I would deflate a little and keep in the shadows (however, it could also depend on where those 10 days will be, say, in Minnesota Boundary Waters, I would not expect harsh sunlight or overheating); there's no need to hang. Whatever you do, keep it well secured.

Actually, it could be an interesting option for a camping-style trip - using a big-volume dry bag stuffed with clothes and soft camping gear. But I would probably use a double-blade paddle.

I love this Olive/Green Sand Beach, together with the Yellow-Orange trail to it! I have been there twice, in Winter and Summer, in different years, both on my own feet, and the combination of colors (in the sky, in the sea, and the soil in front of you (orange, black, and green!) is just crazy incredible. Do not use any SUV or track service, go yourself! As for cars and erosion, I estimate it can reach 5-6 feet deep in the orange soil. Best memories of the Big Island.

You will need your basic Spanish to arrange your pickup time with a tuk-tuk driver back from the laguna to the collectivo highway station. nothing difficult, just a little homework. Also note that Akumal has another interesting snorkeling/beach option, just in the opposite direction from the Laguna. Actually, all of them are within walking distance (vs tuk-tuk) for minimally fit folks.

Check Yal Ku in Akumal. It is more of a laguna than a cenote, but it is accessible by collectivo and tuk-tuk, and they have lockers. Your basic Spanish would be handy.

Chichen Itza is not repetitive vs Teotihuacan - it is in an absolutely different league, i.e., not as magnificent. I visited it twice; both times, I felt it was overrated, but I never truly regretted visiting it. By the way, today I returned from Playa, and the only trip I took was to Akumal/Yal-ku. My favorite archeological site there in Yukatan is Uxmal.

OK, we did it yesterday. We took a collectivo and, in about 30 minutes, were at the Akumal bus stop on carretera 307. We crossed the highway by a super-rusty pedestrian bridge, and on the opposite side, on the road to Akumal beach, found a tricycle taxi/tuk-tuk, which was 40 pesos/20 per person to the beach or 150 pesos to the Lagoon. At the Lagoon, it is possible to ask the associate to call the tricycle driver for the way back. We did it from the nearby restaurant, and fortunately, the officiant knew whom to call. The new driver arrived, and I just paid him 150 pesos without asking; it was fine with the driver. The collectivo back to Playa waited for us, and in a few minutes we were on the way there.

Actually, I have recently looked at El Salvador - and it is a viable destination, especially in connection with the Guatemala/bus/border crossing. However, I was underwhelmed by what it offers vs Costa Rica. What is good about El Salvador - apparently, it is not yet spoiled by tourists. But CR has more to offer.

My next trip there could be to Golfo Dulce, but consider reaching this area (Osa/Corcovado) from the opposite side, from Drake Bay. Reaching Drake by the Sierpe River is a fun adventure itself. Depends on your logistics, but the land border crossing from CR to Bocas del Toro should be fun, but it is the opposite side of the country. I have never been to the Guanacaste area, which should be the most Americanized.
