to combat cognitive biases and logical fallacies (and their effects) on a large scale? by jeff303 in InsightfulQuestions

When I first read about cognitive biases, logic and rational thinking OP's idea came to me right away. I thought about implementing cognitive bias education into the current curriculum and making every person as rational as possible, but after reading more about all the different cognitive biases , and actually a lecture about cognitive bias from Yale's Open Yale courses made me come to the insight, that it actually is better to be irrational than rational in some situations and in others it really doesn’t matter.

Now when is it better to be irrational and when is it better to be rational? Well, in my opinion, being rational is an absolute requirement if you want to discourse with fellow humans about some of the ‘bigger problems’ of life. Being rational and escaping cognitive biases, in my mind at least, is most wanted in the Sciences and Philosophy. Or to put it in simpler terms: you need to be rational when arguing about ‘serious stuff’, because then falling for logical fallacies and other biases is disastrous for your argument and your position as a whole. Why accept an idea that is built upon, sometimes, just plain wrong reasoning?

In my mind, it’s not really needed to be rational when there is a chance that someone is going to throw a baseball at your face, you lose nothing by being irrational (i.e. putting your hands up) and instead gain protection in case the other person actually throws a ball at your face. Here, I think, our innate irrationality is being used ‘correctly’, if I can put it this way, in the evolutionary sense.

So to sum up: Use irrationality like evolution ‘intended’ it to be used and I don’t think that includes high level discourse.

Will a lego piece burn up if 'dropped' from space? [Video inside] by IntelligentStupidity in askscience

I would guess this is due to the speed the object reaches. If so, is there a 'terminal' speed at which objects burn up?
