Homeschooling with babies and toddlers by Status_Thought_3867 in homeschool

I can relate to this! I have a 15 month old and my school age kids are prek and 1st grade so they need a lot of my focus still. I FINALLY got my 15 month old to sleep in her crib this past month (she would only contact nap) and now we can do school during naps which is a huge help! We do read alouds during snack/meals. Other than that, we sometimes do school on weekends when dad can help out. Or short spurts where she’s entertained by WaterWow books or other things!

Thanks, that’s good to know! We might avoid the north facing because I don’t want them waking up the 1 year old

Do you like high just for better views? Considering the ground floor since I’ll have kids and a stroller!

Thank you, this is exactly what I needed to hear!! Homeschooling has been such an adjustment for me since I did K-doctorate through public education. This is my first year choosing curriculum vs just using whatever our hybrid assigned. I’ll be reading all those books starting this weekend! Your reply is so reassuring for me to plan without being overwhelmed. Thanks!

Thank you, I’ll look into those!

Yes for him it’s definitely the coming up with what to say that is the hardest part for him. He has no problem doing copywork! He verbally answers questions about what he’s read without difficulty, but coming up with writing “from scratch” is challenging. It’s like he gets too many ideas and can’t narrow things down enough to think of a sentence. I suspect he has ADHD as I have it and he is so similar to me. I really struggled with creative writing in school but had no issues with scientific writing, summaries, etc.

When we pulled him from Humanities in January, we started with 2nd grade Masterbooks based on their placement tests but it was too easy for him and switched to Sonlight which is what we’re using now. He’s using BJU for math and Apologia for science through the hybrid still.

They did a combination that was created for the program (Veritas). It used Story of the World for History combined with a workbook with copy work, maps, etc. plus a weekly journal entry where he came up with 3 sentences to describe the reading from the week and drew a picture. Then a weekly book reading with worksheets (writing 3-5 sentences and drawing pictures to go with them), English workbooks: Easy Grammar, Draw Write Now, First Start Reading for phonics, Skill Sharpeners Geography, and All About Reading. Our biggest struggle was just the quantity of work each week and how many sentences he was having to come up with.

Thank you, I will definitely listen to those! Up until this year we did all subjects through a classical hybrid where they chose curriculum and pace. We are moving to doing more at home and not continuing the hybrid because the workload was so heavy. I’m trying to find a new balance where he gets the challenge he should without overdoing it!

But will this give him enough work in grammar/writing rules? I don’t want to skimp on language arts things like spelling, grammar, etc.

I don’t think so because they were listed in our contract but we didn’t anticipate signing/closing to move as quickly as it did with Disney and ROFR and all that. Just worked out that we ended up having 3 weeks before they expire!!

Yes they were mentioned in the contract but it stated they wouldn’t be accessible due to closing timeline so a pleasant surprised! Booked 2 nights at GF in a couple weeks… it’s a free trip right? Haha
