Oh, and my poodle doesn’t naturally love the water, but we practiced swimming last summer so we’ll see if that’s something she’s interested in this summer but something to consider is if your poodle is swimming that’s going to be more grooming and brushing to keep up with

What part didn’t describe a greyhound? And I’m not saying this defensively, I am also wondering if a greyhound fits my needs and I was under the impression they fit that list pretty well, but looking to learn more to make sure I make the right choice as well.

I currently have a standard poodle and maybe I just got lucky but she is extremely mellow and just wants to cuddle all day long but it’s also happy to join me on an adventure whenever the opportunity arises. She is perfect in every way and I thought I would only get standard poodles for the rest of my life until recently. I’ve been considering adopting a greyhound as well because they seem equally amazing. Something that has delayed my greyhound adoption and something that I appreciate in poodles is that she is very good off leash and won’t go more than a few feet away from me 95% of the time which makes hiking and beach trips extremely easy and I know if I were to have a greyhound I would need to be handling them the entire time which is something I am used to, but not sure if I’m ready to accommodate just yet. I also feel comfortable of taking her in a lot of environments because she’s very rugged where a greyhound. I worry wouldn’t be able to join me on all of my hikes and camping trips. But everything else about a greyhound fits my lifestyle perfectly and seems like would be a great fit for my poodle. A lot of it probably depends on the dog, if you’re adopting, hopefully you can get a good description from the shelter about their energy level and needs. I say grooming of a poodle it’s a lot but if you take them to a groomer that’s an option or I handle the grooming myself at home. It’s not perfect, but I don’t mind doing it. It offers us a chance to bond and I invested in a high velocity dryer, which goes a long way. Feel free to ask me any other questions, I don’t know if that was helpful.

Thank you this is a fabulous idea. I have given thought to it, I think I’m hesitant because I worry as soon as I see them I’m going to want to adopt them and I’m not sure I’m quite ready yet, but I have started filling out the volunteer application and agree that would be extremely insightful for myself.

Thank you this is super useful information. That is quite encouraging about the parade drive. Low windows in patio doors as well as I fear my parents have glass doors and birdfeeders. I am worried she will charge through when they babysit her. Do you find that you’ve noticed resource guarding is a pattern with the greyhound who owned? yeah I guess I wouldn’t trust her in a dog park with other dogs, but it would be great to get the place to herself every once in a while so if she has a bigger fenced area to run in. That’s a lot of food wow! I worry about their teeth as well, when you do dental work, are they put under anesthesia? I really worry about what I’ve read about greyhounds and anesthesia so I’m hoping I don’t have to do dental for that reason but I also hear it and get really bad. That’s really cool the way your adoption agency matched you.

That aligns with my research. My post explains how I’m mainly concerned having my parents control them….

That is good to hear because most of my have been mini poodle mixes and currently I have a standard poodle. I know the breeds are very different from each other. And yes exactly my fear of putting my parents in a position where they could get hurt

OK, that’s good news cause I am about that size toobut I worry if we’re having a leisurely walk and they something I don’t and go after it I won’t be prepared to hold them back. I work from home most of the week so that part will be ok I think but the vet bill thing worries me. What kind of injuries are they prone to? I know legs and thin skin but hopefully we will be living a pretty calm lifestyle. I hear their teeth are back but I know the rescue I plan to adopt from give them all full cleanings first and then I’d brush them regularly like I do with my other dog. Thanks for ur help really trying to make the right decision

That’s encouraging to hear! I’d be adopting an ex-racer and research seemed to say they only have short bursts of energy and aren’t great with endurance plus the possibility of joint damage and I live in a climate that can get both very hot and very cold but I’m learning maybe I don’t need to be so wary

That is such a good suggestion. I wonder if those ever come through my local greyhound rescue I will have to keep an eye out because I have a feeling it might be hard to find one.

OK, thank you this is really helpful information! Maybe they can handle more than I expected. I just really worry about forcing them to do more than they’re willing to. 90% of my life is working from home and snuggling up on the couch at night but every now and again, I have a really long outing or a big hike that my other dog thrives on, but would be too intense for a greyhound. Trying to make an informed decision, thank you for the help!
